OT: Sky Captain and the World of Tommorow...

Saw a trailer for this movie coming soon. Looks slightly interesting. Allthough at this point it's hard to say it won't simply be two hours of eye-candy with no discernable plot. On the plus side it's steampunk, so it's got that going for it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

But one major early gripe, why rip-off the theme song from Stargate? There aren't enough out of work composers that they couldn't get an original orchestral work? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon8.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

From what I've seen from half the Posts at Slashdot, producers tend to "borrow" themes from other movies for trailers, because often the real scores aren't recorded yet.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">From what I know of movie soundtracks, this is true. Some composers, like my favorite, John Williams, will wait until the movie is complete and edited, then sit through a viewing and compose the movie afterwards. Other composers do it different ways. So there may be a soundtrack yet to go with the trailer.

Saw trailer for that sky thing, and I have to agree: Looks like a standard spesheffex fest with a partially redeeming steam-tech theme.

After the League of Exyawnary Gentlemen I guess Steam tech is in.

However I did see a ciple of trailers that look really good: One looked like a remake of Dawn of the Dead, and the other was some kind of genre-spoof named Shawn of the Dead which looked utterly hilarious...

Did you know the director of Sky captain is the same guy who wrote the software to do the background effects. It's supposed to be a new system where you just put together the movie and then stick the actors in where they are needed. I've seen a trailer for it, and personally I think it just looks like game cutscreens with known actors.

Re: OT: Sky Captain and the World of Tommorow...

I've seen the trailer twice in the theatres, and I still can't figure out WTH it's supposed to be about, or why I should spend $5-8 to go see it. The appeal of steampunk is lost on me. I'll just save the money for the extended edition of ROTK... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Just heard something on Glenn Beck this morning. Apparently, this guy was creating the movie one frame at a time at his own home in Michigan before some Hollywood producer saw it and bankrolled him. Apparently he had been working on this since the early 90's, and had only 6 minutes of movie done. But it was enough for this producer. He was moved to an off-Hollywood studio. The 6 minute film was shown to some actors, and Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow signed up. Sounds like another Hollywood success story, if only the movie lives up to the hype.

Gotta admit though, after seeing Angela Jole in that military outfit she'd make a great Honor Harrington if they ever did an Honor movie http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Re: OT: Sky Captain and the World of Tommorow...

I must say I hadn't heard anything about Sky Captain until I saw the trailer in the theater a few months ago (along with Pitch Black's sequel). I was waiting after the first thirty seconds for someone to "snap out" of a dream sequence.

In regards to the theme musics, there are about ten or so pieces which you'll hear over and over again for various trailers, depending on the company releasing the picture. Over the Last few years, I've noticed a few recurrent ones:
Stargate - main theme
"Bishop's Countdown" from Aliens
The Patriot - theme

I'm sure you all know more too. But for the most part, it is a.) cheaper and b.) often the composer isn't involved at the point the trailer is released or he/she is working on the film and can't be troubled with a trailer.

HH is tall, though, so they'd have to do some camera tricks because i'm pretty sure AJ is short.

well, they did a good job with that with lotr, but they only had a few really short characters played by short people. i think it might be impracticle to do the reverse.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Actually, John Rhys-Davies (aka Gimli the Dwarf) is over 6' tall. None of the actors who played hobbits are below "normal" size either.

in which case, you can go onto the next topic you have tabbed, read that one, check the previous one and if so, then qoute using cut and paste.

John Rhys-Davies would make a great Pultmier (sp) if any of the Clive Custler "Dirk Pitt" novels were made into movies.

(Raise the Titanic does not count, that was a horrible movie)

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">I don't think John Rhys-Davies would be considered short. IIRC, he was about the same height as Harrison Ford in the Indiana Jones movies. If you saw a short Gimli, it was usually from behind. They only used his face for close-ups.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">You may get your wish. I don't know about Rhys-Davies, but Clive Cussler has given permission for one of his novels to be made into a movie. I forgot which one it was, but I read this not too long ago.

(and I agree with you, Raise the Titanic stunk to high heaven. Although I wonder, if they ever do a remake, how would they raise the Titanic in it's current state?)

They made Raise the Titanic into a movie? I read that book. If it's the same one I'm thinking of. It was interesting. Read it years ago, back before Ballard found the actual Titanic. That was the first place I had heard about the Y2K bug. It was an interesting bit of background for one of the characters, that supposedly he made his fortune figuring out how to fix all those computers in time. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Edit: Ah, never mind. The book I read was not Cusslers novel, but was The Ghost From the Grand Banks by but Arthur C Clarke. Kind of the same idea I guess. But without the spy story underpinning.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">I liked Clarke's ideas on how to raise both sections of the Titanic. I wonder how feasible it would be in today's terms. It would be costly, though.
