Problem solved (was Everyone who can HELP please read!)
My system has been invaded by something called “CoolWWWSearch” and no matter what I do every time I restart the computer it comes right back. I have tried “Spybot – Search and Destroy” and even gone into the registry to try and find the entries. Nothing seems to be working, I have emailed the support link on the page that keeps popping up (it seems to be some kind of web search software) but I doubt they will respond. Every time I start my system up it overwrites its own home page as my default homepage.
Any suggestions? I am so pissed off right now I can hardly think straight! [ March 13, 2004, 01:35: Message edited by: President Elect Shang ] |

I use a pretty good search and destroy program (out of Germany) but I'm at work now and don't remember the name of it. I'll get it later when I get home if you are interested.

Re: Problem solved (was Everyone who can HELP please read!)
My mom just had this on her PC at home, or at least something similar.
All I had to do was run ad-aware, remove all of that junk (she had 316 items http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif ) and then in the start menu/programs there was an item there called search something and I just ran the uninstaller for that, then went to my computer/c:/program files and deleted the rest of the files related to that. It is now gone. Hope that helps. |
Re: Problem solved (was Everyone who can HELP please read!)
If you can find files from which this evil is spawned...shudders...and wish to avoid another infection...you could always try overwriting them with empty/rubbish files to...hopefully...confuse any future reinstall attempts.
Hope you kill it good... |

Also if your running XP be sure to turn off the auto back up function. Viruses love to hid there. Run your anti virus, and or buy pest patrol and run that as well.
Then reboot and see if it is gone. |

First Tesco's suggestion as his page talked about the very same thing that I am trying to shake. If you are not sure what I am trying to kill click on Tesco's link in his first post on this thread. There you will see CoolWWWSearch and it is far worse than anything I have fought so far.

Re: Problem solved (was Everyone who can HELP please read!)
Latest update: So Spybot Search and Destroy says that I have the CoolWWWSearch on my computer, but when I run the miniremoval that is on a link below it says that I do not. Ideas?

Re: Problem solved (was Everyone who can HELP please read!)
Ok, I had this EXACT thing happen to me. Got rid of it too.
Do a websearch for "CWShredder", it is a program that removes the problem completely. Havn't had a problem since (wellll...until I got hit by the NetskyB virus....but thats another story.)..... |
Re: Problem solved (was Everyone who can HELP please read!)
The cheering of the crowd rises to a defining level as PE Shang steps up to the podium.
“My fellow Talerains, as no doubt you all have heard the rumor I will cut straight to the point. We have defeated this insidious pox upon our society.” The cheering grows in volume and tempo. “Now all members of the Tal-Re Republic are safe to enjoy their internet again.” I thank all of you who took the time to help me out, this is the worst that I have ever been struck. I just wish I could figure out how it got on my system. |
Re: Problem solved (was Everyone who can HELP please read!)
I had this exact problem too, something kept on rewriting my startup files and even added stuff to my favourites list.
I got rid of it very simply: went into safemode and did system recovery to a few days earlier, it never bugged me again up till now. (and I got this problem a month ago) |
