I played 101st Airborne and was trying some other demos from the Shrapnel site. SEIV looked interesting and I was hooked when I couldn't play beyond 100 turns.

Since starting PBW, I have only played 2-3 single games and none to completion. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

I found SE 3 doing some random search--so i downloaded it and was hooked. When i saw that there were shipsets that could be added to it, I was so pleased that i looked for a battlestar galactica one--my search pointed me to Dracus colonial shipset and to this forum-- rest is history)) http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

I had been browsing the net for a space game like Empire Deluxe and came across the SE3 demo. I played that for a bit and then lost interest for a while. Afterwards, another internet search about a year later turned up SE4 and a few weeks later I had it and never looked back.

Found SE2 on a demo CD with 49 other games. Played SE2 first... and I don't even think I looked at the rest of the games. Ever since, I've been hardcore SE4.

I came across SE3 a few years ago when I was looking for space games at some game sites. I downloaded the demo and then I got addicted.

I have never played SE2, how was it?

Re: How did you hear about SE4 Gold?

Well, this isn't the first time I've told this. I was reading a PC Gamer magazine, and they had a review of SEIV Gold. I went down to my local Electronic Boutique, and they told me they had never heard of it. so I became intrigued. I d/l the demo, and due to my frustration of not understanding some of the aspects of the game (such as I didn't know at the time that you had to have people on the colony ships when you send them to another system), that I sent in a check to buy the game. The rest is history.

I was looking around in the SFB (Star Fleet Battles) web site and found a link to SE. Followed it and liked what I saw. I preordered Gold, and played the demo while I waited.

Re: How did you hear about SE4 Gold?

How did I learn about Space Empires? hmmm, some guy named Aaron Hall sent me an e-mail saying he liked my roguelike graphics and wanted to know if he could use them in a game he was developing (Called 'Venture Forth') a 2d overhead RPG in the style of Angband/Nethack/Rogue etc. I wanted to know more about this guy and he said he is the one who created Space Empires IV. He also mentionned his company was called Malfador Machinations. I couldn't exactly sell him the rights to a tileset that I had already made freely available in the roguelike community, so I worked out a deal where he could use them if he sent me a complimentry copy of SE4:Gold.

We know who got the better end of that bargain,.. ME! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Well, I also managed to convince him to upgrade the game to my isometric tiles and he liked that idea. I had fun making all kinds of new tiles and played with the UI and stuff. (Wanting to give the game a look that would match my retro tileset.) The end result you all know as Dungeon Odyssey.

Aaron seemed to value my working style and the experience I brought to the dev team, and invited me to beta StarFury. (It's always good to have an artist on any beta team, because you know we can't resist doing artwork at the drop of a hat. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif )

While working on the SF Beta, Aaron asked if I would be interested in doing some UI stuff for SE:V (Yes he can ask silly questions sometimes http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif )

Along this journey I met all you fine people and have had an absolute great time being an active member of this community.

So, what was the poll about? Oh yes, "How did you hear about SE4 Gold?"

I guess I can honestly say I heard about it directly from Aaron Hall himself, no second hand rumors, no hearsay, no advertisment, just a simple "Hi, I'm Aaron Hall, I created Space Empires and I really like your RPG tiles.." What a wonderful way to start a friendship.

Sorry for rambling, but this thread has sparked a nice walk down memory lane.

Thanks, and Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Re: How did you hear about SE4 Gold?

I first started with SE2 back about 3 or 4 years ago (when I was about 12 years old!) I knew I loved strategy games, and was obsessed with space, so I tried an internet search for space strategy games, and Voila! there it was. SE2, the beginning of many, MANY hours of gaming fun!

After I found SE2, i went to Malfador's website and found SE3. After I played the demo to death, I finally bought the full Version and loved it.

After I got a little tired of that, I went back to Malfador's website, and found SE4. Downloaded the demo, played it for a LONG time, then finally couldnt' resist buying SE4 Gold. Best money I've ever spent.

I still love that game. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif SE2 was on some demo disk we got in the mail from somewhere. I lost track of it for awhile and grew away from SE2. Then one day I felt like playing it a couple years ago and did a search, found malfadors website and found out they had SE4. At that time Gold was on pre-order. I downloaded the demo and haven't looked back. I never did play SE3.

While surfing for a new game I came over this rave review:

http://www.pcgameworld.com/review.php/id/164/

In fact it was so good you could almost suspect the reviewer, a mysterious Scott R Krol, was not totally unbiased http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Anyway, thank you Scott. It was all true.

Reading a game magazine while I was addicted to crack and alcohol. I needed a new vice that kept me at home w/o appearing to be addicted. Only problem is after 2 years I'm too addicted and have been seen taking turns at work when I don't have the time to snort a few turns at home. The good news is most of the addiction is transparent to others (my wife still thinks I'm crazy when I spend an hour on a turn that includes clicking the mouse a 1k+ times).

I was looking for a game to replace Stars! after I realised Stars! Supernova was not going to come out. I came across the game listed in a games catalogue. The sort that just has a single paragraph with the price listed. Decided to give it a go from the description. Glad I did.

Re: How did you hear about SE4 Gold?

I was once a civ addict since 1996 now recovering. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif I helped create a website geared around a Mod initially for civ3. I had tried Galciv and really found the 4x genre a ton of fun. The owner of Galciv & creator, posted a message saying how great a game SEIV Gold was.

I posted a message at my website in the OT asking about SEIV. One of our staff members told me it was one of the best games he has played in years.

I went out downloaded the demo, this was like 6-8 months ago. (I also BOUGHT Moo3 like an idiot thats another story. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon8.gif ) Once I finally got SEIV in the mail, I found it a bit tough too learn at first. After 2 days of playing I was totally hooked.

I started up the SEIV Website for love of the game & because I found out that 4 others at CDG also played the game. From there I wanted to make a Mod, the rest is history. I now realize that these forums are the place to go and get help. I do hope my website starts getting some members, but Intel forums are the best. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

My Mod tentative name is the Galactic Conflict Mod. The Basic premise of the Mod is how humans end up spreading out colonizing the galaxy, like humans always do, they ned up fighting for prime quadrant locations. Akula (female player http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif )is my partner creating most of the artwork we will use.
The game will feature MOSTLY human races, with about 8 Alien races, most of which are Mega Evil status. Plus a host of neutral races of course. Sorry just a plug there. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

Looking forward to SE V. Star Fury is a cool game also, but no where near as much fun as SEIV IMHO. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif
