Geo: You're too kind. We'd have to see our work in print first though, maybe one day...
ANd did anyone notice my deliberate mistake in that previous post? Yes, I said "William M Banks" not "Iain M banks". Sorry Mr Banks. The scary thing is I was sober when I posted that, and pissed now http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif |
Re: OT: Your Favorite Book Series
My favorite series? Not in any order, either, but here they are:
Clive Cussler's Dirk Pitt books the Star Wars books (because 99% of them are in continuity, not only with the books, but the comics) The Lost Regiment series (aargh!! keep forgetting the author's name) the William Shatner (ghost)written Star Trek books the Dark Tower books by Stephen King (hell, any book written by Stephen King, except for Cujo) the first 2 Dragonlance trilogies by Weiss & Hickman I'm sure there are more trilogies and series I've read over the years, but that's all I can recall right now. |

Re: OT: Your Favorite Book Series
It took me 3 months or so, but I finally finished S.M. Stirling's Island In the Stream of Time trilogy. A good read, if you're into time lost people and alternate history. Also, if you get a chance, read his T2 trilogy. And the only other book I've read of his was Conquistador. He's becoming one of my favorite authors.

I'm currently reading the book Armeggedon from the Left Behind series. Haven't picked up the Last book, Glorious Appearance, yet. Probably will sometime this summer. Then the latest SW book in hardcover (can't remember the name right now). Then I'll read the two Dan Brown books, Demons & Angels and The DaVinci Code. After that, I'll just wing it. Got more books to read than time right now. [ May 04, 2004, 19:07: Message edited by: gregebowman ] |
Re: OT: Your Favorite Book Series
I suggest starting with 'Oath of Swords'. You can find that and 'The War God's Own' on the baen free library.
|
Re: OT: Your Favorite Book Series
I like the 'Myth Adventures' series by Robert Asprin, as well as his Phule's series. I have a ton of Forgotten Realms and DragonLance novels. I also like the 'Star of the Guardian' series by Margaret Weis. An one other series that I have read several times, the 'Guardians of the flame' series by Joel Rosenberg.
I haven't bought any books recently, reading has become too expensive a hobby for me nowadays. ($12 for pocketbooks is outragoius) So, I read the Posts here in the forums for my literary needs. And it's interactive to boot. nuf said, Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif |

Re: OT: Your Favorite Book Series
I've really really enjoyed the "StarFire" inspired series of books by Dave Weber and Steve White (Crusade, Insurrection, In Death Ground and The Shiva Option). They're probably the best stories I've ever read of epic space combat.
I've read those books so often they've gotten quite tattered and I'm due for a new good read. Can anyone suggest to me a book or series of books with similar epic space combat or with an "SE4-like galactic empires at war" kind of feel? |
Re: OT: Your Favorite Book Series
Try "The Fleet" series mostly by David Drake. Six books, then two "Battlestation" books. They have kind of a SEIV/Starfire feel. Some stories are about ground pounders, but some are of ship battles too.

Re: OT: Your Favorite Book Series
Try the Baen free library, http://www.baen.com/library/ under David Weber
And the Baen webscriptions, which you can get in downloadable text format, if you so wish: www.webscription.net Quote:

Re: OT: Your Favorite Book Series
Aubrey and Maturin series by Patrick O'Brian. The series that inspired the movie Master and Commander. Some of the best writing in the English language.
Love Asimov Foundation. Orson Scott Card Ender's Game and the new prequels. Stephanie Plum books by Janet Ivanovich. Hilarious. |
Re: OT: Your Favorite Book Series
I did an internet search. Are you sure that's not Janet Evanovich?
|
Re: OT: Your Favorite Book Series
Just finished reading Timothy Zahn's latest Star Wars book, Surviror's Quest. Pretty good, being from the man who almost single-handedly brought Star Wars back to life 15 years ago.

Re: OT: Your Favorite Book Series
Just re-read basilisk station yesterday, and will probably read the honour of the queen again somewhen soon.
I'm sure I've asked before, but what's in the series after that? |
Re: OT: Your Favorite Book Series
Well, traveler RPG, honerverse Version, has a list of all the books in order. http://www.travellerrpg.com/Honor/novels.html
What, you didn't know they are making a traveler hoververse RPG? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif Yet another reason to register for the baen forums. That, and the snippets. [ May 17, 2004, 19:20: Message edited by: narf poit chez BOOM ] |
