OT: Computer problem
Yesterday, my computer started glitching in city of hereoes and the halo demo. I havn't tested it on other games, but if it's affecting both it's probably a 3d problem. Basically, what it does is totally crash to startup and I generally have to either power down or turn off the power entirely to get it to start up right.
The only recent change that I remember is installing the halo demo the day before. I've viruscaned, ad-aware scanned, through scandisked and defraged. Oh, and it only happens after a bit. Generally not more than an hour. [ May 29, 2004, 23:11: Message edited by: narf poit chez BOOM ] |
Re: OT: Computer problem
Forgive this standard reply;
1. Update to newest drivers 2. Go back to old drivers if you updated and then the problem occured 3. Check your Video Card and see if it is running hot. 4. Check your system to see if it is running hot. 5. Check for viruses 6. Trun off resource hog programs that are running in the back ground. 7. Defrag your HD 8. Install more RAM 9. Get your gun 10. Shoot your computer. |
Re: OT: Computer problem
Dusting it out can't hurt either.
I like to find an outside spot with a light breeze so I can stand upwind and avoid the towering plume of dust kicked up when the case is opened. Check some of the chips and connectors to be sure they're still seated properly, too. PS: Hold the metal case and ground yourself too. |

Re: OT: Computer problem
To make this an ON TOPIC discussion I would recommend that you re-install SEIV and go from there.

Re: OT: Computer problem
Well, the shop got our computer working saturday and Combat Wombat and Sivran were invaluable in getting netscape running today. Thanks, guys.
I'd say 'what did I miss?', but I've been reading the major stuff on the mac. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif [ June 08, 2004, 07:17: Message edited by: narf poit chez BOOM ] |

Re: OT: Computer problem
I now have a computer problem that I would like help on.
Ever since I switched to DSL I have had no need for dial up yet my dial up box (manual dail up) keeps popping up. I can find no programs running that would want to use a dial up connection and when I say "ok" to connect it just errors out. Any idea what might be making the manual dial up box pop up? I have pretty much rulled out dialer programs and viruses. (Scanned the system with Pest Patrol and nortant before posting.) Thanks for any ideas or help. |
Re: OT: Computer problem
Check Start>Settings>Network Connections
If you dial-up account is still there your computer may be trying to use it. |
Re: OT: Computer problem
Certain webcomics are no longer showing up for me. This problem started on the pc and has moved to the mac and seems to be spreading, although I can't be sure. Yes, it is definitly spreading. A comic that was fine before is now nothing but white space. But what kind of virus would affect both a pc and a mac?
Huh? Side note: Anybody else like Eversummer Eve? [ June 10, 2004, 06:40: Message edited by: narf poit chez BOOM ] |
Re: OT: Computer problem
A server maintenence routine that automatically deletes files off of old accounts?
|
Re: OT: Computer problem
I'm pretty sure it's happening on more than one server. I'll have to check that, though.
Hey, go here, please: utlt.keenspace.com It's the Last one I checked. The two most recent where missing. At least we can find out if it's just me or not. and now the three most recent are gone. I've tried clearing my Cache. [ June 10, 2004, 08:30: Message edited by: narf poit chez BOOM ] |

Re: OT: Computer problem
It's just you.
I can see them. Do you have any kind of common gateway/router for both the PC and MAC? [ June 12, 2004, 08:46: Message edited by: Ruatha ] |
Re: OT: Computer problem
Thanks. There both going through a netgear ethernet hub.

Re: OT: Computer problem
And a D-Link dsl.

Re: OT: Computer problem
Then the problem is propably related to the D-link (if the netgear is just a hub and not a router), don't know all that much about them.
But go through the settings and check, until someone who know more about them wanderers into this thread.... To verify this, connect the pc directly to the net and by-pass both the D-link (router?) and netgear(hub) and try what happens.. Now off to bandage my ankle, it hurts from poking.... Re: OT: Computer problem
*mutters something about 'puny human, hurt by a three-inch mouse*
Thanks. Looks like I'm going to have to trace the wires first. Tommorrow. |
Re: OT: Computer problem
Can't connect to the wall, the d-link is a dsl modem. I have tried bypassing the hub, though.
|
Re: OT: Computer problem
Check your hub, some hubs have small black switch that allows them to be a gateway hub. Mine did. Also be sure to use the cable that came with your DSL to connect from your DSL to your HUB. Otherwise it may not work. (Thanks David avatar king For the advise on that. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif )
