Woah, cool thing from NASA about that rover thing.

(Moderator Edit: The link that was posted here was deceptive in purpose and offensive in content. Lomax, don't do it again.

P.S. And yes, I understand it was supposed to be a joke, being April Fool's day and all. But it was over the line. )

Kim, I would caution you against posting comments like mailing someone an object such as you described. Even though it is obviously a joke, someone could take it wrong and cause you a whole lot of greif.

I followed the link, but when something I didn't know started to download I stopped it straight away.

THANKS, If this is a link to a download and the download is not described, then perhpas we should delete the thread.

Any one want to risk downloading it and tell us what it is?

Re: Woah, cool thing from NASA about that rover thing.

From what I can tell it is a joke file. I checked google for wohoo.swf and that was what came up. Still it is a REALLY BAD IDEA to download anything that you do not know, and from someone whom you've just met.

Re: Woah, cool thing from NASA about that rover thing.

.swf files are Flash animations. I don't think they can be malicious.

Fyron April 2nd, 2004 07:19 AM

Re: Woah, cool thing from NASA about that rover thing.

Certainly they can be malicious, depending on the content. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif Just not usually harmful, as in virus containing or other evil programming ploys. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Re: Woah, cool thing from NASA about that rover thing.

I have seen an increase in spaming and malicious links on many forums that I visit. In fact it has become rather sad.

One one forum we have had postings for things like ESCORTS, Viagra, Porn, etc.

On other forums we have had links to download viruses directly and people have downloaded them not realizing what they had done until it was too late.

Heck even posting direct links to download Mods, and Ship Sets here is a risky afair now. You never know if it is really a ship set or mod your getting or some virus until after you have had a chance to scan it.

What? That link has nothing to do with Mars or NASA or extraterrestrials. And no, it's not worth looking at.

Re: Woah, cool thing from NASA about that rover thing.

I have edited the post and removed the link. I understand it was intended to be a joke, April Fool's day and all, but it was in poor taste and over the line.

On the other hand, I think talk of possible punishment against Lomax is unwwarranted. Let's all just chalk it up to something that seemed like a good idea at the time, but in retrospect shouldn't have been done. I think we can all agree we've done Posts that we wish we hadn't.

We also don't as a policy delete threads. We edit out objectionable content when needed, but that's about it. It makes people suspicious when Posts or threads disapear with no explanation. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Re: Woah, cool thing from NASA about that rover thing.

Yea, well it was definatly NOT a virus or anything, in fact is it this funny thing that shows a fat woman dancing to funny music. And the stuff downloading was actually loading the web page. So it was not a virus and i dont even Know how to put viruses up or anything. So, if u took it the wrong way then fine.

Narrew April 3rd, 2004 08:16 PM

Re: Woah, cool thing from NASA about that rover thing.

If you (Lomax) spend any time in this forum you will figure out that your so called joke is not appreciated, hence the reason I said "lame". Everyone here jokes with each other, but we do try to do it in a mature manner. When I saw the amount of Posts you have made so far, I figured that you would get it over time...then I read your final thought **So, if u took it the wrong way then fine**...not very understanding on your part, so maybe you wont get it after all.

Yea well, it bombed.

I had watched it waiting for a punch line or funny ending... waiting... waiting... nothing.

The words were crass and offensive to some, then add in the insult to fat people.
It should not have been done, even with a warning.

April Fools day excuses the misdirection, not the content.

P.S. I am sure some of my jokes bombed or offended too.
Those who don't make mistakes, aren't doing anything.

Okay, well I already had gotten the message that people were mad because it had a person dancing with music playing. I am sorry for posting a link to a website that had a person dancing with music playing. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/confused.gif is it that bad?

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Very bad Netiquite indeed. The community on the Shrapnel forums has prided itself on the civility and respect that its members have for each other, and for those that are new to the community. We have all been very fortunate to have few run-ins with rude actions taken by new members.

The bad form in your post comes from the fact that you disguised what seems to have been a rather tastless attempt at a joke (I have not seen it, and don't plan on seeing it; the opinions of others here is quite enough for me) with a subject that most here are naturally attracted to. As has already been said by others, people read these Boards while taking a break from work, and offensive content like that is not looked upon favorably in an office environment.

What you have to ask yourself, is what everyone here will gain from your posting. The subject of this thread, "Woah, cool thing from NASA about that rover thing", suggests to most that they will get some information on a subject that interests them. What they get instead is a link to something that is no interest at all. Take a look at the other April Fool's Posts on the board. Several along the theme of 'X buys Y', a link to Gmail, narf's postings from Blarney News, etc. All either tell you that it was a joke, or make it plainly obvious from the absolute silliness of it. Now look at yours, no explanation, just linking to something not related in the least, no warnings, nothing.

That is bad form.

We all realize you're new here. I sincerely hope that you learn exactly why your posting of this got the response that it did, and know that in a less accepting board, you would most likely already have been Banned after a long flame war.

The one thing to remember is this: What does this post accomplish? How does it help someone else on the board? If you can't answer that question quickly and effectively, chances are you shouldn't post it at all.
