Questions? Need help? Look here
Hello all! As a beta tester, I have had to go through (or help others go through more like) technical issues.
Minimum System requirements: http://www.shrapnelgames.com/malfador/Starfury/8.htm Demo availability: http://www.shrapnelgames.com/malfador/Starfury/6.htm Patch one has been released. Get it at the above link. If you are having problems running the game, make sure you do the following: Update video card drivers (this one is important!) www.nvidia.com www.ati.com www.matrox.com www.sis.com These are the four biggest ones out there... or you can go to WindowsUpdate to get the latest WHQL drivers for your specific card. Update sound card: www.creative.com www.hercules.com www.turtlebeach.com * An issue with the SoundBLaster drivers has been found. Updating to the latest drivers will fix this, and the upcoming patch will fix this as well. * There are many others, do a google search on your particular brand. WindowsUpdate might be of assistance too (but WHQL is often skipped by some manufacturers) Get the latest DirectX (current is at 9.0b I believe). http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx This is crucial, you need to get this. Update any other drivers for older pieces of hardware. If you are not confident with computers, I would not reccomend updating your BIOS however. Updating your OS by going to WindowsUpdate might make a difference, or it might not. Also, with all the nasty viruses and things, getting the latest from MS should be a top priority. Computer cleanup chores: Defrag your harddrives, run scandisk, and check to make sure you have enough room for Windows to create swap files (more than 250 megs is usually enough free hard disk space to have). All of this can improve overall system performance. However, this probably will not fix problems, but improve performance somewhat (for those with less powerful PCs) Guide to setting up StarFury: Click "Setup" in the menu that appears when you first open the game. This will open a screen of settings you can change. You can probably leave the display driver alone. You might have more than one option here, depending on your configuration. If you are having issues with the game, and you have more than one option in the menu that pops up, you could try changing this. For faster newer PCs, pick a higher resolution and higher color (32 bit is best, almost all video cards support it). Turn these settings down for improved performance. You can run the game in Windowed mode to allow use of other applications. Direct3D device I would reccomend leaving at its default, if you have a very modern video card, you can try out the T&L option for better overall graphics. If you have some issues with graphics, you can try changing this, however, RGB emulation will probably be slower. Try changing video memory from Auto to Safe if graphics are garbled in game. Default is Auto. Sight distance is how far away objects have to be in order for the engine to render them. The higher, the more ships you can see at range, however, the slower the game may run. Same thing with stellar detail. The higher, the nicer the graphics, but the slower your computer will be able to run. Again, same thing with background detail. The higher, the better the ingame graphics, but the slower your computer will run. Edit: Stickied for the time being for technical help. [ October 22, 2003, 22:33: Message edited by: Instar ] |

Not every bug is the Users fault, ya know.

I've seen this mentioned, but no idea how to do it. Put your graphics in safe mode? How exactly is that done?
|
Re: Questions? Need help? Look here
when you star Starfury, press Setup instead of play. The more advanced options are in there.
|
Re: Questions? Need help? Look here
No, I did not mean to imply that people are causing their errors, it is just a little bit of maintenance and your computer can run a lot better!
Too bad no mods are about to sticky this, I think it is worthy info for everyone to read. Any factual errors or additions you think I should include, just say so. |
Re: Questions? Need help? Look here
He didnt even say it was anyones fault he just putting this as ways that could prevent problems

Re: Questions? Need help? Look here
Regarding the video drivers, if you are using a laptop, you'd probably be better off going to the laptop manufacturer's site rather than the video card manufacturer's, since laptop video cards often have custom features designed for a particular brand of PC. Just a word of advice - I once spent several hours trying to update my video drivers and getting strange errors in the installation only to find that the drivers I downloaded weren't even the right ones for my video card! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

Re: Questions? Need help? Look here
Hey, has anyone had any problem with the game freezing for absolutely no apparent reason?? Well, when it did it to me, I eventually figured out that if you hit the windows key, then go right back into the game, it becomes "unfrozen". However, a couple of the ship displays, especially my ship status, goes all garbled. I tried to set my video mode to "Safe", and downloaded the newest Version of DirectX, so I don't see what the problem could be. I'm running a newer system, at 2.2GH, 256 MB of RAM, Intel 82845G graphics card, (at least that's what I think the #'s are http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif ) Can anybody help me?? Please??

Re: Questions? Need help? Look here
There are some issues with things like alt-tabbing/minimizing and stuff of that nature that pop up from time to time for some players. I know that Aaron is working on this problem and hopefully will have it completely resolved!

If this does not solve your problem, try contacting Aaron directly. I hope this trouble with onboard video is not a trend... |
Re: Questions? Need help? Look here
Alright, I'll try that. Thanks for the help.

Re: Questions? Need help? Look here
I run StarFury in a window that is one level in resolution below my main resolution and I haven't had any major problems. Of course since it is a window, I don't have to worry about it getting messed up from being minimized, as I don't have to minimize it.

Re: Questions? Need help? Look here
I had the same problem as Renegade 13. The game froze, I window-keyed out, came back and the freezing was gone but some chumpy graphics appeared on the mouse and menus. Resolved it by saving and restarting the game.

Re: Questions? Need help? Look here
I'm noticing that a lot of the systems (though not all) that are having problems have AMD processors. Is anyone with an AMD processor able to run?
|
Re: Questions? Need help? Look here
Yep. AMD 1700+ (i.e. 1.4 GHz) here.
|
Re: Questions? Need help? Look here
Updated all drivers/directx but still the freezing is spoiling the fun as I have to exit the game and start it again in order to get rid of the messed-up display. Reloading the game is no good; it is required to restart the game. This happens ~every 5-10 minutes. Any ideas? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/confused.gif

Re: Questions? Need help? Look here
FYI: I have the following system..
ECS Elitegroupe K7S5A motherboard AMD Athlon XP 1700+ (1.46ghz) nVidia GForce2 MX/400 64mb SoundBLaster Live! Value 256 Meg RAM 30gig HD, 52x CD-ROM, The game runs fine for me, but early on the game was crashing to desktop without warning. With Aaron's help the problem was tracked down to the sound card. I found updated drivers at www.soundbLaster.com and it has never crashed since. The nVidia drivers I'm running are v45.23. The SBLive drivers are v 5.12.2.252 (7/24/2002) I have the original v1.0 of my motherboard BIOS. None of my devices are sharing IRQ's except for my USB controllers and my sound card. (but I have no USB devices plugged in to my computer) I've heard that many motherBoards have problems with AMD, but most if not all of these have BIOS patches that fix the problem. One other note,.. the only 'active' program on my taskbar (icons on the bottom right!) is the volume control. (I'm a firm believer in running programs WHEN I need them, and not having stuff running IN CASE I will need them.) I hope some of this info helps, have a great day. Re: Questions? Need help? Look here
My system:
AMD 1.3 GHZ 256 MB Ram HD 60 GB Windows 98 Geforce 4/64MB 2 USBs beign used (Palmtop and Webcam) And in my system the game run smootly (the demo), never having to upgrade any drivers or any kind of problems (but i use the safe mode)... And i'm using the highest graphics possible in the demo, and it runs normally, never having a hang or anything.... So the AMD processr aren't the problem... One thing i did was getting all the windows fixes from microsoft some time ago and i never had any problems with games anymore... Hope this helps... |
Re: Questions? Need help? Look here
I am seeing a lot of problems with AMD things... perhaps upgrading the flash BIOS could fix some issues (however, if you incorrectly flash your BIOS, you can really screw it up!, so be careful).
Your motherboard brand might be hard to figure out. Most big companies have their own motherBoards that you can update at their site. Otherwise, you are going to have to look up your mobo manufacturer and see what BIOS updates are there. Edit: Just realized not many might understand what I mean. The Flash BIOS is a chip on your motherboard that is the lowest of the low level things, and acts as the interface between all your computer components. You might have to update that. Your specific mobo manufacturer has details, look for your manual, or look right on the motherboard itself to see the brand. [ September 30, 2003, 17:36: Message edited by: Instar ] |
Re: Questions? Need help? Look here
I think its more an issues of the sound card. I use the SoundbLaster Live Value. Anybody else, too?

Re: Questions? Need help? Look here
Wel at least you can see how spiffy the game menu looks http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif
|
Re: Questions? Need help? Look here
Well, that is a slight improvement. If you cannot launch the game, try changing options in the settings menu, or other things. More detail on my first post.
And I thought DX was supposed to take care of all these issues... Some people have had success by renaming the sounds folder, something wrong with soundcards or something. |

Re: Questions? Need help? Look here
One note on the freezing game. When it freezes and you alt-tab out and back in - the graphics become messed up BUT if you wait for a few minutes it unfreezes and the graphics are the same as before, i.e. not messed up. Probably this is my system's fault and I predict a full reinstall http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

Re: Questions? Need help? Look here
I have never had any problems arise from running the SF beta with both Norton Antivirus and Norton Personal Firewall running in the background.
SF has always had problems with alt-tabbing. Either run the game in windowed mode, or do not alt-tab. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif [ October 03, 2003, 00:28: Message edited by: Imperator Fyron ] |
Re: Questions? Need help? Look here
alt-tabbing was used just to check whether the game or the computer hung. I also have both Nortons running on my system.
Because of that obligatory pause I started smoking more http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon8.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif |

Are high scores available in the demo? It has always been greyed out and I haven't been able to open it up. But when I die it says I set a new high score, but it is still greyed out. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/confused.gif

Re: Questions? Need help? Look here
Well, I'm using a soundbLaster audigy live, and I have problems with the music, as the game crashes everytime I have music set to 'enabled', sound effects do work tho... I have installed the latest drivers (using auto update), but that didn't help. I also have this problem with DO, where the game crashes as soon as it's done loading the level (and, I guess, tries to change the tune currently playing?) if music is enabled.
edit : oh, I have the latest patch installed too http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif [ November 11, 2003, 09:32: Message edited by: ace joh ] |
Re: Questions? Need help? Look here
I know this is late, but I think the Audigy drivers aren't updated through windows update for some reason. Go to creatives site to get them.

Re: Questions? Need help? Look here
This is my experience with the demo so far (by the way I bought the full game it behave the same).
I try to play the game on my AMD (=2000Ghz pentium), 512 ram and and a GeForce256 (yes a little dated) video card, and a Sound bLaster card. I also have Windows XP and Windows 98 (dual boot on the same system). The first time that I try to play on WinXP it crashed, something with the video I thought. So I try it on Win98 and work with no problems.... Went back to WinXP but this time I changed the resolution on my system to 1024x768 (my normal default is 800x600)before I try the game, and it is working fine now. It seems that the trick was to switch the resolution on my system before I played the game. My brother on the other hand has a pentium 850 mhz (slow by today standards but well up there with the game requirements), 512ram , a Geforce2(beter than mine), and a SoundBLaster live. He also has dual boot WinXP and Win98. He played the game on Win98 and had no problems. On WinXP he has a problem with the mouse, very slow, and the keyboard commands also...we have to work on that...but at least he can play on Win98 with no problems. Will have to go and chase drivers again, all the drivers were the latest 3 months ago. I hope that my comments are helpfull. [ February 27, 2004, 21:57: Message edited by: Campeador ] |

What did you have to lower your resolution -to-?
EDIT: Even at the max SF supports I'm getting a solid 30 FPS in the first system of my mod..and my system is slower than yours. Two things: 1- what is your graphics card? 2- is Direct3d T&L HAL selected under 3d device? [ August 05, 2004, 23:58: Message edited by: Phoenix-D ] |

Re: Questions? Need help? Look here
I'm...really in need of some help. I don't understand why, but I get this error message. over and over and OVER.
"Access violation at address 0046C6FB in module 'starfury.exe'. Read of address 000000EC." Thoughts? Comments? Solutions? |
Re: Questions? Need help? Look here
Well, that would really only provide useful information to Aaron.
When exactly does the error occur? Is this stock SF, or have you made some changes? Using a mod? If so, what mod, and/or what kind of changes? |
Re: Questions? Need help? Look here
Well, I did try to add an item to the components list. But after the first try, I made everything as it was previously (stock).
The error windows begin appearing once I execute the menu program. I have to click okay on a dozen or so windows before I even see the meneu show up. If I alt tab or simply click away, a new one appears on top of the initial menu. If I select settings, I have another few identical windows to go through before that shows up. That about sums it up. UPDATE: I attempted to press the button to play, and went through about 30 of those windows before getting a new one. "Exception EAccessViolation in module starfury.exe at 0006CB7F. Access violation at address 0046CB7Fin module 'starfury.exe'. Read of address 00000030." |
