OT: Can any one explain this to me?

I seem to be locked in a mind fog here, help.

7. John likes 400 but not 300; he likes 100 but not 99; he likes 3600 but not 3700. Which does he like?
900
1000
1100
1200

John has a strange fetish for the square of any base 10 number.

Why someone would have that particular fetish is beyond me http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Don't feel bad man. I took Calc in High School, got a decent score on the Advanced Placement test for it, so I didn't have to take it in college. Got as far as Calc 3 in college.

That was about six, maybe seven years ago. I'm going back for a managment degree now (been laid off in March each of the Last three years, time to get out of IT), and I took a placement test to figure out what I could get out of for the program.

I tested into pre-clac.
What the frack!?!?

Math and me, we used to be close.
*holds up two fingers crossed*
I'm so ashamed, I've let time come between us.

Not that I need any more math for this program but, really, what happened to my skills, yo?

Still 900
That's the only proposed number which have an obvious square root as other liked numbers.

Re: OT: Can any one explain this to me?

Well, if you divide 3600 by the numbers, 400=9, 100=36 and 1200=3, which is three numbers that are divisable by 3.

Even though it has been explained to me now, I still do not understand. This is the only question that gave me a challenge in the test.

0.0625 = 1/16th Was the other, but I figured it out. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Re: OT: Can any one explain this to me?

John likes "perfect squares" which are numbers whose square root is a whole number. Of the available answers, only 900 is a perfect square (30 x 30).

Slick.
