SEIV Gold on XP?

I'm not sure if anyone else gets this but since its Lasted through two different installations of XP pro and various hardware updates I'm sure its not my machine. Basically whenever I move my ships or they move after turn generation, the game slows down to a near crawl. Not even my old P100 was this slow with SEIV so I'm just owndering if its only me having this happen or others are too and I need to start playing on my 98SE boot instead.

See if you have any foreign (i.e. not SE:IV) CDs in your CD drive. That is usually the culprit!

Re: SEIV Gold on XP?

Turning off CD music or leaving the CD in doesn't seeem to help any. It only occurs when having the ship movement animations turned on. All my drivers are latest and my hardware is easily enough for SEIV. Though since at least one other person here hasn't had the problem on XP Pro, I'm kinda stumped as to what it could be. Might be a video card thing, I'm using a Nvidia GeForce 5900XT. Anyone with either Nvidia or ATI cards getting the same problem?

Re: SEIV Gold on XP?

This is a known issue with some installations of XP. There is not much you can do other than turning off the animations.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Oh well, I'll just have to scrape together enough parts to make a dedicated 98SE machine. Thanks anyway for the help everyone.

I have XP Pro and a Geforce FX 5200 and I have no problems, try running it in windows 98 compatibility mode.

Re: SEIV Gold on XP?

Do you really need the ship animations though? I find it far better to play without them... they do not really look very good anyways.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Yeah, I've tried that. Seems to make it slightly faster, but hardly enough to make a difference. Must just be the install of XP Pro I have.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">True, and it does cut down greatly on the time it takes to move a ship (having to wait for the animation to end) so I guess its a mixed blessing in a way.

Re: SEIV Gold on XP?

I've never had a problem like that with Xp Pro. Strange.
Have you updated your videodrivers, DirectX (not that SE IV uses it, I think...), SE IV Gold?
Hope you can get it right.

Re: SEIV Gold on XP?

The reason for the CD problem is that if you have game music on and the SE:IV or equivalent music CD is not in the drive, then the game is always checking the CD in the drive for what it wants causing this wierd slowdown.

Re: SEIV Gold on XP?

I had it installed on my work system (ssssshhhh) it too ran slow, no CD's in drive and on my home system win 98 runs fine. I just live with it http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

Anyone ever get distorted text from the computer player? I've been negotiating treaties with some neutrals (which uses the default speech.txt file) and their replies are distorted. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/confused.gif
