You know

All in all, SEIV is a great game, however, what really drives me insane are all the lock ups and Range Check Errors I now get.

I can not get 200 turns into a good game with out an AI player generating a lock up. I even had to switch those AI players to human, just to find out what was causing the lock up, and discovered that the AI is attempting to retrofit an escort with a Destroyer design. AAAaaaaarrrrrrggggggg!

I have not been able to play a game now past 200 turns. This seriously jepordizes my happyness, and sanity.

The game is awsome though. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

Re: You know

Are you using v.1.19? Only error I've gotten there is when I was screwing around with the data files, which caused the AI to build several thousands satilites per planey, all with components that sat. didn't support.

Hrm. Do you mod the files alot? (I don't get lots of errors unless I make mods).

I get an 'out of memory' error once a while which is odd since I got 512M memory. but I dont mind when that happens I'll just restart and load a autosave files.

There seems to be a memory leak. If you have WinNT/2k you can see the memory usage increase with every turn.

Re: You know

You know, one thing I have noticed after the new patch is that after starting up a saved game, my ships mover really fast. I am talking lightening fast. I know thats not normal, but I think it may be related to the mem leak. You see, the move real slow, and then after a shut down restart, they blaze.

Not a programer so hay. Sound it off you guys. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

Re: You know

The other day when I had a problem with my engine mod I made the AI races human to see what had happened. Well every AI race had ships that really zipped compared to the way mine usually move at least 3 or 4 times the speed I normally see (and no I don't think it was because they had more engines on their ships ) http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif. I also get very slow movement from my ships if I use the modem then start the game. So I have seen 3 different speeds that these ships move now. I have no idea what is causing these speed changes.

I always have to restart my computer after using my modem the game really crawls too slow to play then expecially if I have built a good number of ships.

More then likely this is becuase you have a software modem which eats available resources.

Re: You know

Actually, I had a problem with the animation speeds too. Happened right after I'd been surfing the web for a couple hours, then tried to play. Not only was the animation fast, I had trouble with images appearing and disappearing (like the video problems from demo Version 0.56 - buttons disappearing, ship/planet pictures disappearing from the upper right-hand window (sector display?), etc.). A restart fixed everything...

Hmm, I have seen the ships move verry slow and verry fast too. I noticed that when I turn on the CD music(I don't use the CD) the ships move slowly. Why do the ships move fast though? http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/ima...s/confused.gif

Re: You know

Strangely enough, I typically play SE IV with my software modem running, my IM service humming, and I play for multiple hours at a time without slow down. My machine is average, and I use DX7.1a.

Go figure. The biggest *****er has the stablest game. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/ima...ons/icon10.gif

Re: You know

The one reason that I doubt that the modem is eating up the resources is that the time I saw the ships moving very fast the modem was running at that time. So there is a connection but I don't think the problem is too many resources used if that was the case why would it speed the ships up?

I just went back and tested it right now. While the modem is running the ships move at lightening speed after I disconnect I bet they will crawl. I have no idea why the speed of the ships is tied into wheither or not my modem is running. So its probably more involved than just the resources and yes my modem is a winmodem. This is the first computer I have bought that has had one of these monstrosities but the price was so good I couldn't pass it up especially to replace my ancient 133. I believe that I am running one of the direct x7.? I forget which was the Last update I ran.
