OT: Game You Have But Never Play

I am going through my games and noticed that I have a lot of them that I have never played, or only played once or twice. What to do with them now is the question on my mind. I would hate to give them up or away like I have in the past only to find out that they were worth a lot of money anc could not be easily replaced.

Freespace 2
Imperium Galactica 2
Civilization 3
Call to Power
Call to Power 2
Elite Force 2
Diablo 2
Space Empires (original disk)
Alien vs Preditor
Soldier of Fortune
Blade
Medal of Honor
Armada 2
Star Fleet Command
Bolders Gate
Dungeon Siege
Deus Ex Invisible War
Knights of the Old Republic
Jedi Knight 2
Rise of Nations
Hearts of Iron
Europe Universal (sp)
Risk
Unreal
Half Life
Masters of Orion 2
Masters of Orion 3*
Rebellion (loved this game)
many many more.

All semi good games that I paid top dollar for and only played once or twice. (Some more)

* Utter crap game

I guess I could just keep them and someday play them, but games like Imperium Galatica 2 are interesting, but very dated.

I could auction them, but I would loose money and there is no garrentee they would sell and then I would still have to pay the auction costs. (God Ebay has become expensive)

All of this leaves me with one question, why, why did I buy them in the first place if I wasn't going to play them that much?

Look around your home. I'm sure you will find loads of other junk that you never use. Video games are not the only type of consumer goods that we buy and then don't use. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif Unfortunately, advertising works. We see the RONCO infomercial and if it has any relation to our own life we buy the &$^&#@$^ pLastic do-hickey they are selling.

I have this problem in my both my computer game collection and my boardgame collection. I still have games that only run on Windows 3.1, and even some that only run in AmigaDOS 1.3!

I can't bring myself to get rid of any of them; I have trouble even throwing away broken hardware.

I know, I will launch gamerecycler.com and sell all my old crap for better than garage sale prices. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Any one interested in buying some old star wars crap? (Its either sell it or give it to my nephews who will promptly destroy it. You know when they say flaming tail, as in "Luke! Vader just flamed RED Ones tail!" my nephews take that literally and wo;; flame RED ONE's tail. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif )

I still have some of my old game cartridges for the Sega Genesis. The game console itself is broken. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif There's also several games I got for the Playstation 1. These work but some of them I have never played, or played only once or twice.

The reasons that I don't play these games is because of one or more of:
1. I started playing and quicky discovered that the game isn't very fun
2. The controls and features are complicated and difficult to use, and I didn't feel like spending a long time learning all the special button combinations, and practicing until I get used to it.
3. There's some other game that I like, that I would rather spend my time playing, so I always end up playing those instead. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
4. A friend gave me the game as a birthday present or Christmas present, but it's not the genre that I like.
5. I started playing and at some point I got stuck at a difficult place that I couldn't get past. I tried several times and gave up.

If it’s EU II you got, the new 1.08 patch kick ***. All the crash problems seems to be fixed and the AI’s have become much smarter. If you like big epic games and maybe try for a world conquest; Portugal, Ottoman and Muscowy are highly recommended. IMHO EU II is the greatest singleplayer game ever. Too bad multiplayer suck big time.

Re: OT: Game You Have But Never Play

One trouble with computer games is that you cannot rent them from the local video store. You have to rely on video clips, reviews, and if you are lucky you can get a demo to see what it is all about.

So far I have not regretted a single purchase. A lot of thought goes into selecting one since it is rare that I can afford a new game. My suggestion is to hold off buying a game unless you are certain that you "really" want it. Also keep an eye on modability. Some games are a total bore in stock form, but are a bLast to mod. Armada 2 for example. It is only a good game after you mod it IMO.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">There is a great community of Diplomacy players who play via e-mail. Just do a search on-line to find them. I followed a few games about 7 years ago, but never played. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif
Some of these games Lasted more than a year and the players became good friends. Even an observer(me)was accepted into the community. I still have three 2" binders full of information and strategy articles I copied from the web. Should really get them out and think about playing again...

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Talk about painful SW memories, I made a scale model of the Millenium Falcon. (from blueprints and made it out of Balsa wood) and gave it a very good paint job to closely match the movie look. It was a labour of love and it was to die for. My nephew was young (8 years old) and would always tell me how much he loved the model and used to sit and examine it to his hearts content. Being his godfather, I decided that he would be able to take good care of it and decided to give it to him for his 9th birthday. He was overjoyed and very grateful that I would give him my prized possesion.

Well, that model didn't Last more than two weeks before it was totally destroyed. I haven't made any models since, and still don't have the will to get back into modeling.

To make a long story short, sell the stuff, only give it away if the alternate choice is to place it in the trash. It will be less painfull that way.

nuf said, cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">I got another one to add to your list. Try having a kid. Spare time?? What spare time? If you're not running after him/her, you're trying to feed, bathe or trying to get the brat (oh, I mean that pure bundle of joy from heaven http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif ) to go to bed. Then, at least in my case, after about 2 hours, he'll go to sleep, then you can concentrate on playing games. But by then, it's late, and I don't feel like going on the internet or inserting a game disk into the computer, so I just double click on my SEIVG launcher and play a game until I almost bash my head into my monitor when I start getting sleepy.
That's the main reason I don't play too many games. I used to love playing RPG's, but most of them take 100+ hours to play, and I just don't have that kind of time to try that right now. Thank goodness I can least surf the net at work in my spare time.

A possible option is to donate them to the Library or some other place. Then you can get a tax deduction for them at least.

Yes that is the game. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif I have never taken the time to learn it. The learning curve seems to high and I lost interest in it. Thanks for the info. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

The patch for Hearts of Iron, by the same company, is 19 megs and that is simply to large to download on 14.4 dial up.

Really? You can get a tax deduction by donating old games to the library? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Does anybody know if this is possible in Canada?

SFC I and III were both good games, but they didn't have any staying power with me, and I lost interest after a month or so. Not sure why. It's funny, especially since I was a star fleet battles *fanatic*.

I'm more than happy to unload them to you or anyone else who might want them. I'd have to find them, they're deep in the closet IIRC...

'Kay, first of all, you're wasting some very good games by letting them rot. Who cares how dated they are? You are missing out on some games that I still play today (though you misspelled most of them.) I bet I buy more old games than new ones. With that being said...
