Sound Pack
I think it would be cool to create a Sound Pack, similar in concept to the Image Mod. It would be a collection of sounds instead of images, designed to be installed in the default sounds folder so that mods can make use of custom sounds, just like the Image Mod, without every mod having to be huge.
Rules: 1) All submissions must be unique and original. 2) All submissions must include appropriate credits information. No submission will be accepted without it. 3) All sounds must be prefixed with a group identifier, such as "Fyron_Laser.wav". This is because sounds can have arbitrary names, so it is entirely possible that someone else wants to add a Laser.wav sound. 4) To make a submission, you can send it via email to admin spaceempires net (insert @ and .). If you are unable to email large files, send an email to that same address and an alternative method can be worked out to send the sounds. |
Re: Sound Pack
I have suggested this many times and no one paid any attention http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif
"Unique and original"? So no MOO2 sounds? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif |
Re: Sound Pack
Well I meant as in, not stock sounds and not sounds that are already in the pack. The Image Mod says something very similar.

Re: Sound Pack
An excellent idea Fyron.
Hicksz idea on how to add tuants to the game would make a sound pack an excellent idea. I have many tuants. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif |
Re: Sound Pack
As in, the Pkunk taunts that replenish energy(Booby! Hick! Dimwad!), and the Vogon Poetry Projector? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Re: Sound Pack
What would be nice is the option in SE V to send tuant voice Messages like in many games. Each player would have to have the tuant file in order to hear it.
But would it not be nice to send a message that reads; "Your empire is beaten!" But sounds like this: "You could no more evade my wrath than you could your own shadow." You address each comment to a specific wav file. |
Re: Sound Pack
http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif Lets not go the petty, childish routes of FPS games. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

Re: Sound Pack
A TextToSpeech engine reading out loud the Messages from the ai speech file would be more logical for that kind of Messages.
|
Re: Sound Pack
If this go ahead, there should be a minimum quality setting as well of at least 16-bit stereo. Files below this level can be saved in higher quality using sound recorder that comes with windows.

Re: Sound Pack
It does take up a little bit more space, but it does make a noticeable difference. Just compare some of the original SE:IV sounds with the newer ones.
|
Re: Sound Pack
Yeah, but wasn't a bit more than just resaving them from a low quality format to a high quality format done?

Re: Sound Pack
You will only notice the difference if you have a good set of speakers and the volume relatively high.

Re: Sound Pack
Wow... I haven't seen TG post in years... I thought he was gone.
Was I just not visiting the right threads? [ March 12, 2004, 15:31: Message edited by: Baron Munchausen ] |
Re: Sound Pack
Baron - Oh he's been here he's not dead yet http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif - for the most part lurking, except on a few Messages on the beta forum. Just been too busy making little future SE4/5/6 gamers with my wife. Hearts of Iron also sucked a lot of my time for awhile (would have been great to do a sci-fi mod for that-but the map is not moddable to a great degree).

Re: Sound Pack
Your welcome to use any files from my sound mod. Not sure where exactly it is located now in the new organization of d/l files (a couple of searches turned up nil). But as soon as I find it, I will post a link here.
Found it, in a link provided by Tesco Samoa (thanks!). http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/newup...1015384650.zip I have made some changes to it since the Last update, and will re-post it sometime in the next couple of weeks. -TG [ March 12, 2004, 12:20: Message edited by: Tampa_Gamer ] |
Re: Sound Pack
This is all? Tampa Gamer and hicksz? Surely more people must want to make/find snazzy sounds to submit!
|
Re: Sound Pack
Once I release my mod you can salvage any sounds you want from it. A lot of them are from various star trek games. I have some from starcraft and freelancer, too.
|
Re: Sound Pack
It would be far easier if you were to rename the new ones to be compliant with the Sound Pack format now. Add some common prefix, such as "Eclipse_", to the front of the names of all of them. This will insure seemless integration with the Sound Pack. You could then avoid including them in your mod download file, and point people to the Sound Pack, just like the Image Mod. Assuming this ever gets off the ground, of course... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Re: Sound Pack
Should have my revised Sound Pack ready in a couple of days (along with my revised TDM races). I have no problem renaming all of the files with some "[prefix]_" format but I have a ton of sounds that I already use the "notused_" prefix on and renaming 100+ files is going to take awhile. Does anyone know of a batch program or easy way to do that?
Thanks -TG |
Re: Sound Pack
Irfan View does batch renaming rather well. It is an image program, but it should be able to rename any files. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif It can even just add a nice prefix to the beginning of the names of each file.

Re: Sound Pack
Fyron, I believe I emailed you a collection of sounds extracted from MOO2 a while back, so if you still have those, go ahead and put them in http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
|
Re: Sound Pack
I don't think I have them at this point in time...

Re: Sound Pack
Want me to send 'em again?

Re: Sound Pack
Sure, and stick a credits.txt and such in there. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Re: Sound Pack
Tampa_Gamer, check out CKRename:
-------------- CKRename is a handy utility you can use to perform batch file renaming operations. It provides a three-pane interface: One to select a path, one to display the contents of the current path, and the Last to show the effects of the renaming options you've chosen. You can eliminate file names, insert strings before or after file names, or replace file names completely. You can also choose to sequentially rename your files, change file extensions, change case, and perform string substitutions. CKRename is very easy to use and, better yet, it's free. -------------- Tested and used quite frequently. I use it for example for renaming the pictures from my digital camera http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif Edit: spelling [ March 22, 2004, 05:43: Message edited by: Pablo ] |
Re: Sound Pack
IrfanView does most, if not all, of those things, except the string substitution IIRC. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif It is also free. Whatever suits your needs is what you should use. Try both.

Re: Sound Pack
Thanks for the software leads guys. I will try and post the update tomorrow night.

Re: Sound Pack
OH MY GOD! Tampa Gamer posted !
This is indeed a glorious day to behold. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif It is extremely a great day indeed. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Tampa what have you been up to? |
Re: Sound Pack
Email it to admin spaceempires net (insert @ and .) and I will add it when I can.

Re: Sound Pack
Atrocities - been busy man http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif (see below).
Well, I got ready to upload my revised sound mod (roughly 50% new sounds) and lo and behold - the Shrapnel site no longer accepts uploads http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif Can anyone recommend another SE4 site where I can upload to and then provide a link for everyone? Thanks -TG |
Re: Sound Pack
Fyron's Spaceempires.net is probably the best option.

Re: Sound Pack
I've got 38 great sounds now for you Fyron.
A good rule for this should be no sounds over 5 seconds in length. |
Re: Sound Pack
A taunt pack would be nice...... But impracticle.
|
Re: Sound Pack
Ugh... why did I have to delete a bunch of old emails? No longer have the submissions that had been emailed to me Last year... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif I have CW's submission and the old Version of TampaSoundMod that was linked to, but the others are gone.

Re: Sound Pack
If you package the unique sounds in appropriate format as per the original post of this thread, they can be added to the pack.

Re: Sound Pack
I have a sound pack I made for the next Eclispe Mod patch I'm working on. I have them set up with the "Eclipse_" prefix so they should be easy to add to the soundpack. It is comprised of an assortment of sounds from Bridge Commander, Armada 1&2, Starfleet Command 2&3, Freelancer, Rise of Nations, Starcraft, and several other miscellanious sources. They are formatted 44.000 - 48.000 kHz, 16bit Stereo. None should be above 3 seconds in length if even that. If you want them just let me know.

Certainly. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
