OT: Far Cry (Game)

I just installed the demo for Far Cry by Crytek and Ubi-Soft and I have to say WOOOOOOOOOOOW.

The graphics of this game are absolutely breat takingly increable to the 10th degreee. Oh My God are they nice. http://www.farcry-thegame.com/uk/home.php only shows a few of the the wonderful rich quality of these graphics.

The game play is very good as well, but it is the graphics, the lapping ocean, hot sand, the folage, the sky, the quality of the renderings, and the atomsphere that the game generates that just take your breath away.

It has been a long while since I pulled out the VISA to buy a game, and well I am off to buy this game. The shadow effects are incredable. As you walk through the jungle you see the shadows on your gun. OMG....... I am sold.

Any ways don't take may word for it, download the demo or read a review, this game is in my opinion one of the best FPS to come down the pipe since I don't know when.

The main problems with it is the netcode for smoothing the lag in multiplayer, and the Level of Detail changes...
The artists doing the close-up models must not have been the same ones doing the far-away models... Some of the bendy trees change shape into a different tree as you get closer.

The outdoor rendering of sea, land and sky are quite amazing still.

I am just saying that great graphics are wasted on a game that boils down to who can point and click faster and more accurately. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

It just finished downloading this morning, all 3 and half gigs of the DVD. It is one of the best games I have seen, the lighting and physics are very impressive.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Never played this particular fps but I do know that at least some of them boil down to more than just "who can point and click faster". Cunning, teamwork and tactics can all play a part. I play a lot of RTCW: Enemy Territory, and although I'm certainly not the fastest or most accurate clicker, I can often triumph anyway through downright sneakiness.

And Dr Who sucks... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

AT, I understand exactly what you mean. I played both demos of farcry and also loved it enough to make the purchase. I have made it all the way through the game, so if you need hints just let me know.

hmmm, I just had a thought, use the farcry engine to create "Space Empires: Ground Assult" hmm, yet another thing to add to my 2-Do list http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

Cheers!

P.S. The only other game purchase I made this year is Star Wars: Knights of the old Republic. I highly reccoment this one too.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Went and grabbed the demo, installed it, go to play a single player game, and what do you know, it's multiplayer only. And nowhere in the download description does it say multiplayer only demo. That sucks.

Demos like this should always have a single player option. Multiplayer should be reserved for the retail Version only. The idea is to let people try the game. you shouldn't need multiplayer access to try the game.

There are a few games that have multiplayer demos but at least they are clearly marked as multiplayer.

I'm not a happy camper. So I guess this game lost me as a potential customer.

The talk I've seen on Slashdot is that the AI for Far Cry is very smart. You can't just sit there and let the 'drones' come to you and get shot. The AI will flank you if you sit still, and can actually play tricks. Sounds like this is a 'next generation' FPS game.

Piracy is murder and plunder on the high seas, and I don't even own a boat.

Probably shouldn't have said the specific avenue I used to get it.

Several of my friends have bought it because they saw me playing it and thought it looked amazing. Also, it's buggy as hell for me and crashes constantly. If I had bought it, I would have taken it back because of that. But no stores allow you take back opened software anymore.

Thanks David, I may take you up on this. I have to say the first time one of those THINGS jumped me while I was walking across the Tree bridges, I jumped out of my chair. Ohhhh so spoooky. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

When I am able to play it, it reminds me very much of Half-life. One part especially scared me, when you find the lead scientist dead and then the mutated ape thing jumps out at you. Very scary indeed.

Re: OT: Far Cry (Game)

The really scary part about it is that the game autosaved right there, about 2 milaseconds before that thing jumps in on you and kills you. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

I had to replace the who level because of that. And I tell you if this game has any draw backs the Auto Save system, or lack of quck save is one, and the fact that the AI seems to always spot me no matter the fact that they shouldn't be able too. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Still the game is great fun and I am enjoying it far more that I should. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

(I spent the better part of six hours taking my time taking out the four jaming towers. Ohhhhhh how I enjoyed sniping those SOB's. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif More ammo please....

My grenades just dissapear. I mean, I throw them, they fly, they land, they stop, they wait a couple seconds, they dissapear.

Your throwing rocks Narf. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Press the H key to cycle through the garnades you have. On the health, ammo, armo thingly to the very right you will notice it changing.

I have had many accidents with this and you will never forget the first time you blind yourself with a flash bang garnade or throw a rock instead of a shrapnel garnade.

Go for the Head shot if at all possible. Sometimes you get full armor from the bad dudes you kill.

Have you played with the Cry Engine yet? I have read that it is actually very good.

I tried the game on line and found only about 30 servers, and I kept dying for mysterious reasone or was kicked by PunkBuster for cheating. Well I guess PB is broken. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif

Re: OT: Far Cry (Game)

The only thing I wish this game had was a silencer for my pistol. the fact that you only get a silenced rifle later in the game sucks. I would have liked to find a sliencer in the first few shacks I searched.

Other than that it's a great game. I had a bLast going through it. Sadly it's replay value is not very good. So it makes the value a bit high when you consider the number of hours involved in completing the game.

Don't you need at least a 1Ghz processor for this game? Time for me to buy a new computer!

1 Ghz? hah.. i have an AMD XP 2100 + radeon 8500 and i have to run it at with all the options at the lowest settings (1024*768 too) and even then it's a measly 30fps. if you're gonna upgrade for this game, you'll have to splurge...

I came this close | | to wetting my pants with the Tri-gens in the indoor maps. I played the game fine with fairly high graphics settings on my 900mhz computer, but it was alot better on my friends 3 ghz.
