Star Trek or Star Wars?

I know how hard this decision is. But it has to be made! Please vote on which show has that little something you like a little bit more than the other. If you want to post your answer and reason why you picked your favorite please feel free!

Re: Star Trek or Star Wars?

As always, the question is, "Which Star Trek, and which Star Wars?"

The first three Star Wars movies are pretty good to excellent. Big part of my life as a kid. The latest two movies don't merit mentioning. I've never gotten into the comics or novels.

Star Trek - the original series, hokey as it is, is a classic. The Movies run from excellent (II - Wrath of Khan) to abysmal (V - the Curse of Shatner). STNG started OK, built up to pretty darn good (especially after Ensign Evil Incarnate left). DS9, same deal. With Voyager, the franchise "jumped the shark".

But, what series will I actually shell out money for to get it on DVD?

Babylon 5. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Oops! Triple post! Anyway, MOM and I would watch Bab5 together. The Sweet memories! Voyager jumped the shark!! GW I strongly disagree with you on that. The new show ENT has jumped the shark big time! But I do agree about the new SW movies. They suck a great many things!

Voyager jumped the shark. Enterprise set it on fire, put it through hoops, hog-tied it, twirled it over our heads, then jumped it.

How about star wars meets star trek - the deathstar up against the borg sphere ship ? Or the earth allaince on one point- up against the federation up against the dark side led by darth vader.

Re: Star Trek or Star Wars?

I would wager a million credits that the Enterprise E would waste the Avenger in a head to head battle.

Enterprise E has shields, torpedos, and phasers.

The Avenger has turbo lasers, and fighters.

As we all know a single federation phaser array can target and destroy multiple smaller objects.

Additionally, the Enterpise E has war drive which is mainy times faster than hyper space drive which the Avenger sports.

Manuaverability. Enterprise hands down.

This debate when on for years. First it was with the Enterprise A, then D, and now E. I recall a site where they programed the varables into a program and simulated what would happen. The Enterprise D obliterated the Star Destroyer.

And to boot, the people who set this up were star wars fans and they did not want to report what happened but eventually did.

Then someone took it a step further and made a 3d mock battle. (3d Artist forum and support site).

Again the Star Destroyer was beaten.

Come to think of it, they did it all, B5 vs SW vs ST vs BSG all in one huge mutli - scifi space battle. Very cool.

Re: Star Trek or Star Wars?

Yeah, some of the Star Wars technology isn't very advanced compared to the Star Trek technology. For example, the Star Wars holograms are all bluish and flickery. The Star Trek holograms are so realistic that they look just like the real thing. There's all sorts of technology in Star Trek like transporters, holodecks, replicators, tricorders and so on that are ahead of Star Wars...

Star Wars. No contest. Jedi, Lightsabers, Yoda and the number 1 ranking bad father 3 years running, Darth Vader.

Besides, I belive that Wesley is way more annoying than Jar Jar.

I prefer Star Wars (original triliogy especially) because its got a certain 'coolness' factor attached to it. Its a good v evil on a galatic scale.

This explains why I think that the Empire would have no trouble taking on any of the Star Trek non-godlike races.

Re: Star Trek or Star Wars?

I too voted for Trek. Why? Basically I've always felt Star Wars to be a bit.....lack lustre maybe? The ships just have a tin foil feeling to them. And they don't have a bunch of Macgyver-like engineers who, if given a phaser, tricorder or even a comm badge, can get out of the most sticky situations. Also I feel most of the stats on Star Wars ships weren't really researched too deeply, I could be wrong on that count. I've read the ST:TNG tech manual and it feels like they put ALOT of research into it and tried to make it as realistic as possible (if ST could be considered realistic).

I go for Star Wars, i just enjoy it more, well at least the original Trilogy.

I'm still convinced no matter what anyone says Anakin turns to the Dark Side by killing Jar Jar (who wouldn't http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif )

Although in my opinion both of them are below Babylon 5, Firefly and Stargate SG1 http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

I have to agree with ST being more real(in that sci-fi kinda way). The thecnical manual for the Enterprise-D is awesome! I will get the ST galaxy map some time soon. See where everyone lives.

I do enjoy SW very much(the original of cource!). In fact I prefer to read the SW novels than anyother sci-fi series. To top of the Last SW movie we need to see Jar-Jar die a graphic and nasty looking death. Don't you agree? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Babylon5. Well, its been a long time since I have seen an episode of Bab5. I don't know of any time it is on reruns where I live. I should get back into it with all of the votes that have been posted about it. I am glad that the Last Bab5 show, that one about Rangers, did not go on because it also suck a great many things.

After the poll closes I think the winner should face off with Bab5 and someothers. If you can think of some please let me know!

BTW ST bearly passed SW in my vote.

The TNG Enterprise was full of civilians and children engaging in soap opera Love Boat nonsense. They also like to slow to sub-light speeds to fight, so the audience can drool at close-ups of ships.

Now, Captain Kirk's Enterprise routinely fought at full warp speed, which is something neither Star Wars nor TNG is likely to be able to deal with. Star Wars turboLASERS implies lightspeed attacks, which wouldn't be very good at targeting ships able to maneuver, scan, and fight at many times the speed of light. Kirk's Enterprise was repeatedly described as being able to render planets uninhabitable without even breaking out the photon torpedoes.

Nonetheless, if we believe that the Galactic Empire has millions of planets and ships which can cross half a galaxy in a day's time, then even Kirk's Federation might be toast, due to sheer numbers and maneuverability. Their only hope might be technobabble, Vulcan logic, and Kirk's universe-class fistfighting skill (which often makes all the difference between success and failure in his encounters) and invulnerability beyond costume damage and small cuts and bruises. Of course, the Empire's lack of female personnel may be a problem for Kirk. Nah, he's got a whole ship full of miniskirt-clad subordinates. (Kind of like the Emperor keeping his chasms guard-rail free - to each their own.)

Re: Star Trek or Star Wars?

To be fair any starship can render a world uninhabitable. For referece the rock that took out the dinosaurs generated about 5 x 10^23 Joules (100 million megatons) of energy when it hit; detonating all the nuclear warheads on Earth would give you less than a million.

For example a ship just 300 feet long, moving at ten percent of the speed of light generates an order of magnitude more energy than that impact. If you get up to the speed of light and -then- hit you're talking about 450 million megatons of force.

Assuming your engines can't get you to speeds that high in normal space, things aren't much better. A Super Star Destroyer is quoted at having a length somewhere around 8000m. Ramming a planet at normal orbital speeds with something that big generates around a million megatons. Your only defense against a really desperate opponent is to have enough planetary defenses to totally destroy the ship before it hits.

Kamog May 4th, 2004 07:37 AM

Re: Star Trek or Star Wars?

Somehow the Star Trek ships look more 'high-tech', more sleek and elegant. The Star Wars ships are really powerful, but they have a heavier, bulky, conventional-technology look to them, as if they just took present-day rocket engines, armor and equipment and scaled them up thousands of times to make a star ship.

Re: Star Trek or Star Wars?

What I like about Star Wars is the universe itself. We know that the history of the galaxy that they live in is several thousands of years old. They have colonized the entire galaxy and have a huge society. Star Trek is not as indepth as Star Wars and Star Wars easily has the history over Star Trek.

To explore the history of the Star Wars universe would be a awsome journey compared to that of Star Trek or even Babylon 5.

Although I love the ships and characters of Star Wars, I love the look and design of Star Trek ships more. Never the less they are so close in score that if I had but a micro second to choose I might be sporting a lightsaber and rulling the Galaxy with an iron fist. (Literally)

Re: Star Trek or Star Wars?

What Atrocities said. I grew up as a Trekkie (yes, I use that phrase. I'm first generation, baby!), so I was a ST fan thru & thru. Then Star Wars came out, and changed that. Not overnight, of course, as I can watch hundreds of hours of ST, but only 10 (soon to be 12) hours of SW, not counting the various cartoons. But the scope of SW is so much more than ST, and the history is so much more than ST, which can only claim to be about 300 years, as compared to at least 4000 years during the Sith War period, and approximately 20,000 for when the Old Republic was conceived. As far as the ships, I loved the old Enterprise, but I'd kill for a ride on the Millenium Falcon. And another thing I love about the SW universe is that, with Lucas's approval, everything in print is included in the continuity of the SW universe, unless Lucas changes it in a movie. Paramount's position is that if you see it in a movie or series, it's canon; if you don't see it, it didn't happen. So give me Star Wars anytime.

Re: Star Trek or Star Wars?

I voted for Star Wars. You must understand, I was 17 when I saw the original and it absolutely blew me away. One thing that I really liked about SW was that the ships/weapons/planets etc all had that 'used/lived-in' feel. ST has always had pristeen ships and looked just a tad too squeeky clean to be believable. Oh, and the Falcon, it's still my favorite ship of all time. She is one of the strongest character's in the movies. Just as important as r2 and 3PO.

Also, ST was/is/and will always be primarily made for TV media. SW was/is in the realm of Motion Pictures. TV is nice, but a good movie beats TV hands down all the time.

But Thankfully this is real life, I don't really have to choose, I can have my cake and eat it too. Star Wars, Star Trek, Stargate, B5, Farscape, Andromeda, Earth: Final Conflict, etc.

Oh, and Books,.. there are hundreds if not thousands of great Science Fiction books that have not found their way to TV or Movies, but that does not make them in any way less deserving. All in all, I think we are very lucky to be living in these 'interesting' times. Yes indeed, this is a great time, Live long and prosper my friends.

Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Re: Star Trek or Star Wars?

I voted Star Wars, nothing can undo the damage that Voyager did to me, nothing... Well Jar Jar and the Chemistry between Padme and Anikin came close.

Both have their conns, both have their pros,

In the end the SW pro's outweigh even DS9 (my favourite ST series). Many of the books in SW are crummy, but not on the level of ST's book franchise. I still come back to Zahn's work on the SW book franchise... great stuff, better movie material than ep 1 and 2 have generated. Just the overall dynamic of the thing...

Bounty Hunters, Smugglers, Slavers, ALliances, Planets Divided etc Star Trek almost seems black and white in comparison. Not to say Trek is bad, its just went for a 7 year slide with Voyager and when/if I figure out where Enterprise is going we'll see if we have to tak on another 5 http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif

ST Movies vs SW Movies? No question there, no ST movie comes close to the original triology.
