Access Violation by Starfuy.exe

Well, looks like it might be a good game, but it crashes after picking the ship, ship name and captain name and loading to a screen that says this. Ideas?

(I already have video going to safe mode)

You didn't mod any of the data files, did you? You shouldn't be able to in the demo, and I don't know what happens if you try, but sometimes modding certain data files would give errors like that in the beta Versions...

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Hehehe...Um, I think I might have then said great game, but now that I modded it, it doesn't work any more. No, I downloaded it, I installed it, it crashes. If I can't figure it out in the next day or so, it gets deleted.

What are you're computer's stats?

Also, if you've got a hi-speed connection, download it again and install it. Perhaps the file got corrupted or something zany like that.

Unfortunately, I am getting the access violation as well when I hit "play". Setup screen works fine. First I get a floating point error, then I get the access violation.

Re: Access Violation by Starfuy.exe

Hello, I just installed the demo to starfury myself. The first test run went well..although i havent figure out how to mine asteroids yet. (if thats possible..then again i didnt see robo miners on the destroyer lol)

I get the same " Access violation at address 0048a97a in module 'starfury.exe'. Read of address 00000000 " *cough*

Ill try to redownload the file and reboot. It looks promising. Maybe this will be the next step up from an old game called privateer (back in the 480sux days)

if cheese will fix the problem sure thing! heheh

I, did some tackling of the issue. It seems theres something wrong with the regristry entrys. After i removed the entry, starfury ran fine, however when i tried to run it again it crashed. *shrugs* Hey if this were a full verson that i paid for id be upset, but its a beta demo, http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif ..well i think it is anyway. *shrugs*

Just my 2 cents, oh and btw, dont ram asteroids or other ships..chicken doesnt seem to work lol.

Re: Access Violation by Starfuy.exe

Hi, for all those having problems running the demo, I am a beta tester, and I think I can help you find or fix the problems, or get bigger guns on the issue.
First off, update all your drivers, Sound/video being most important. WindowsUpdate is a good site to do this at, but if your hardware vendor does not have WHQL drivers, you will have to go hunting. There are a lot of sound card and video card companies out there, if you need help finding the driver you need, just ask. Also, getting your OS patched up probably will not hurt.
If this does not solve your problem, please submit your computer info (processor, RAM, OS, and other info) here or to Aaron, and give the specific error message.

Narf! hehehe. Ty for the welcome!

So far the demo is pretty cool. I hope they tweak the ship movements though somehow. It just doesnt feel like a destroyer flying around. *shrugs*. After looking at the files, i can see how Mod friendly this game will be, just like space empires. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Replayability is waay up on the scales http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

I am currently putting the latest beta Version through its paces and have not encountered this, and my understanding was that it was fixed in the release Version of the demo. Since you are encountering the issue, I would suggest that if you see (don't see?) the problem again, take a screen shot (print screen, then paste to Paint), and save the game. Then send the save, the screen shot and a description of your computer to Malfador. Maybe your system is revealing some portion of the bug that still remains.

Re: Access Violation by Starfuy.exe

Have the latest DirectX. Have Detonator Drivers 44.03 (the latest ones have some problems with some of my other games). My sound card drivers are up to date.

My Video Card is a GeForce4 Ti 4600
My Sound Card is a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz
My Processor is a 1.1 Ghz Athlon T-Bird
I have 512 MB of RAM
My Operating System is Windows 98 SE

My error occurs after attempting to hit "start" to launch the game.

First error message:
Exception EInvalidOp in module STARFURY.EXE at 00084EEA.
Invalid floating point operation.

Second error message:
Access violation at address 0040561C in module 'STARFURY.EXE'. Read of address 7000B124.

I've downloaded the demo from multiple sources, and this happens every time. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

Re: Access Violation by Starfuy.exe

Ehh, its kinda silly. I have all the updates to XP home, direct x 9 etc...it still gives me the memory crash. Yet, if I remove all the entrys in the regristry, boom..it works fine..at least until a reboot.

Oh well, its still a decent look at the engine. Seems like this will be very flexible. I still havnt found any remote mining drones or anything to do with mining yet. Although im not sure its necessary.

I wonder, if they will allow us to import a universe from space empires V. either way, it seems this program will do what other software companys said would happen but threw in multi textured objects to cover up the bad gameplay lol. *eg eve Online* Bah, thats a waste of money.

Re: Access Violation by Starfuy.exe

Hotfoot - I received the same error. Likewise, after d/l from multiple sources and having the latest DirectX/GeForce Drivers. My stats are as follows:

Intel P4 1.9g
ASUS P4TE Motherboard
Intel 850 chipet
VisionTek GeForce 3 ti500
512 mb RAM
Win98SE

The only thing I can think of is that I have the developer SDK Direct 9+ installed on my system since I use it for programming. Hmm...would not think that would make a difference though, just slow it down some, since it contains more debugging functions when running. However, we are both using GeForce cards and running on Win98SE.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Well, I hate to break the news to you, but there aren't any remote mining drones anywhere to be found.

There are mine layers, though... if your ship lacks a rear weapons arc (like most Terran ships, the cocky b*****ds http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif ), buy a mine layer, let an enemy trail behind you, then lay a mine... BOOM! Out goes his forward shield... or if you modded in an Ion Pulse Mine, you could even disable his engines so you can sneak around behind him and start hitting HIM where it hurts! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

That is to say, yet another Geforce user which is having trouble. Is there anyone with a Geforce able to play the demo? If so, with what drivers? Or perhaps it is only a chance occurrence. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Geforce here, no problem with the Last three driver releases.

Alneyan September 24th, 2003 08:39 PM

Re: Access Violation by Starfuy.exe

So it was merely a chance occurrence, as Geforce are /were the most used graphic cards. Even with the latest drivers, it is not working for me. But perhaps it is because my computer itself is too slow. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif (700 mhz, not fast nowadays, with Windows XP and common components)

While upgrading to windows 98 is always an option to improve performance http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif , your system sounds fast enough, and you'll have enough ram.

Sure, "upgrading" to 98 isn't a bad idea, but my connection doesn't work with 98. I should reinstall it though simply for playing a few games when XP is using too many resources. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif (I had to remove 98 to free one of my partitions a few weeks ago)

The problem with Star Fury seems to be when loading sounds for me. Is there a way to remove sounds in the game? Perhaps it would help, or perhaps not.

I have DO (Dungeon Odyysey). I find whenever I play that, and then try to play the SF demo, SF fails. I have to do a reboot, then I can play the SF demo. Looks like the two games might not play well together in the same sandbox... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif

Ok, this is interesting. The issue probably exists between the sound card drivers and DirectSound. Definately driver upgrade, and by any chance are any of you using onboard (on the motherboard) sound? That stuff SUCKS. The drivers stuck to my OS like a hobo on a baked potato.

One thing about the music. I can reload a saved game with the music running normally without the game crashing. Only if I start a new game does it crash immediately upon entering space unless I rename the music directory.

I think its a soundcard problem.
I tried to update my nvidia soundcard drivers. Witch didnt work (it broke down during installation or something).

But it did install some files becaurse my sounds are working now. After replacing the sounds directory in the Starfury directory my sounds were working again.

But you arent missing anything, i dont like the sounds at all.

[TIP] copy/paste your sounds directory out of the starfury directory and the game should work!!!!!!!

Re: Access Violation by Starfuy.exe

Certain sound cards are notorious for having issues if they don't have current DirectX certified drivers for them. If all else fails try disabling Direct Sound or decreasing acceleration.
