That article had a lot of "bad stuff" but absent was any real facts, figures, or general proof.

I'd suspect it's just some person pushing their agenda.

However, anything in large amounts can be harmful. As usual, the good 'ol balanced diet works best.

Re: Soy Bad?

Well it was an interview more than a scientific article... there is a link to the web site for the book to be published...

Captain Kwok March 6th, 2004 09:30 PM

Re: Soy Bad?

The site was just a promotional vehicle for her book.

To be honest, you can come up with the same scary stuff about diary products or meat, or whatever.

The bigger problem is people wanting to get "healthy" and then overloading on some "healty" food/diet of their choice, i.e. low carbs (Atkins diet). Balance is the real key.

I do agree that they sure put a lot of soy into food stuffs these days. Especially the fast food industry. Most places will add soy protein into their burgers/nuggets/etc. to act as a filler for meat, since soy protein provides the same kind of texture and is much cheaper.

And it's the rice that stunts them. There is an enzyme in it that inhibits the absorption of iron and the lack of iron slows their growth down. When they come to the US and start eating like Americans they get taller (and unfortunately also get the same diet-related diseases as other Americans... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif )

Re: Soy Bad?

From a project page on genetic alteration of rice to improve third-world nutrition:

http://dragon.zoo.utoronto.ca/~J02T0101A/nutrition.htm

Iron rich rice could be on its way very shortly. Researchers are focusing on three different transgenes to solve the iron deficiency problem (11).

* Gene encoding the phytase enzyme that breaks down phytate; a molecule that prevents absorption of the ingested iron by binding to iron in the gut.
* Gene encoding for a cysteine rich protein which helps iron absorption in the gut.
* Gene encoding the protein ferritin that stores iron in the rice grains.

---

Apparently 'phytate' is present in most or all of the grains that people eat, but either the phytate content of rice is very high or it's harder to properly seperate the phytate from the rest of the grain (milling to remove the husk) because iron deficiency is a big problem in the regions of the world where rice is eaten as the bulk of the diet. Yet vegetarians elsewhere in the world who live only on grains & vegetables don't (necessarily) have iron deficiency problems. So it's not necessarily lack of meat that leads to iron deficiency.

Ah, there's the problem! Don't eat rice...eat good food, like beef! Ok ok, I'm biased (son of a cattle rancher!), but look at me, I'm tall and in good shape, and I credit all the meat in my diet. So come on all of you vegetarians out there, hop on the meat bandwagon! You know you want to.....

BAN DIHYDROGEN MONOXIDE!

Dihydrogen monoxide is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and kills uncounted thousands of people every year. Most of these deaths are caused by accidental inhalation of DHMO, but the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide do not end there. Prolonged exposure to its solid form causes severe tissue damage. Symptoms of DHMO ingestion can include excessive sweating and urination, and possibly a bloated feeling, nausea, vomiting and body electrolyte imbalance. For those who have become dependent, DHMO withdrawal means certain death.

Dihydrogen monoxide:
</font>
  • <font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">is also known as hydroxl acid, and is the major component of acid rain.</font>
  • <font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">contributes to the "greenhouse effect."</font>
  • <font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">may cause severe burns.</font>
  • <font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">contributes to the erosion of our natural landscape.</font>
  • <font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">accelerates corrosion and rusting of many metals.</font>
  • <font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">may cause electrical failures and decreased effectiveness of automobile brakes.</font>
  • <font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">has been found in excised tumors of terminal cancer patients.</font>
<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana"> Contamination is reaching epidemic proportions!

Quantities of dihydrogen monoxide have been found in almost every stream, lake, and reservoir in America today. But the pollution is global, and the contaminant has even been found in Antarctic ice. DHMO has caused millions of dollars of property damage in the midwest, and recently California.

Despite the danger, dihydrogen monoxide is often used:

</font>
  • <font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">as an industrial solvent and coolant.</font>
  • <font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">in nuclear power plants.</font>
  • <font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">in the production of styrofoam.</font>
  • <font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">as a fire retardant.</font>
  • <font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">in many forms of cruel animal research.</font>
  • <font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">in the distribution of pesticides. Even after washing, produce remains contaminated by this chemical.</font>
  • <font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">as an additive in certain "junk-foods" and other food products.</font>
<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Companies dump waste DHMO into rivers and the ocean, and nothing can be done to stop them because this practice is still legal. The impact on wildlife is extreme, and we cannot afford to ignore it any longer!

The American government has refused to ban the production, distribution, or use of this damaging chemical due to its "importance to the economic health of this nation." In fact, the navy and other military organizations are conducting experiments with DHMO, and designing multi-billion dollar devices to control and utilize it during warfare situations. Hundreds of military research facilities receive tons of it through a highly sophisticated underground distribution network. Many store large quantities for later use.
