Ringworlds
Has anyone got one of these built yet?
The Ringworld generator component is 2000 kt large.. so it won't fit on any ship, so how do you build one? |
Re: Ringworlds
You have to build starbases on the location. So, you have to build space-yard ships, lots of them. Given how long it takes to build the starbases, you want to build them all simultaneously, and that means 11 space-yard ships for a ringworld and 21 space-yard ships for a sphereworld. Wait till you see the expenses of maintenance and building with 21 space-yards simultaneously. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

Re: Ringworlds
Ahhh. K.
Thanks! I'm scared to see those maint. costs. |
Re: Ringworlds
Ok, I build a ringworld, but I'm having some problems with it - I can't land any settlers there! I've tried a rock colony ship and a transport full of population. The colony ship tells me there is no planet to colonize and the transport doesn't have anything to drop people onto.
How do you get people on a ring world once it's built? |
Re: Ringworlds
Fear having time and resources to build those things!!! http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/ima...ons/icon12.gif

Re: Ringworlds
BigBlue- That sounds like a bug that showed up a few Versions back. When you click on the sector containing the ringworld do you just get blank space ?

Re: Ringworlds
The system with the ringworld started out as empty except for a nebula. I created a star, and then brought in a fleet of 11 ships to build the battle stations to house the components. When the stations were built, I created the ringworld. Now when I click on the ringworld, the detail display in the top right looks just like it does when I click on any empty space in the system view. No colony ships recognize the ring as a planet and transports do not list the ring world as a target for dropping population.
Can anyone suggest a work-around for this? I thought about putting cargo containers (full of population) and colonizing modules into the design of my component battle stations. Would that work? Also, is it worth is? It would seem that a ring world (or sphere world) would have hundreds of times the surface area of a huge planet. Do the rings/spheres have hundreds of facility slots or a population limit that is in the tens of billions? If not they would not seem to be worth the effort to build. Re: Ringworlds
Currently, the default config has a ringworld equivalent to five large planets and a sphereworld equivalent to ten. Yes, the real numbers should be in the thousands. But think... a single planet has a single build queue. It would take centuries of game time to fill one of these worlds with facilities. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif You can change the default settings though. I don't know what the limits are, but I bumped ringworlds and sphereworlds up to 5 and 10 'huge' planets instead of 'large' in my custom set. 80 Billion standard for a sphereworld and 250 facilities, going up to 96 Billion and 300 facilities for a race with 'advanced storage techniques'.

Re: Ringworlds
If anyone has built and populated a ring/sphere world, would you please share the steps you took?

Re: Ringworlds
Yep this is a bug that was found in the beta too. Your best bet is to create one on a already existing star, I think creating one is what was causing the problems. Iv'e put up quite a few ringworlds and only run into this problem a couple times. To be honest, I doubt ring/sphereworlds will be any use in multi as they are so time consuming, but building them in single is great for the wow factor, not to mention the huge facility, population, cargo space.

Re: Ringworlds
Well, I have built a ringworld! And colonized it too! It does take an immense amount of time, but wow!
I built a couple planetary improvement facilities, a space yard and filled it with monolith facilities. As it ages, it become more and more impressive. (I think the Last time I looked at it was producing 20k of every resource!) |
Re: Ringworlds
What did you do to colonize it?
|
Re: Ringworlds
Quite sorry, tahts very top secret, (Cant let you regular people know!)
I just used a colony ship (but I have a more recent Version, seeing that Im a beta tester) |
Re: Ringworlds
hummm...
im working on building... *gasp* a sphereworld.... so far ive had to colonize a ton of planets and build a ton of monolith facilities on em and the mantinence costs dont scare me no more... 9planets x 25monofacilities x 900recorces = 202500minerals 202500organics 202500radi... PER TURN =] but ill tell ya it'll take agood coupla hours and a good amount of population for that puppy.... |
Re: Ringworlds
ok I have a small question, With Sphereworlds, If you have one, and it encases the sun,(as sphereworlds do) once you build it, technically shouldnt all the rest of the planets in the system change to ice? with the sphere soaking up all solar energy?
just a thought. |

Hey, that's a hard-SF question worthy of the good old 'zines of the 1930-50's! http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif My semi-hard-SF answers: certainly not if they're inside the orbit of the Sphereworld. And maybe not if they're outside the orbit, since maybe the "sphere" is fairly porous and lets lots of light through (perhaps it's more of a "basket-weave" world than a solid sphere - dunno, never built one http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif). I do like the question, though... |
Re: Ringworlds
Well actually if you really built a ringworld or sphereworld there would be no other planets in that system and maybe a few of the surrounding systems in the case of the sphereworld. They would make up the material you use to build it. At least thats the theory I haven't built one in real life yet so I don't really know how much material it would take http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif .

Re: Ringworlds
Range Error.
Has anyone had this problem with building a Ringworld? Its so sad to see all my star bases collecting dust in orbit http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/ima...ons/icon12.gif |
Re: Ringworlds
Is your game hosed after you get the range error? I was getting a range error that hosed the game when I had ship movement lines turned on and I sent a colony ship to colonize a distant planet.
You might want to email Malfador and tell them about your problem (and send them the savegame). I did with my problem and they responded right away. |
Re: Ringworlds
from the screenshot i saw, the ringworld is about the size of the sun... on the malfador screenshot page.. and i saw planets around it. thats why I was wondering
|
Re: Ringworlds
Well, to help defray the maintenance costs, temporarily mothball the spacestations
Until all is in readiness |
