ME Problems?

I have Windows ME, and even though the requirements don't mention that particular Version of Windows, I was told that it should work. Well, it isn't for me. I keep getting a CD-Rom error, and the computer tells me to put the game disk back in the cd-rom and restart the game. Well, first of all, the disk is in the computer already, and when I do open the tray and close it again, all the computer wants to do is re-install the game. Is anyone else with ME having a similar problem? Is there some sort of patch that can be made if it is a ME problem?

Sounds like a CD-Rom error not ME
Though it could be ME to think about it

If you have another CD-Drive then try that and if it still dont work then we know its ME

The game wants the Game CD to be inserted? Well, I only have the beta here but no MM game ever required the game CD IIRC. They start entirely from the hard disk. Try a fresh install of the game.

Is it one of those blue screen of deaths telling you to put the disk in?

It could also be that the game was reading music off the disc and windows complained for it since files were in use...

I imagine you've got the auto-insert nootification left on, and the disc appears to have the installer set to autorun.

Try ejecting the disc before starting Starfury.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">I did that Last night. Deleted the game and installed it again. Came up with the same results. So I don't know if it's my cd-rom, or something to do with ME. I haven't had any problems with any other games using the cd-rom.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">No, it wasn't the blue screen of death. The auto-insert probably was left on. How do I turn that off? And the only thing I didn't do was ejecting the disk before starting. I'll try that tonight. If anyone else has any suggestions, I'd appreciate it.

Re: ME Problems?

1) Right click on my computer, select properties.
2) Go to the device manager tab
3) Find your CD drive (should be at the top of the list, under the CDROM Category)
4) Press Properties
5) Go to the settings tab.
6) Clicky the "Auto Insert Notification" checkbox as you like, then hit OK to save the change.

This will make it so windows won't pop up and do stuff as soon as you put a disk in. I use a shortcut on my desktop (in quick launch bar beside start) in case I actually do want to run whatever's on the CD.

Hi Guys:

I am pretty sure Aaron made it so that the disk has to be present to start the game. I will check with Aaron to make sure.

ME is always troublesome. I have ME on my laptop and hate it. Do you have the most recent Version, ie all patches?

I am sure this was tested under ME so the problem is probably local to your system, but I know that doesn't help much. After you try what has been suggested, and if still having problems, then go to our Customer Support Centerand open a ticket. They are really good at this stuff.

Yes, you do need the disk in the drive. Which worries me, because in my CD drive the Starfury disc makes a LOT of noise. It doesn't like certain CDs, and Starfury appears to be one of them. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

EDIT: that and the auto-run tries to install SF every time you put the disc in..

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">That's exactly what's happening to my computer, noise and all. I'll see about opening that ticket Tim Brooks talked about.

Let me make it clear, for me it does work despite the noise. Try burning a copy, for me the copy is quieter.

Yeah, it does seem to require you use the CD. My laptop asks me to put it in when it is not present. The very first time I ran the game, it did not detect the cd but after reinserting it, things worked fine. I use Windows XP Professional.

I do suggest imaging the CD to your hdd and creating a virtual cd drive
I do this alot as my CD drive is slow and sometimes causes my machine to play up

Re: ME Problems?

Well it seems this is not just an ME problem http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

I'm having the same problems as Gregebowman with my 98 system with both CD drives! No matter how many times I reinstall or change the drive nothing else happens. (Just to note Autoplay is off)

So does anybody have any ideas how to solve this or get around it. Please post if you have had the same problem and solved it (or even not http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif ). Hopefully this will be fixed in the patch if it is to difficult to get around.

I can only guess. Do you have a music folder on the hd? Is there one on the CD. Maybe SF tries to play music but cannot for some strange reason. The beta Version has a dedicated music folder on the hd and does not require any CD.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Maybe that could be true, but since I can't get past the install screen, I don't know. Maybe if I got past that point and I was having difficulties, I would think about the music folder. My music folder is part of my Morpheus program, so I think it's called My shared folder, or something like that (I'm at work, so I can't check). Plus, it's making that loud noise, like it's a vacuum cleaner or something like that. Hopefully when I get home and check my e-mail, there'll be something from the support tech people with a possible solution to my problem. If there is and it works, I'll pass it on.

That's what the e-mail I received suggested. But they're still trying to figure it out and will get back to me later. Now I have to download that demo to make sure it does work on my system. Too bad the demo couldn't have been on the disc.
