Online D&D Gaming --- Looking for new players!

Narf, Hugh Manatee and I were discussing starting an Online session of Dungeons and Dragons play on #se4. It would be like normal D&D, except over the internet on IRC. Who would be interested in participating? Make sure to answer all of the following questions:

When are you typically available to play (preferablly in GMT)? List all times. If the list of when you can not play is shorter, feel free to post it yourself.

Do you have any experience being DM?

Would you like to be a DM?

Do you have the player's handbook of the 3.0 or 3.5 edition? Players only need this, though it is not strictly necessary...

I have the E-tools program, which can help out tremendously with creating random characters, dungeons, etc., as well as electronically creating your own character.

I'm available from 8:00 PM GMT to 10:00 AM GMT.

Thanks, Fyron.

Would like to, but never having a stable time to get on-line, and not having a 3.0 book, makes it kind of difficult for me at the present. But who knows what the future may be? IF there is a time that I can particpate, I'll let you know.

Alneyan June 18th, 2004 09:11 PM

Re: Online D&D Gaming

I don't really believe I will be able to get a stable time for a play either. While I could manage to be available from 9 pm to 6 am (GMT), my connection is seldom available during the nights, and so I wouldn't be able to be Online at a given moment.

Assuming I can somehow manage to get there, I have no experience whatsoever being a DM, and so you don't want to put me as one. However, I have the 3.5 handbook at my disposal, so this matter would be solved. Assuming I can get Online in the first place obviously.

Re: Online D&D Gaming

Oh yeah, I have the 3.5 players, DM's and monster manual 1.

Re: Online D&D Gaming

Best time for me would be 10PM-7AM EST.
I think that is about 3AM-12 NOON GMT.

I have done this as a player before, but that was a L O N G time ago. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/blush.gif

I don't have a current Version players handbook.
(Don't have the old one anymore - unless it's in the attic...)

Have NO experiance DM'ing. Have NO desire to DM either.

Even if I don't play, I might sit-in on a session out of curiosity... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon6.gif

Ooooh i think i'm gonna post here...

Anytime past 8PM GMT, accept on teusdays or Thursdays and i'm usually out and about.

No i don't want to be a DM.

Yes I have the players handbook (E-Book) [and just about every other book in PDF format]

Cyclop June 21st, 2004 07:48 PM

Re: Online D&D Gaming

I would love to try this out. I do have experience DM'ing and playing. I have most of the books from AD&D and 2nd Edition as well as the vital 3rd edition rules.

I could volunteer as a DM to start since I have a nice module already made for a 4-6 party group to sleigh a Minotaur chief.

My best times to play Tues, Wed, and/or Thurs, 5pm-9pm GMT. I would suggest two days in a row.

All I would need is a list of usefull tool links or tools themselves for dice rolling, stats, etc.

I currently use ICQ#4093688 during work hours (3am-12noon GMT).

But I always wanted to play......

You don't need the books. The character sheets are legally downloadable. Just ask. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

No experience needed. I've played out one combat encounter and GM'd on the boxed begginers adventures for my brother 8 times.

Nothing I can do about 'no time'.

Sigh.

I'm available weekdays from 3 to 5 pm CST (GMT - 6, or 9 to 11pm GMT). Also from about 8 to 10 pm CST (2 to 4 am GMT). Weekends are too flexible to predict, but I should be able to fit a few hours in...

I don't have any materials, other than what I can download off the internet (character sheets, etc.)

I don't have any experience at D&D, but do have some minor experience with MUDS.

Sigh.

I am interested but for the next 3 weeks my availablity is weekends only (though if I know a time in advance I can schedule just about any two hour block)

I typically play clerics, rangers, cleric/rangers, fighters, fighter/thieves

have played mage/clerics, bards

I have not played 3.0 or above rules though, only AD&D original, AD&D 2nd edition (though I have the CD for 2nd Edition)nor do I have the 3.0 or above books

Oh, and I have DMed both AD&D original and 2nd edition but never 3.0 or higher. I am not interested in DMing at this point though unless as an emergency fill-in or a 1 time filler between campaigns.

I'd be interested, but I don't really have any 'always available' time at the moment. If people start settling on an agreeable time, I'll see what I can do to be available then.

I have played 3.0 a couple times, but it was a fair while ago

I don't have any of the books, and I definitely don't have the time to DM, though I have DM'd a couple small campaigns.

The old post had a few misunderstandings about time zone math. Hopefully I did not miss anyone. Feel free to yell at me if I missed you.

Also, apparently GMT does not adjust based on daylight savings time... oi. PST is actually GMT -7 right now, EST is GMT -4.

Cyclop | Tues, Wed, and/or Thurs, 1 AM to 4 AM,

Dumbluck | weekdays 9 PM to 11 PM and 2 AM to 4 AM.
| weekends maybe
Tanus | needs to work around schedule</pre><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">So in the revised schedule, it looks like 1 AM to 4 AM GMT on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday is the time to play, as our only DM volunteer (Cyclop) has only these times available. Keeping in mind that regardless of daylight savings time, the EST time listed below is confirmed as when Cyclop is available. This translates to:

GMT: 1 AM to 4 AM
EST: 9 PM to 12 AM
CST: 8 PM to 11 PM
MST: 7 PM to 10 PM
PST: 6 PM to 9 PM

If you are interested, please meet on the #se4 IRC channel tonight at 2 AM GMT (or 10 PM EST, 7 PM PST) for preliminary discussions, if you can. I am interested in joining but thought it was at 5am to me so I didn't bother. If it is 1am GMT then as I am at +10 I think I can handle 11 am to 2pm.
I have tried gamesurge and it let me register but I can't connect. The connection FAQ is uselss as clicking on it only reloads the faq menu. I don't have any IRC stuff, and mIRC says it only works for 30 days before I have to buy.
I don't have any current manuals but am prepared to get the Players manual if I am to participate.

narf poit chez BOOM June 25th, 2004 10:07 AM

Re: Online D&D Gaming

You don't actually need the manual. Technically, only the DM needs it, but there's enough between the other people that someone could probably help you.

Try trillian for IRC.

Randallw June 25th, 2004 12:17 PM

Re: Online D&D Gaming

I install Trillian (incidentally mistaking gamesnet for gamesurge), then go to gamesurge to see if it automatically uses Trillian. Now it asks me if I want the applet (and it asks me each time I go to test). I seem to be able to get #se4 but theres no one there. Oh well.

Anyway it appears that the game can at least be why I am awake. I have however started a part time job (government scheme, so no pay) recently that I do 2 times a week, which might be when the game is organised. Once the time is set I'll see about changing my schedule.

Edit: oh yeah my times, lets see
I am +10 GMT so

0100 to 1400. I usually have access to my computer, but sometimes my mother uses my computer to do her research and email.

A game stockist I can order from has monster manual and Fiend folio at less than half price. I know this stockist and they usually sell stuff half price because they know in 3 months the new edition will come out and no one would buy an old edition. Are the changes from v.3 to v3.5 so much that an old v3 monster manual would be a waste?

Chifo June 27th, 2004 09:37 AM

Re: Online D&D Gaming

The differences are minor to a large extent. However they do impact on the game mechanics, so you face the choice of buying all the 3.5 material or just sticking to 3E which works fine as it is.

Re: Online D&D Gaming

Campaign Beginning:
The campaign will be using the World of Greyhawk map. The adventure will start near a trading town just before a mountain pass route. Each adventurer will have different reasons for needing to get to the other side of the mountains (can be determined with DM). A new sign posted on the road heading toward mountains reads “Danger: mountains pass frequented by Orc raiding party, risk HIGH”

Weather & Climate:
The time frame is in the end of summer beginning of fall when the temperature just begins to drop during the night. Winds can pick up when bad weather approaches. Talk to local farmers for short term weather forecasts.

Character Creation:
Create your character using the 3.0 edition rules. You may equip your character with the starting average cash for your class (take average if multi-class).

Player can spend up to 40 points to create a character using the following chart:

Ability = Cost
9 = 1 point
10 = 2 points
11 = 3 points
12 = 4 points
13 = 5 points
14 = 6 points
15 = 8 points
16 = 10 points
17 = 13 points
18 = 16 points

Note:No psionics in the beginning please.

Please list your character on this forum once you have decided upon a race and class. Our first session is set for Tuesday, July 6th.

Well, if you don't mind dragging a total n00b along I'm in. I'm flexible on the time, but preferably after 7pm central (I don't do GMT, you figure it out and get back to me..... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif )

Anyway, the most D&D I've played was about 10 minutes of Never Winter Nights, I don't know how big a difference there is in the rules and character set up, but in that game I think I set up a healer monk and would like to test drive a similar character if possible. If you would kindly point me to a n00b character creation FAQ/tutorial, and maybe a few Online resources that would help a lot.

Also unless I'm mistaken in games like this communication between players is important right? Well in that case in addition to IRC I think we should set ourselves up with "Comms" that allow live talking between people. All you need is a mike and speakers, I can run(but not host) Comms and Mechwarrior 4 over a 56K dialup connection and can still hear people just fine. Ventrillo

Team Speak 2

^ those are the 2 most used in the MW community, I prefer and reccomend TS2 since it's easier on a Dialup connection.

Re: Online D&D Gaming

Once you have Open RPG installed and running (the Client no console shortcut), follow these instructions to make your character sheet:

1) In the Game Tree section at the top left corner, expand OpenRPG 1.6.1 (click on the little plus next to it).
2) Expand Templates.
3) Expand Tools.
4) Look for 3rd Edition Character Tool. Double click on it, or right click and select Use. It will add a new item at the top of Game Tree entiled 3rd Edition Character Tool.
5) Right click on this new item and select Design, Or double click on it.
6) Now you can fill out the sheet.

I have set up a server for us to use. It might not be up all the time of course. To join:

1) Run Open RPG Client no console (or start.py in the install folder).
2) Click on the Open RPG menu (all the way on the left).
3) Click on the Chat tab.
4) Click on where it says "No Name", in the first line of data fields. Enter the name you wish to display on the chat rooms. Click ok.
5) Now you have to exit Open RPG and reopen it to get the settings changes to take effect.
Note: You only need to change your name the first time you load up Open RPG.
6) After reloading Open RPG, click on the Game Server menu and select Browse Servers.
7) Locate the server Alkazhar in the list. If it is not there, the server is down. After selecting it, click on Connect.
8) Now, select an option from the Game section on the right. You probably want to just select the Lobby at first. Click on Join Room.
9) Now, Click on Close Window on the bottom left side of this screen.
