All Time favorite SE moment

Well what is yours.

Mine is the time i sent a battle hardended fleet of ships up against a vastly smaller and weaker fleet.

Unfortanty the fleet was set to do not break formation and the arrow formation. So the first ship would move and then the enemy ships had enough fire power to kill the first ship and then blow up the engines off the next ship to take over.

So all my other ships would attempt to keep formation and move backwards to regroup.

this repeated over and over. Yes I actually took the time out to watch the repeat to see what happened...

End result. 100% loses for the tesco fleet. 0% for the enemy.

So many memories..

How about this week when my single ship behind enemy lines caught a couple dozen of their ships limping home with no escort after a big battle.

Turkey shoot!

The best part was it all hapened two squares away from his fleet of 80 ships that were perfectly healthy. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

(Yeah, I'm still losing the war, but I'll take what victories I can get. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif )

First time I convinced an AI to surrender.

An 8-player PBW game in which I finished 3rd, thru lots of diplomatic juggling plus vulching the losers of other players' wars.

I was surprised when Gecko showed up in an asteroid system (next to a system producing a lot of resources) with a fleet of 30 ships (mostly LCs). I just knew I was doomed so I thought the only thing I could do (since I had been have some success with fighters against him) was to move all my fighters to guard the hole and hopefully slow the fleet down while I put all the planets on emergency build. When he came through the hole to my system, he met about 60 small fighters. Gecko had taken Organic race and had lowered his aggression considrably since he planned on using missiles and ramming against me. When the dust settled, I had about 20 fighters left as his ships mounted a lot of missiles and armor (and only a few direct fire weapons which had a miserable time hitting). Oh, and NO PD.

Now, THAT felt good!

When I managed to make the Eee surrender just by using PPP.

That was before PPP was fixed and in vanilla Se4, but that was still great to see nevertheless.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">I wasn't in that game, but it sounds like the kind of thing that might have happened in the galactic bash (had it Lasted long enough for me to meet 'tigga).

My best moment was in a single player game, when I was play-testing the first vanilla Viking AI for Rollo. This must be back around v1.49 or even earlier, and in those days it was just about unheard of for an AI to capture a world with troops.

The vikings grabbed about 3 systems of mine- all planets intact- and forced me to turtle back to my core systems using stellar manip. I realised then that Rollo's AI (attached to MY graphics=-)would be one of the best in the community- probably THE best, and for a long while it was.

That was a great moment.

Seeing my name in the manual for SE4 Gold was a good moment too.

My greatest moment is yet to come though, it's scheduled for autumn 2008, and it is the public release of the final chapter of O&C. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

heh, probibly for me was the time I took over a tiny religios race and attempted to stop everyone killing me.
once I had convinced the kilrah to stop fighting (gifted him half my plannets) I had 1 whole system that I could call my own.
then the stupid drug addicted colour freeks decided that it was theres....
that would not have been so bad as they were fairly behind tech wise. unfortulay my politiking broke down as there was no way I was gona give up my Last system, and then there was war between my ally and the kilrah and I was stuck in the middle.
ahh well that was fun http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Re: All Time favorite SE moment

Any time i manage to outwit an AI - or when they are attacking me from all directions and i leave him a few suprises (mines, sats, fighter squadrants hiding in a storm - opaque to scanners (in 4 x 200 Groups) and he brings his main invasion and attack fleet through and i spring forward and he has missiles only and he gets completley routed - then within 3 game years i have 60% of his empire.

When i get cloaking and send raiding ships, 1 attack ship, 1 repair ship, 1 boarding ship and 1 space yard ship in a grouping with 1 carrier with 100 fighters and raid behind his emeny lines (colony ships, pop transports and troop transports and 100% shut down his offensive moves)

Oh when you send a cloaking ship deep behind enemy lines into his main system of power with a destroy sun and blow his system up. Usually causes a withdrawl and easy victory.

Although i have modded my games now so troops are easier and cheaper for him to research (AI) and they stick more to invasion instead of glassing - makes the game more interesting.

Oh Last but not least winning a 255 system game against 3 Hard AIs with maxed out racial traits - they can be long and tough and lat about 1 month.

Re: All Time favorite SE moment

During a sweet game, trade treaties went up to about 50%. I was in Last place but because of all the resources I was getting (about 1 million a turn) I could build a space yard and multiple space stations on nearly every planet. I got into a war when I wanted to spice up my turns and another race was taken planets in my space. We both built massive fleets (I had at least 2 fleets with 300 Battleships) and because of the warppoints everywhere and the preponderance of nebulas the game turned into a totally strategic war. Research was even. Resources were even. We both had huge fleets. Every turn I logged in wondering which direction he took and which fleet of mine could ambush him. The totally strategic game made a difference from the usual micro-management task.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">I'll second that one. I'm in the middle of my first single player game of the STM. Wonderful.

My greatest, fondest memory is when playing the Galactic Empire in the 5 Seas of Stablity game. I was on the losing end of a military operation. I had an enemy fleet approaching my home system with only 5 battleships to defend the WP. The fleet attacked with 25 warships. Imagine my surprise when I opened the game turn and found that my ships had survived undamaged, while the attackers were space dust. The next turn, I got an OCC message from the other player complimenting me on my ship designs.

Playing my first pbw game, assuming another player's race that was doomed but winning the game by forcing the stronger apponent to surrender due to massive riots. I sent fighter over planets to hover and never attack. Pretty cheezy now but 2+ years ago it worked.

Now it has to be using a star destroyer to eliminate huge fleets or building massive amount of star bases at a warp point that destroys waves of 200+ ships w/o a dent.

Best actual moment are opponents who think outside the box and are not predictable.

Re: All Time favorite SE moment

A few years ago, I found myself on a Navy vessel as an analyst, drilling circles in the ocean off a certain African country. For about a month. Well, after a week of having very little to do, I decided to load up a single player game of SEIV with the TDM mod pack (the only mod I had with me). I set it to 255 systems, high tech cost, and as many AI empires as possible, all set to maximum bonuses to see if I could do it. Never had been able to before. Well, that game sucked so much of my life, it was touch and go the entire damned way, from turn 5 till the end I had to really wrack my brain to stay alive and in the running. Every single turn brought something new that I agonized over. I snuck away at night and lay in my bunk for hourse playing that darned game.

Now, although I was still pretty new to SEIV, I thought I was an ok player until I started playing the AIs in TDM. And this game was tense. After hundreds of turns, I had one battle that I knew was critical. I watched it play out practically biting my nails. it was incredibly even, and to this day i remain convinced that the outcome of the battle hinged on one direct-fire weapon shot from my guys....that missed. The battle, I beleive, was lost becuase of that missed shot. Becuase that battle was lost, a strategic system was lost. You know the rest. For lack of a good die roll, a ship was lost, then a battle, then a system, then my empire. sigh. But it made me a total addict to SEIV.
