OT - Couple of racing game demo\'s i made.

different concept than most racing games, though. the faster you go, the more score you get. there are no other cars or jets.

so, what's the problem? hazard's! have fun. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

remember, there only demo's. if you have comments, feel free to. if your a shrapnel employee and want to publish the games, PM me. if your a shrapnel employee and want me to remove this, PM me.

i don't think they'll complain. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif other people have posted threads like this.

there on my webpage, which i just set up today. which is kinda obvious. http://www3.telus.net/funnybnz/test.html

Re: OT - Couple of racing game demo\'s i made.

few questions, if you want to answer: what did you think of the hazard's/bonus/instant lose? to many? to few? is the time limit to short? what cars did you try?

ok, fix is uploaded. ah, the perils of using a fixed path or two if your going to distribute. it now has a config file. replace the first line with the path of the directory it's in, the second with the path of the music directory. and, because my 10MB maximum can handle it, you get one music track. add in more, and it should randomly choose tracks.

oh, and dodge left or right if you hear a weird noise. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Re: OT - Couple of racing game demo\'s i made.

Hi Narf,

Was this game compiled with the full Version of DarkBasic? I tried the demo awhile back and it was fun, but I hated the fact that even the simplest program (ie 10-15 lines of code to display text) compiled into a 5 meg executable. Not very efficient.

I wrote an e-mail to them asking if the 'full Version' was capable to compile smaller executables and never got a reply. This was the only thing that prevented me from making the purchase. If your program is an example, then I guess it stuffs everything and the kitchen sink into the executable regardless. (I was kind of hoping that they only did that 'overstuffed exe' thing for the demo.)

Oh well, to bad, so sad.

Cheers. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

P.S. not a bad demo, but has quite a ways to go before it is of commercial value. (just my opinion.) The concept does have potential though. Keep up the fun work.

Re: OT - Couple of racing game demo\'s i made.

there up to 'darkbasicpro'. as far as i know, it only compiles your program into the .exe.

try the demo. the program does have some limitations, which i won't get into here, except to say that the rotate command is messed up.

i know it's not saleable, what i'm wondering is if it could be saleable with an interface and pretty backgrounds and stuff.

doesn't sound like to many people are interested, though.

Uploading.

ok, uploaded a fix. Collision should now work right in Jet Racer, hills are now textured according to size and you get a score and distance report when the game is over and the option to retry.

and i made a short readme for JR and Speed Racer.

Ok, you need to not have the game screen blank when you die. As it is most of the time I have no idea what happened.

The viewpoint for jet racer is pretty bad, too.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">ok, get rid of the screen blank. maybe have the view rotate?

i've tried different camera positions and the best thing i can think of is make the viewpoint changeable. maybe a right-click action?

anyway, my brother wants the comp and i've had it for a while, so...

Re: OT - Couple of racing game demo\'s i made.

the screen only blanks for a quarter second now, for dramatic effect. after that, the screen rotates around where the game ended so you get a 360 view of whatever went wrong. there's also a cockpit view(F1), and the chase view, which now goes much closer(F2). you can also use the wasd keys as well as the arrow keys and right-clicking, holding and moving the mouse rotates the view in chase camera mode. and an updated readme.

on the downside, i stuck a time limit in there.

6 Posts from me, 3 Posts from other people...i know it's just a tech demo, but should i be concluding 1) that they suck, 2) very few people here play racing games or 3) everybody goes mute when they see my amazing tech demo's? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

neither works for me
if you want a better development platform, try out C#, you can get a free command line compiler with the .NET platform I believe
WinForms are really neato

Re: OT - Couple of racing game demo\'s i made.

no error message?

the important C question...how are the help files for C#? the ones i got with C++ VS are useless.

oh, and did you redo the config.txt to point at where you installed it?

i will have it auto-detect it's location, but at the moment, it's not the only urgent thing on my list of things to do. and i have to do the other thing before lack of sleep fries my brain.

new update. will now auto-generate a config.txt file. if you tried it before and it didn't work, please try it again.

i'm learning something new with every update.

Maybe you should just have some patience and wait at least a few days before complaining? Not everyone has the time to just drop whatever they are doing and play the game demo right away. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

new upload uploading now, new hazard. not actually inspired by indiana jones, despite the obvious simalarity's.

i know there's at least one graphical glitch with it, it will be dealt with tommorrow.

well, if anyone was annoyed by the terrain not always being pounded flat in a small strip, that's been fixed.

and just in case anyone missed it, Jet Racer now detects it's folder.

and here's the link, just to keep it at the top. http://www3.telus.net/funnybnz/test.html

Not a bad start, Narf.

The collision detection needs to be improved for the 'Jet Racer' game. I'm able to skim through the tops of the stalagties/stalagmites (whichever refers to the one jutting from the ground).

Re: OT - Couple of racing game demo\'s i made.

yeah, i'm using about six contact points to see if any of them are below ground. i think about 5 more should do it.

of course, if anyone knows a more efficient method, there welcome to point it out. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Hmmm, I downloaded your demo, and when I tried to run it I got a message that I was missing some D3D9.DLL file. Ummm, where can I find such a file? (Damn MS system just says to try reinstalling... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon8.gif )

Re: OT - Couple of racing game demo\'s i made.

i strongly suspect that i have created tech demo's which require directx 9 to run. i'll run them and the compiler down to the other computer and see if i can compile them there. or something.

i hope that's not why i'm not getting much response.

or, on the other hand, maybe i don't.

check your dx Version for me, ok? and for a corrosponding .dll?

if it's just an ordinary dll, i could include it on my site.

Narf, I have directx 8 installed. D3D8.dll is in that package! So it looks like you required DirectX 9... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

well, only my dad can get our lan connection to work, so i guess i'll post a message when or if i get it downstairs and compiled. for some reason the two computers don't like talking to each other.

is it modable?

can we race EEE battlecruisers against the Xaiti?

Re: OT - Couple of racing game demo\'s i made.

woah, it's really been that long?

Well, anyway, I finally got around to making a lower directx Version of Jet Racer. If no problems are reported, I'll make a lower dx Version of racing and import bombdrop.wav as it sounds a lot better than what I'm using.
http://www3.telus.net/funnybnz/test.html

P, you can't race them against, these games are 'dodge the obstacles' racing games. However, any .x file you use to replace another will be used in the game. Large objects are not recomended. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif
Unfortunatly, ground collision is hard coded. Will fix that if I make a full Version.

Please note that if some people do want to buy the game, it won't languish on my harddrive for another two months. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
