out of memory?

Hi

when I first played the game I got this out of memory error on aprox turn 145-185 saying in a simple alert box out of memory, I updated ti the latest patch and then it was fine. I know have updated to the latest Version and it now occurs again. I was wondering if anyone knows what is causing it?

Thanks

intel d865gbf mainboard
56x cd rom drive
10/100 nic (pc is a domain member)

win xp pro
1gb dual channel ram (2x512mb)
nvidia geforce4 128mb mx440

Re: out of memory?

It's not a integer overflow error by chance is it? It doesn't sound like it, but those are the most common errors.

I can't recall anyone previously posting an "out of memory" error and your system obviously has lots of memory so that shouldn't be an issue anyways. Were you running any other programs at the time? Odd CDs in the cd drive when playing the game?

Maybe you should start a new game?
Sometimes old saved games behave oddly with new patches.

Re: out of memory?

no mods or anything, i am simply playing a brand new game after installing the patch.

I will try and get it to occur again and il post a screen shot of what happened

Re: out of memory?

Also, is there any particular event happening on that turn like the massive launching of units or things of that sort?

Re: out of memory?

Hi

sorry the old error was out of range before the first patch, then this error definatly is out of memory, and I do not think anything spectacular happened, I was wainting for a new ship to build so I simply was skipping turns, hitting end turn immediatly for about .8years, and on one of them it just said out of memory.

Thanks

Try turning off your virus software and see if that helps.

Also how much RAM do you have. One of your DIMMs could be bad. (?)

Re: out of memory?

it is 1gb of dual channel ram, 2x 512mb sticks

all ram is fine, i do weekly checks

and I do not run direct anti virus software, I just have a automated daily scan by the server (it is complicated! i wont explain!)

Re: out of memory?

That amount of memory should be fine; way more than fine to be honest. When I first got SE4, I was running it on a 256K machine and I don't remember getting any out of memory errors. Based on what you have said, I can't see why you are getting the errors.

If it isn't an excessively high numbers of units or ships, I don't know what would cause it. I think that would cause a range check error instead of an out of memory error, though.

256K? se4 must use very little memory. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

I'm sure that Windohs was using the swap file a lot on my old machine.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Ouch. Yes, I was serious - and seriously wrong on my units http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/blush.gif . Should have been 256M instead of 256K. However that is 1/4 of the memory he's using so I really don't think it is a computer memory problem.

*trots off to learn his units*

Off topic blurb...

The funny thing is that I actually have had and worked on machines at or lower than 256K RAM. There were some pretty good games with pretty good graphics in the 1980's on my old Commodore 64 (64K ram). I'm not even going to mention a 20K computer I used to have. I'm sure showing my age. If there is one thing I have noticed with computers is that software is now bloatware. The size of software grows with the size of storage, but the software does not get proportionally that much better. There is no regard for software size and consumers don't make it an issue either; they just buy bigger and faster harddrives. I can remember using word processing software that was literally MILLIONS of times smaller in file size (KB vs GB; after adding up all those dll's and such, it's easy to be over a GB of execuatables) than current software and I somehow managed to pump out paper with it; but it was not MILLIONS of times less capable. I remember optimizing programs to save BYTES here and there in order to squeeze more lines of program into the machine. We'll save the punch-card stories for another time. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

=======================

So as to not hijack this thread, is there anyone else who is experiencing out of memory errors? And what was the cause/fix? I sure don't know what is causing this problem.

Yeah, I remember when I was working on the old Macintosh 512E, there was no hard drive, and we had low-density floppy disks (800K) which contained the operating system, and Microsoft Works, and had space left over for documents.

Re: out of memory?

I get this error regularly also. Have gotten it on all three of my systems (laptop, two workstations). Seems to be no ryhme or reason either. Only thing I noticed is it seems to always happen after 50+ turns or after I have left the game open for 3 or 4 days (even if not playing it). Have emailed Malfador a couple times about it but nothing. Sadly its not reproducible either. You can reload from a previous save and works just fine. Only suggestion I have for people getting this error is set your game to auto-save EVERY TURN!! This way you can always reload to your current turn after getting the error.

Question for Wilhil, do you manage your own swap file (e.g. hard set the swap or disable it) or let windows do it for you?

wilhil March 3rd, 2004 08:56 PM

Re: out of memory?

Windows does it automatically, and you said it perfectly, It just happens whenever! no way to guess, it just happens!

I get it too. Can't figure it out, and its cost me two games already. Autosave is now on every turn http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Slick would have to mention age and punchcards.

half-hours waits for a kepunch machine...
overnight waits to see if there were any errors...
mumble, mumble...

Er...no out of memory errors here...mumble...

(punch cards) in the mil we had a computer that you programed with firing data off a paper tape. you could do the numbers faster by hand (one site at a time)
