OT: Piercings

Ok, I know this is way OT, but I guess its no worse than political, religious, or war threads, so I guess it isn't too bad...

So, does anyone have piercings?? Specifically nipple piercings?? I just got mine done yesterday, and was wondering if anyone could give me some advice, or hints, or tell me of any problems I might encounter. Thanks.

Re: OT: Piercings

I've often been tempted by piercings, but I don't think I'd go for the nipple- I know it's supposed to enhance sensitivity and all that which sounds just fine but I'm too clumsy, and knowing me I'd rip half the skin off my chest off getting undressed one day. Ditto for bellybutton (a bit girly anyway) and double ditto for anything below the waist (&& above the legs)

Most face piercings look good, but you need a certain style which I just don't have. If I were to get pierced it would probably be the tongue.

Have also been tempted by tattoos lately. My mum would hate it, but she'd just have to get used to it.

I can't give you any advice beyond that you should be careful with them.
I really like piercings. well, piercings in ears. I don't know the English word for it. I don't like piercings on other places of the body. But when it comes to ears. YEAH!!! I get an adrenaline rush from a whole row of earings in an ear. Now I think of it. Where's my GF? She's got in both of her ears a row of 6 diffirent earings, oh yeah... sigh, the sheer beauty of it...
Good luck with your piercing. May the metaldetectors ignore you.
(most of the time they will, because of the small dimentions of the ring)

Although i did a quick search on that wonderful thing known as google. Try "Caring for Nipple Piercings"

Re: OT: Piercings

piercings

follow directions of the person who pierced it (if their a pro) remember to clean multiple times daily for a week then reduce frequency of cleanings
sugestions for quicker healing obtain aloe vera juice (from an actual fresh plant ) to cover the area after each cleaning this will promote healing
or a product called neosporin can be substituted in either case they will promote faster healing and provide antibacterial properties to prevent infection

tattoo's follow the same advice as above

with one important addition tattoo's are very sensitive to ultra violet light during the first few weeks to preserve the color of the new tattoo DO NOT expose it to the sun best reccommendation is that it remain covered for at least the firs week preferably for the first 3 weeks allowing full healing to occur then unveiling your new tat in all its full unfaded color glory

these are the things i have learned from friends girlfriends and five years in the navy

p.s. i do not have any tats or piercings
my paranoia does not permit such a easily traced item to become assoiated with me allowing me the option to change at any time and be as untraceable as possible (who said the navy still has my prints on file in their computer hhmmmm??? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif )

Piercings and tattoos were on my list of things to do when I got out of the military (like long hair, beard, gut). The problem is that they now violate my sense of "hackerness". Too "default". Too mainstream. I would have loved tribal tattoos but they are too common now.

However, I just started a conversation on the alt.hacker newsgroup on this same subject. We are working on the "next level". Piercings and Tattoos which include LED's and optic fibers inserted under the skin, to simulate borg and cyborg implants. The power source would be worn seperately. Now we just have to worry about the fact that the power arrangment we had in mind is already patented by microsoft.

I want an optic fiber insert of a tribal tattoo on my forehead which is invisible until I look like Im concentrating and then it starts glowing.
(coming soon to the techno-mage.com web site)

Re: OT: Piercings

Wow, that would be cool. Fiber optic fingertip lights. Or better yet, Fiber Optic nipple lights. How much can your body take? I saw a guy with coral inserts in his skull. I don't know if the coral was still alive or what but it made him look like Satan! I could get a fiberoptic display across my gut and put "Goodyear" on it or whatever else I wanted to advertise.

See my gut, drink Rolling Rock today!

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Actually coral is often used to replace bone because its organic, wont be rejected, and new bone fuses to it.

But I think he is referring to the guy who had increasingly larger and larger pLastic inserts placed under the skin of his head to make the skin grown outward abit. Then had coral "horns" put in. They have fused to his skull. I understand he has already sold his skull after his death for quite a bit of money.

Piercings and tatoos aren't something I've found appealing, yet. I might someday, but whatever.

Anyone got a link to a site with the guy with the horns?

Re: OT: Piercings

Tats, piercings and coral oh my!
No link, it was a magazine article that I just couldn't finish reading, then a few days after that I saw the same guy on t.v. and it was even grosser. I didn't know coral was compatible. I'm sure a simple search on the internet with "body modification" or "coral inserts" would work. On second thought "coral inserts" would probably get you something really nasty from the internet. There is also a Re-Search book called "Modern Primitives" It's already about 8 years old but still very interesting. And its about a 9.5 on the "eeww" factor.

Re: OT: Piercings

I have freed my tongue. It was surprizingly easy, but I would recommend that anyone who wants to try it out consider that there are some serious veins running right behind where you'll be cutting.

I got about a half an inch out of it, and the added flexibility was immidiately noticable. You're so well aquainted with the inside of your mouth that a change like that is kind of profound.

Re: OT: Piercings

That useless little flap of flesh is called the frenum, I believe.

It's been a goal of mine for years to have it cut, I just decided to do it myself instead of waiting for a local body-mod shop to take care of it, instead of telling me why I shouldn't have it done.

This is my only body-mod, the only one I intend to get, and the only time I have practiced self-surgury/mutiliation.

It's called 'freeing' the tongue because some people have such an overdeveloped frenum that their tongue is said to be 'tied'. Some people start their lives off without any frenum to speak of, I just got rid of mine.

Re: OT: Piercings

Tongue freeing: Ow! Doing it yourself? Owowowowowow!

Tongue splitting- cool! Once that's done, can you contrl the two halves of the fork independently? That would be cool.

I've always been intrigued by a shamanistic practice I read about once, I'm sure someone here will be able to tell more: It's that one where you drill a small hole (a few cm) in the top of the skull.
Apparently, allowing all that air to flow across the brain increases the oxygen levels and produces a constant euphoric/ creative high. Apparently. I'm sure it has some serious medical downsides too, and I've no idea awhat the long term effects would be, but in a controlled and sterile environment it would probably be OK for a while at least, and you could always patch it back up with some coral http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Gandalf Parker June 30th, 2004 03:30 PM

Re: OT: Piercings

Apparently splitting the toungue will not give you any abilities you didnt already have. If you can roll your toungue, or better yet twist it (roll it over), then that shows some extra control of those muscles which can be interesting to play with once its split. But if all you can do is stick it out then thats going to be about it. The one that most people DO have is flatten-it, point-it, flatten-it, point-it. If you practice that with a split toungue you get neat effect. Whats real fun is that if you stick it out "pointed" then its easy to overlook that its not a normal toungue, then spread the forks (flatten it) for the look on their faces.
(no, I dont have one. Ive never needed artificial means to fit in just fine with the strange crowd) http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">It didn't hurt that bad. I put an ice cube up against the area beforehand, both to restrict blood flow and to provide some numbing. The scalpel was quite sharp, and I didn't feel anything more than a tug at the cut.

Of course, the sight of the cutting, or the knowlege that I was doing it to myself, or the blood triggered an intense rush. Adrenaline, I guess. So I wasn't feeling any pain for a while after that anyway.

Now there's a dull ache, but it's not bad. And it probably wouldn't be there if I'd have left it alone after the main cut, instead of going back to try and take it further back on each side.

Damn, I'm getting a little bit of a rush just thinking about it. Hell of a thing. I can now understand, somewhat, why people get carried away with this sort of thing.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Some people have larger, or more flexible tongues. Some people are born without that particular frenum. And some people who don't fit into either of those two Groups decide to do something about it.

I was hanging out with friends today and one, who is seeking some new ink, led us into a tatoo/piercing place. I was curious what my little modification would have cost me, so I talked about it with them. They're piercing guy wouldn't do that kind of thing, they told me.
