While we\'re waiting for the demo...

...does anyone want to share any interesting things they've seen in Dom I games?

I myself was playing around earlier on the Ripple map with some AIs and saw some rather heart-warming action from one of my heroes, or should I say heroines: Rhianne volunteered for service at my castle. After outfitting her with a bag of winds I sent her to the Arena Death Match, which she won (mainly because there were no pretenders involved, and because she had a bag of wind). A little later there is another Death Match, so Rhianne dutifully goes along to represent Man, recently equipped with chainmail of displacement, and a ring of regeneration (as well as her trusty bag of wind and of course the champion's trident). The startling part is that she manages to defeat not only a great mother, but also a titan pretender! Not bad for a back-woods girl! Of course her heroic ability was increased defense, which together with her equipment and experience gave her a def of 37 - which is pretty damn good. After this experience she almost died to friendly fire in a minor skirmish with Caelum - down to 2 HP, but came back, ridding herself of that nasty battle fright due to her ring of regeneration. I really must give her some missile protection. A couple of turns later she went on to kill her 3rd god when I overran Caelum's capital, although this wasn't quite so spectacular, since he was an archmage.

Anyone got any stories?

I wasn't aware that regeneration heals afflictions. The manual and my expirience suggest otherwise.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Last merc standing (in SP) - while usually the mercs are prone to flee when they've suffered close to 50% casualties, this wasn't the case this time. I had hired one of the Inquisitor-led mercenary companies and sent them against an independent province, eventually only the leader and a pikeman survived and to my surprise this one stood firm against a dozen or so enemy infantrymen, killed one or two, and made them turn tail and flee. I pledged to myself I would keep this brave merc until I could Gift of Reason him, but alas this never happened.

Mercenary mummy (in MP) - once I tried to resurrect an important mage hero of mine with Ritual of Rebirth, and got an Orion mummy instead. He wasn't listed on the merc roster anymore, didn't ask wages or anything, anyway he was still considered a merc in a way: he still wouldn't give away his items.

The 3 prophets (in MP) - once I managed to enslave 2 enemy prophets (including Etimnu the Wraith Lord, yay! - the other was a Seraphine), I cast Gift of Reason on them later and had them work against their former masters.

First meeting with Bogus (in SP) - you never forget this. I had a 30-40 knights and 200+ longbows nearby when the troll adventurers gave me a visit, and Bogus ate them all without getting a scratch. Awed and shocked I was.

New fresh recruits, ...er, not so fresh - the first time ever I used Master Enslave, and it was in MP. For good measure I even had it cast by 3 different mages (!). At the receiving end was a ~300 army of Ulm, with gobs of Guardians and some BK. Most of them switched sides. But what I hadn't foreseen was the huge supply demand for my now vastly increased army, and I lost most of these excellent troops to disease (while besieging a nearby fortress).

izaqyos: in my experience, commanders equipped with ring of regen. will sometimes get afflictions, but will heal them in the next couple of rounds. I think if you equip someone with a ring of regen AFTER they get an affliction it's too late to do anything about it. But I've definitely seen the former happen, several times.

I think Rhianne heals afflictions naturally, by way of the unicorn she rides, and I think that may also be true of Bernlad. Its been my experience that rings of regeneration do not heal afflictions, whether the affliction was acquired before or after the ring was equipped. Is it possible that the healing behavior you attibuted to the rings was actually due to unicorns? Have you seen it with commanders from nations other than Man?

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">I haven't seen it with Hildegard, who rides a unicorn and is Ulmish. Can't think of anyone else right now... Maybe it is due to unicorns, but in the Bernlad description it attributes his regenerative abilities to his armour, for whatever that's worth.

I think I have seen this effect before with non-unicorn commanders too, but I'm not 100% positive about this. Perhaps one of the devs can speak to this issue?

BTW, since I posted Last Rhianne has managed to kill another 2 gods! She killed a manticore and a prince of death. Now her defense is a shocking 44 - I think she should vie for godhood. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

I mean it's not as though you can take Rhianne off her unicorn and make her ride a plowhorse, making her no longer recover from afflictions. Is there a difference between Bernlad's regenerative abilities and unicorn-riders' healing afflictions?

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">This is very helpful - I didn't know how it worked. So regeneration is a purely preventative measure, whereas unicorn riders heal afflictions.

One more question: how much of a difference does regeneration make when recovering hp in a battle? Do you recover twice as fast, or how much?

You know, all this stuff that is coming out about unicorns is making me wish even more that the Knights of Avalon were able to be built elsewhere than the Forest of Avalon. I mean, they are just cool - the only unicorn knights in the game, so they have an alicorn attack, and heal afflictions (not to mention the highest defense, magic resistance, and action points of any normally recruitable knight [i.e. excluding the Grey Knights] [I'm not counting Marignon's Royal Guard: they don't have lances so they're not knights]). Of course we've been over that already, and it doesn't seem like it's going to change. Oh well.

"One more question: how much of a difference does regeneration make when recovering hp in a battle? Do you recover twice as fast, or how much?"

Hey, I know this one! Units without regeneration do not recover any HPs in battle or between battles in the same turn. Units have different levels of regeneration. 10% of HPs/round seems to be the standard (Wyrms, Werewolves,...). Black Serpents recover 50% per round and Queens of Elemental Water 100%. I suspect, but have not verified, that regeneration from items, spells, and abilities stack.

From what Johan just said I guess that affliction resistance is not related to the level of regeneration. I had wondered about that.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">You are quite correct here. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
There is also "Personal Regeneration" spell whose power (regeneration rate) depends on nature level of wizard - better nature level = better % of HP healed per turn.

Basically the difference between regeneration and healing afflictions is that regeneration helps/works in battle and only in battle (tactical value), while healing afflictions helps/works only after battle (strategic value).

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">I'm unsure there. I think that regenerating beings are always healed between each overland spells if I recall well. (Have to check that again though, e.g cast 3 murdering winters on a sea troll, and check the result).

Hardly unbalanced:

0.25 x 0.1 = 0.025

For a cursed+regenerating critter the chance of affliction goes down to a lowly 2.5% per hit.

If you are riding the edge sooner or later it will happen, but it's far from statistically probable.

I'll agree the knights of the chalice are pretty impressive, especially being sacred and all, but they (unblessed) have a lower def, mr and AP than knights of Avalon, and they don't ride unicorns http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif [now that bless-effects are dependant on pretender starting magic, they may be more, or less effective after being blessed than dom I - in Dom I their attack score in particular while blessed put all other knights to shame]

While not a story, this is illustrative of some of the fun things that can happen in Dominions:

I was playing around in SP with Jotunheim. I designed an "elementalist" Son of Neifel (3 in each elemental magic). You can't take much dominion with this fellow, but what a mage!

Anyway, imagine his glee when one of his worshippers stumbled upon an old ring and dutifully brought it to the magic laboritory. The ring proved to be none other than the Ring of Wizardy, and this was on turn two! (with a luck scale of only +1...)
