Please recommend some mods :)

Hey guys, I'm getting the game in a few days, and while I haven't even played the normal Version yet, one of the main reasons I bought this game was because of its modability. Unfortunately, the amount of mods for this game leaves me at a loss at which ones to try and which combinations of mods lead to an enjoyable game. So, if you guys could post some of the mods you enjoy, I'd appreciate it. New game types, ship sets, races, anything. THe only ones I have downloaded right now are the star trek mod and the star wars mods. So any other must trys http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

THanks

Pirates & Nomads! (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/newup...1065972137.zip)

Play as a "normal" race at first, then try a Nomad or Pirate race for a real challenge.

Be sure to download the TDM AIs, too.
Its not a mod, per se, but better AIs can't be beat!

I like Devnull Mod and Deathstalkers Mount Mod.

Devnull Mod has the Infamous Space Monsters. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon6.gif

Deathstalkers Mount Mod, while not a full mod, GREATLY enhances the game. (Lots of new mounts to use!) http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

You can (and I have) even combine those two for even more fun... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

Some people enjoy Fyron's Quadrant Mod. You can even use the "Standard" Version to make maps that can be used in stock SE4 or other mods.

I would have to say that TDM Modpack should be among the first you try. You should learn the basic game at least a little before going off with an involved mod. TDM only enhances and adds new races so none of the other aspects of the game are changed under this mod. Basically it is like playing the unmodded game with more of a challenge against the AI.

Slick.

TDM to start for base games addes a lot of challenge

FQM and any mod that use it for expanded systems and maps.

Pirates & Nomads for a good romp
Proportions for a slower more indepth game
Adamant (Under Development) for a challenge
AST for joyous journey to the undiscovered country
Star Trek Mod to go Boldly Where No Gamer has gone before.

And many many more.

AIC (AI compain by JLS) is a great mod too. Toughest AI yet because of specialised AI tech.
Just remember to use latest Versions of all mods !

Re: Please recommend some mods :)

thanks for the replies guys. I have downloaded most of them.

One other question. If you have absolutely no programming or graphical experience whatsoever, how hard is it to mod the game. The reason I ask is because eventually, I want to put some wing commander ships and races into the game and I would like to know if it is hopeless for me to do so unless I'm a programming guru. Sorry for all the questions.

edit: I have seen the current mod, which is nicely done, but I wanted to expand on it more, if I can figure out how to do it. Thanks

Re: Please recommend some mods :)

There are already two superb wing commander sets available.

Adding them to the game, or a mod is as simple as downloading them and unzipping them into your space empires Iv / Pictures/ Race folder.

Taking the included Design Name file (Normally named after the race) and placing it into the Design Names Folder located in your Space Empires Base Directory.

Taking any included EMP files and placing them into the Empires Folder located in your Space Empires Base Directory.

Modding is easy. The data is stored in easy to edit text files. There is also the SE4 Modder by DavidG that gives a graphical interface to modding.

Modding is pretty easy once you understand the basics. I am very new at it myself yet I have authored two mods already. If I can figure it out, then I am certain you can as well.

Also there are many helpful people on this forum and excellent support material to help you through the process.

What would be nice is if we could have ALL IN ONE place for modding. Forums, tutorials, discussion, how to's, known issues, and known work arounds.

My mod Invasion! is a good way to go if you don't want to drift to far away from normal SE4 gameplay. You can find the D/L link in my siggy.
