OT: Just Curious?
Off Topic I know...but I was curious?
How many people here are part of, or have been part of the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism)? Kana |
Re: OT: Just Curious?
What is that?

Re: OT: Just Curious?
Officially, the Society for Creative Anachronism is a Medieval 're-enactment' society which tries to recreate the more pleasant aspects of medieval life while pretending not to notice the less pleasant aspects. In practice, it's a sort of amalgam of historian/antiquarian, 'back-to-the-land'/survivalist, neo-pagan, and FRPG player interests. Many (if not most) members fall into all four catagories plus a few more. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Your local SCA group is generally a great place to find advice on things like survival crafts (soap making, hand weaving, small-scale animal husbandry, sustainable/organic farming) and to get in touch with all or most of the 'alternative' communities in your area.

Re: OT: Just Curious?
People who act out the middle ages, including mock battles.
Personally, I think the whole thing is a little weird. Except for the swords. I like swords. The real me likes swords the way my avater likes hammers. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif |

Re: OT: Just Curious?
I used to be in it because a friend was in it. The members weren't very friendly though and they seemed to have an enchanted view of the middle ages. As said they wanted to reenact it, but as one of them told me not anything that could be controversial. I mentioned the crusades (Knights vs. Saracens) and they said something along the lines of "oh, we avoid any of that sort of stuff"

Re: OT: Just Curious?
I was asked to come to one meeting. Im all for tabletop DnD and rather against playing it live so I was rather biased.
They had me try a sword fight (cane swords) and I had a strange style that rather kicked tail. That got them all excited talking about how I could rise in ranks and even become "king" of the US or something like that. Anyway, I never went back. |
Re: OT: Just Curious?
I was in it for a while in college, because my girlfriend was in it. The Crown Tourney, which determines who will be King, was held on our campus that year, and we went to the Feast afterwards.
I dropped out when my girlfriend broke up with me. |
Re: OT: Just Curious?
Well for one it isn't even close to being D&D.
As for the combat...it is quite a workout...ie hot and sweaty and tiring. Also there is a slight possiblity of getting hurt. Bruises are common...broken bones...quite possible. The feasts and large events...are parties gallore...women, and men, and lots of alcohol and food. Kana |
Re: OT: Just Curious?
One of the best times I ever had was going to a Renesance Festival in northern Minnesota. Not these Irish pub-type festivals, but an actual mini-city where people lived the whole summer as they did in King Arthur days. Authentic period food, hand made chain mail, armor, weaponry (yes, maces too) available for sale as well as most other crafts.
Actual live jousting tournemants and everything. Period style clothing / costumes and public displays / events. It really seemed just like being there. AFAIK it's still being held each summer, all summer long. |
Re: OT: Just Curious?
I like watching them battle, but basically it's just older Dugeons & Dragons nerds, but now their armed. Never saw any cute maidens. Just Janis Joplin look alikes with too many crystals. But man, those battles are cool and they can drink anyone under the table.
