OT: Dusting Off Imperium Galactica II
I really never gave this game a chance and now that I have more free time than anything, I have become interested in playing IG2. Of course I hate the thought of a learning curve, but how hard could it be now that I have mastered SEIV?
I forget why I bought the game, but I do know that I really never did play it. Come to think of it I never really played Masters of Orion 2 either. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif Ok now I am getting depressed. I never really played Alpha Centuri or Stars either and I have both of those games as well. Any one here ever play IG2 for a long period of time? A short time? Hell any time? I would appreciate any thoughts, comments, suggestions. Thanks |
Re: OT: Dusting Off Imperium Galactica II
I played it, and thought it sucked... the AI seems rather content on cheating its way into amassing forces far larger than you can. It might have something to do with purchasing them on the open market or whatever it was, but the game was not interesting enough to continue playing to find out...

Re: OT: Dusting Off Imperium Galactica II
I bought the game a few years ago as well, but I didn't play for long either. (A couple of hours at most) Somehow the game didn't quite appeal to me, but I felt the same about MOO, so.
IG2 didn't seem to have a clear problem back then, but I will confess I don't like how battles are handled in this game, and above all, ground battles. (If you have a big advantage in range, you *will* win by a classic hit and run plan) I seem to recall there was something about ship design that tickled me off as well, but I should really give this game another try. |
Re: OT: Dusting Off Imperium Galactica II
I've played it many, many times. I really liked it. But when I got SE IV Gold, I abandoned the game.
It's quite cool to start as an alien race in the multiplayer mode (against the computer), but it becomes very boring very quicly. Once you've mastered the game at high level, it's not very attractive anymore. Conclusion: Boring when mastered and it's mastered very quick. |
Re: OT: Dusting Off Imperium Galactica II
What Timstone said.
Also, be sure to load the latest patch. It have some sort of skirmish mode in which you can play as one of the minor alien races, if they can be called that. The campaigns are fine for a while, but eventually you'll get bored. The game is too light compared to SE4. Plus: 1- Have a megaevil race from the very start. I don't remember their name, but you'll know because you can't used spies on them. When you find them, kill them, or else. 2- Spies were rather cool. 3- Tactical ground combat (though very limited) 4- Pirates! 5- Mercenaries! Minus: 1- Ship design. You are not free to design a ship as your wicked heart desires. Ships have slots in which you are force to place a single kind of weapon. I.e. Torpedos in the Torpedo slot and bLasters in the bLaster slot, and since your options are limited to torpedo level 1, 2 or 3, you will always chose 3, of course, which make ship design extremely boring. 2- Every system have....one single planet!? 3- No infantry or militias. 4- 5 classes of ships only, each rendering the previous class completely obsolete. 5- No carriers. Fighters just fly alongside the capital ships. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif ("Captain, I need to piss". "Piss on you pants, lieutenant. No more stops until next month". ) http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif 6- No design of fighters. And many more little details that I don't remember now. In general, the game sux after a couple weeks. [ April 29, 2004, 14:31: Message edited by: Yef ] |
Re: OT: Dusting Off Imperium Galactica II
I just dusted it off Last weekend.
Finding the patch was no fun. A good link to the patch is here: http://www.ina-community.com/forums/...hreadid=336641 |
Re: OT: Dusting Off Imperium Galactica II
Doesn't sound too fun. Heck, might as well "Reach For The Stars"

Re: OT: Dusting Off Imperium Galactica II
Can't say I've ever played it. maybe the next time I go to EB or someother place that sells used games, I'll see if they have and give it a go. I did buy MOO2, but I never did finish that game. Had some interesting features and technologies, but I'll stick to SEIVG.

Re: OT: Dusting Off Imperium Galactica II
Played it, never finished more than one campaign, still sits in my closet (for space strategy game research purposes) - but I completely agree with Yef on his +/- list. I too liked the implementation of "spy rings". I also liked the sensor/detection bubble concepts and the fact that you needed X population to run & factories/buildings. What turned me off in the end was the cheating AI and the lack of any real tactics other than having superior tech/numbers.

The catch is to make a race which is not all too powerful. Interesting is to use original races and play Impossible. Then it is really hard to win. Or to give your race all research penalties and spy everything http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif [ April 29, 2004, 17:34: Message edited by: Karibu ] |
Re: OT: Dusting Off Imperium Galactica II
what i liked to do in Moo2 is to create a game where i play against custum races that have the maximum research penality, so the game Lasted longer (yes, you can play against custom races, just create a lan game, save in the first turn, and load it as a single player game).
How you can't play Moo2 in WinXP? I have WINXP and MOO2 still works in it.... |
Re: OT: Dusting Off Imperium Galactica II
I have never tried it on XP. It was very unstable with W2k. That's a good trick to know, how to create custom races. I think I will use it.

Re: OT: Dusting Off Imperium Galactica II
Well I have been playing IG2 and I have some things to add.
1. I love the tutorial of the game. Very well done if not limited. It provides a very good working understanding of the game but lacks depth. Still very good though. 2. After about four hours of play I have to agree the game is very borning when compared to SEIV. It is simply to shallow in the game play department. 3. I like how some of the features of the game work, intel seems to work well, IE you hire, train, and deploy spies on missions. They can be turned and if you suspect such you can kill them. I like ease of use of the menu system of the game. Although compared to SEIV it is a simplistic. I hate to say it, IG2 even though it is over four years old, is still a better game than Masters of Orion 3. And we all know that SEIV is far better than that. IG2 had some nice Bink - avi graphics and such that I would hope Aaron can incorp into SEV. I like the idea of planets and stars rotating as they do in other 4 X games, and I like how IG2 used rotating facilities and ship components. Very slick. Combat was ok, a bit like rebellion, which took up a lot of processor time in the day. All in all IG2 is a nice beginner 4x game but is is far to limiting for hard core players. It is however a fun game. |
Re: OT: Dusting Off Imperium Galactica II
Sad, but I have to agree with Roanon. Before MOO3 was shipped to stores, I read in the forums when some people had memories of BattleCruiser 3000. I have never played it but when several players wrote that the most fun time with that game was when they broke the CD on the pieces, it told me something.
I had not such feelings with MOO3, but I was disappointed with it. However, it had potential which was never achieved. Too much ambition mixed with poor project management (right out from the horse's mouth, the game developers) and lack of resources --> half completed game with some great aspects in it but not fully shaped. Where is ELITE when I need it... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif |
Re: OT: Dusting Off Imperium Galactica II
Yes, I think "unfinished" is the best single word for MOO3. Even the patches are unfinished! There are just so many flaws and gotchas in the whole thing that you can't catalog all of them. I'm just about to give up on the game I am trying to finish. I had to try to complete a game, but it's become nothing but a chore to go back and play a few more turns. Guess I may as well recover the ~500 megabytes of disk space and accept that there isn't going to be any further patching.

Re: OT: Dusting Off Imperium Galactica II
Well, after they published those 2 patches, they directed their creative skills into another coding project with US military (this is true, you can read this form the MOO3 forums)... Seems that in couple of years the rest of the world don't have to worry about US generals either http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif (no offence to US military intented by this post).
