OT: Stargate

How many of you have been watching Stargate SG1 over its seven year run?

Well if you have you know that this is the Last year that Stargate will be aired, and that a new Stargate Series is being developed.

SPOILER

Over the Last year they have been talking about the "Lost City," a city built by the ancients who originally constructed the Gate system. Who ever crontrols the Lost City will have unlimited power. At the moment only the SGC and the System Lord Anubus know of the City exsistance and are locked in a a deadly race to discover it.

Well I just discovered it.

SPOILER

The Sci Fi network ran an preview comerical for the new Stargate series, and in doing so inadvertantly revieled the location of the lost city.

Stargate Atlantis.

Man kinds great unknown treasure, is the lost city of Atlantis.

That's interesting. I think you are right. I've heard for months they were developing Stargate: Atlantis as the next series, and I've followed the story arc lately about the search for the lost city of the ancients, but I didn't make the connection. It makes sense though.

Re: OT: Stargate

I've been watching Stargate since it first began. However, I didn't know that they were ending this series, and beginning another. Does anyone know if the new series will have the same cast, or a different one?

Anyways, Stargate is definitely one of my favorite Sci-Fi shows, and I think it's only gotten better as time goes on.

Stargate is ok...fun, if a little far fetched at times...there are too few good 'ol (yeeha!), scripted adventure shows these days.

A few questions/comments tho:

1. Why doesn't this thing star Kurt Russell or Patrick Swayze? I mean...how can ANY show succeed without them?

2. The show needs more jokes at the expense of Richard Dean Anderson. MacGyver is too good to pass up.

3. Does anyone else think that "Daniel Jackson" character is an annoying hippie-dork and in desperate need of a messy demise?

It's a companion series not a replacement and SG-1 Cast will be making the occasional crossover into the show.

It says the adventures take place AFTER the SG-1 series and refers to jack O'niel as General O'niel so it sounds like this will take place a little into our future.
http://www.gateworld.net/atlantis/s1/101.shtml only one guy looks like he's in modern uniform two of them

"SPOILERS POSSIBLE!"

I KNOW are aliens so they are wearing their own uniforms probobly and the one guy is just wearing an odd uniform so I dunno.

"SPOILER POSSIBLY"

They have a new enemy called the Wraiths I WANNA KNOW WHAT UP with the Goua'Ould?! They better not just leave the Goua'ould as a cliffhanger ending or some such because that would just piss me off http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif .

It appears that Atlantis will take place in the not too distant future but in the future none the less because of the fact that some of the stuff I read that I wouldn't want to spoil for you guys.

I can deal with a story in the not too distant future as long as they keep the Goa'Ould in the story line since so far Anubis is far from falling and the System lords seem to be uniting http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif .

Two stories? Hrm... i've only read a preview for s8e1, along with part of a spoiler. I don't know how official the spoiler is, however. I do hope that the episodes continue being as much fun as they are right now.

And i really think that the VP is going to get an ulcer if he continues worrying about the stargate that much. He's annoying. Maybe they should trade him to Anubis in exchange for peace?

As for the Atlantis storyline... this oughtta be interesting. I don't see who else they could be fighting at the same time... they're spread sortta thin as it is right now. SG-1's tactics resemble guerrila warfare right now, mostly because of a lack of just about everything.

Well the new enemy are called Wraiths that's all I know and if it takes place AFTER SG-1 the big question is how can you be running 1 story in the present and 1 in the future because you'd know how the war against the Goa'Ould ended???

Either that or we are gonna see some SERIOUS changes occuring the SG-1 storyarc to include the Atlantis base.

BTW Atlantis it is confirmed is a military base NOT as I've heard suggested a new SG team.

The reason that they can have 2 story lines going at the same time is that the NEW baddies are in the Pegasus Galaxy, not ours.

I wouldn't be supprised if after season 8 there are movies to keep the Goa'Ould going.

Randallw--Yes your a season or 2 behind, but don't worry you will see why/how Jackson comes back, it makes sense (to me anyways).

Looks like this new President has a good head on his shoulders.

Ohh, I only follow Star Gate a *cough* little. One of my moments of epiphanies was a few years ago. I had always chuckled at people that watched soap operas, but when I realized that Babaylon 5 and SG-1 where my addiction, I eralized that they were just like soap operas *sobs*

Fyron March 7th, 2004 01:30 AM

Re: OT: Stargate

How do they qualify as soap operas?

Randallw March 7th, 2004 03:16 AM

Re: OT: Stargate

I would guess they can be called soap operas because they have multi story arcs and characters and events in one episode turn up again in another episode, and you watch to see what happens to someone from a previous episode. Unlike "non-soap operas" where each episode is unconnected to a previous one except they have the same cast. I like Star Trek, but I have to admit at least with the old series the crew goes from planet to planet and nothing they did before has any relevance to later episodes. With NG you at least had the occasional "Worf" episode developing his character.

edit: second thought. Also with a soap opera you might miss a few episodes and when you watch it again the characters keep referring to something that changed the show, and you might think to yourself "hang on, did i miss something important?". Whereas a non-soap opera you miss a few episodes and come back and its like you didn't miss a thing. By the way I don't watch "soap operas" so I'm just going on what I think the term means.

Re: OT: Stargate

this my opinion of course, but I consider them in the same league as Soap Operas because I HAVE to see the next episode, I am addicted to the show its-self.

I had thought that Soap Operas were lame, that people that got into "the story" were a bit shallow to get into them, BUT here I was HOOKED on Babalon 5 and SG-1, I had to see next weeks episode, I was connected to the characters in a way that I had to honestly say that there were no difference between me and the Soap Opera watchers.

Perhaps my definition is not perferct, Randallw's was better. Are the soap opera shows the same as the sci-fi shows I mentioned, no they are different, it was just how I had looked at the shows that changed.

In my mind a soap opera is defined by continuous, drastic and overcomplicated plot twists at the expense of the "good" literary devices your english teachers tried to get you to learn...

We had an episode of Futurama here a while ago. They were showing an ad for the Robot Soap opera "All my Circuits", out of about 5 plot twists 4 of them were. Amnesia, Amnesia, does anyone here not have Amnesia?, and "when i tell you this you may well have an attack of explosive amnesia". All I know about real soap operas is that if a season rates badly they just say someone was dreaming and they go back to the start. Also Last time I saw Days of our lives someone was possessed by the devil.

Maybe 'Soap-Opera' is the wrong term for comparison. Personally I think we just all got sucked into the 'Cliffhanger' effect. Where we just got to know what happens in the next episode. Even though each episode is not directly linked like a true cliffhanger, our love for the characters gives it the same feeling.

Here in Tasmania its not so bad with Stargate. The free to air channel showing it puts it on at a reasonable time like 7.30 or, it starts agin this week, 10.30. The other channel which shows Star Trek and showed Babylon 5 though doesn't appear to care much about sci fi. When a new program starts they usually have it in prime time, but by the second season its on at about 1 o'clock in the morning, and they aren't interested in keeping up to date. They still havn't shown the final season of Voyager and we have had Jeri Ryan on Boston public for 2 seasons.

In the US network television seems to delight in creating a sci-fi show and then placing it opposite another sci-fi show on the same night, so that an already limited audience is split on which to watch (and keep going for another season).

The great thing about stargate sg1 is that it is produced in Vancouver BC. That is only about an 8 hour drive from here.

It amazes me that they have come up with so many excellent stories over the years, and how each story often ties in with another one.

SPOILER

I am saddend at the death of Dr. Fraiser at the hands of the guled, but I guess that is to be expected at one point or another. The killing off of a popular character.

I would like to see more episodes with Jonus Quin (sp) in them even though he is back on his home world.

I recent bough season six on dvd and I have to say that there were many fine eposides in that season.

I do however feel the season finally should have been two hours long and had a lot more depth to it. Not really there fault as they thought the show was over.

I will enjoy the new stargate spin off and I hope that we get to see the Promethius again in both shows. For an ugly ship, it sure is beautifull.

Actually, all those ships, in the show, were built by the USAF. The X-302's were based of the death glider design - but are designed with thier own hyperspace drives, and the X-303 was an original build. There are several episodes covering the X-303's exploits.

Stargate Atlantis is based entirely off-world in another galaxy. There is a lot more information at http://www.gateworld.net/atlantis/index.shtml

Re: OT: Stargate

Well we have had the season 8 premier of SG 1 and the new seires preimer of SG Atlantis. Both were good, with the SGA being really good.

S P O I L E R

I have to say the writing for this new show was very good. I especially enjoyed the conversation between the Wraith women/thing and Patric. Very spine chilling to say the least.

"You can go to hell!"
"Earth First."

SGA I think has a great cast and a very interesting idea. Although they did use a couple of my old ideas, http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif great minds think alike, genetically coded controls, and mind activated equipment.

I wrote a story four or five years ago and posted it on the old TOP forum about a boy who finds a space ship that has been hidden on earth for sixty thousand years and despite all the humans that came near it, it only revieled itself to the boy because he had the "gene" that marked him as one of the decendants of the original crew. A concept that I was going to use in OUTS. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif The second was to think of doing something and the controls respond. Ohhhhh I often wonder why it is that my ideas are shared by so many. Over population I guess, with more people, fewer original ideas.

Needless to say, it was a good premier.

I really enjoyed SGA, I think it will be a promising series. The only problem I had with it is that they didn't bring a nuke. In the movie, when they were jumping into the far unkown, they brought the nuke. But if they brought the nuke and nuked the alien ship I guess there wouldn't be much of a series would there.
