AranMP game (renamed)

Greetings all,
I am hearing the MP siren calls, so it's time to launch a new game. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

I am thinking of a medium game with around 6 or so players that could be doable in 1-2 months depending on the speed settings.

If any of the players joining can offer hosting services by TCP/IP we will go with that, otherwise I will host myself by PBEM.

Stuff to agree on, pls reply in the thread with your preferences on each topic:

1) Type of game:
a- Solo: no team victory allowed, your ally today will be your enemy tomorrow
b- 2 player alliance victory allowed
c- Team game, 3 teams of 2 players or 2 teams of 3

I will go with any of the above.

2) Map?

Aran looks the best for this size of game, but open to sugestions.

3) Turn generation

If we can get a host I vote for blitzing the 10 initial turns (asuming that our relative time zones allow it), and then move to a 3 or 5 turns/week schedule, otherwise 5 turns/week for the 10 initial turns and then move on to 3 turns/week.

4) Richness

I'd like a rich game this time, but no biggie.

5) Magic sites
a 40%
b 50%
c 60%

I'd like rich magic also this time, but not big on it either.

6) Random events

I'd say common, because of the current imbalance of the related scale.

7) Strength of indeps

I'd say 5-6

8) Nation assigning.

New players get first choice, just answer stating your preference on a first come-first served basis. Old vets should instead give a 3 nations list in order of preference & we will asign from there.
I have experience with Ermor, Van, R'lyeh & Jotun, I will go with any of those that be left after asigning nations to all other players.

9) Research
Normal or fast?

10) Victory settings
% map control?

Anything else I forgot, just point at it.

Any player joining should be reachable via board mail or e-mail.

I will be travelling Monday->Wednesday next week, so regarding starting time I am restricted to either starting this weekend & halting until Wednesday, or starting any time next week from Wednesday onwards.

Don't forget to password protect your pretenders!

Cheers,
Pepe

1) b) It always ends when The Cold War begins...
2) I'm ok with Aran
3) ok
4) I'm fine with rich setting
5) b)
6) ok
7) I would like indy str of 5
8) I wold like to play either R'lyeh or Ermor
9) Normal
10) 70% map control

Re: AranMP game (renamed)

A chance to lose to humans rather than the AI!

1) any option is fine
2) I like Aran
3) OK, I'm US Central (GMT -6)
4) no opinion
5) 50% seems like a winner
6) common
7) not <4, >7
8) I'll play anything (being an almost complete novice), but would prefer, in order Ctis, Arco, Van, Jotun
9) How much faster is fast, anyway?
10) 66%-70% should make the eventual winner obvious, right?

Go UT! Beat the Aggies. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

8) Nation I want the Ice Angels.
9) Research Normal
10) Victory settings 60% Control is good.

Re: AranMP game (renamed)

I'm interested.

1) I prefer A since the diplomacy will be simpler - just kill everybody else. But if we had a mix of new players and vets, it might cause a small problem.

2) It doesn't matter to me.

3) I prefer the 5 turns/week option. Due to time constraint in real life, I don't want make it too much a burden.

4) Either way is fine. I'll design my nation accordingly.

5) 40% or 50%.

6) Common is good.

7) Either 5 or 6 is reasonable.

8) Ulm, Tien Chi, Man.

9) Normal.

10) % Map control is good.

Saber Cherry November 28th, 2003 10:53 PM

Re: AranMP game (renamed)

1) Type of game: a or b
2) Aran is fine
3) As fast as possible is fine, up to 1/day. 10-turn initial blitz sounds good.
4) I prefer normal richness.
5) I prefer <40% magic sites, but whatever=)
6) Rare events
7) 5-6 is fine
8) Ermor, Atlantis, Pangaea.
9) Normal research
10) 60% map control sounds good.

Wendigo November 28th, 2003 11:58 PM

Re: AranMP game (renamed)

Game closed!

Here we go:

1) There can be only one.
2) Aran
3) Depends on hosting options, more about this to follow
4) Rich game
5) 50%
6) common events
7) indeps st6
8)
-Saber Ermor
-Ywl Ulm
-Sammual Caelum
-T Longhorn C'tis
-Patrik Abysia
-Nerfix R'lyeh

That leaves Van/Jotun for me, will go with Van as I have played a lot of Jotun lately

Start working on those designs.

9) Normal research
10) Control of 74/107 provinces results in victory

Patrik November 29th, 2003 02:01 AM

Re: AranMP game (renamed)

I'd like to play!

1. preferably a), OK with any

2. Aran is OK

3. OK

4. Rich is fine!!

5. 50%

6. common

7. 6-7

8. Abysia, C'tis, Mictlan

9. If rich setting - Normal, otherwise Fast

10. I like VPs better, but no big deal. Also depends on what we decide for no.1

Re: AranMP game (renamed)

S Cherry, Ywl, Sammual & T Longhorn, I will need a working e-mail address to go on.

Pls board mail me with it or e-mail me to gualteiro2 at navegalia.com.

If any of you can provide a server now it's the time to say it, create the game on the previous terms & either post here or mail me with the IP & port.

T Longhorn is at GMT-5. I am at GMT +1 and I guess Patrik & Nerfix are at similar timezones.

If we have players in Asia the only time that might work for a blitz start this Sunday would be around afternoon GMT time (which translates into USA morning & Asia night time). But this might not work with players in further diverging time zones as USA West coast or Australia. Anyway, pls confirm all if Sunday GMT 2:00PM would work for you people.

Cheers,
Pepe

I'd be up for joining if you haven't quite started yet. I have basically no preferences...the previous suggestions sound fine, and I'll take pretty much any race that's left.
As for time zone I'm US central time, so GMT -5 I'd suppose.

If you'll accept me my email is cvernooy@mail.utexas.edu, and if not... This is a pretty late response so I don't mind if you don't want me in or have already started.

Ok, I am back.

Cherry, Nerfix & Sammual, I need your pretender files, & will fire the game as soon as I get them.

Arioch: Sorry, I guess that game closed means just that. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
Being PBEM I want to keep the number of players manageable...next time!

Seeing as we seem to be all in either Euro or America time zones we likely will be able to get some turns in a row either this Saturday/Sunday if I do not screw up juggling all those files...more about this as soon as I settle.

Also, how should the in-game diplomacy proceed? With emails? With game Messages only? Or none at all?

Re: AranMP game (renamed)

I am not going to restart unless all other players unanimously & expressely say so, and this seems unlikely as I have already started receiving the .2h files.

Wendigo December 5th, 2003 06:13 PM

Re: AranMP game (renamed)

Regarding diplomacy I have no big preferences, usually in-game messaging is better for RP (and adds a kind of realistic delay in the comunications), on the other side e-mail obviously makes for a more fluent comunication tho I usually get lazy with it and RP less.

Whatever suits you people better, not going to imposse any strict rules on this as they cannot be enforced anyway.

Turn 2!
Let's see if we can get a few turns this weekend & move past the early game.

Wendigo December 11th, 2003 11:18 AM

Re: AranMP game (renamed)

Turn 6 update:
Got 4 out of 6 .2h files already, hosting as soon as I get R'lyeh's & Ulm's.

On the whole I am pretty satisfied with the speed we are moving at, 1 turn/day is pretty good for PBEM. No particular player seems to be stalling behind, which is also good considering that this type of game requires a long term comitment.

Once we advance further in the game & turns require more time investment we will likely slow down a bit, but let's try to mantain the regularity. If any of you is leaving for some days or has some temporary issue that limits his time (exams,...), just drop me a note or post here so that we are in the known.

I have no trips abroad until mid January, so I believe I can keep the hosting regular for now. You should expect hosting to happen around 7:00 PM my time (GMT+1), which is basically the time I get back home during the week. At weekends I will just host as soon as all files be in.

One possible exception: days 22->29 of the current I am likely to spend at the other side of the country & away from my desktop's. I have installed the game at my laptop & am trying to make it run, got some trouble tho as I am not a tech guy and this thing has no video card to speak of, just the motherBoards' (8 MB, SiS 630/730 or somesuch), so if any of you can offer some pointers to help with this maybe I can make it run & keep the game rolling during Xmas. I am browsing the related threads in the forums for tips for now.

Cheers,
Pepe

Re: AranMP game (renamed)

Turn 13 & moving at an excellent pace, great!

The -x modifier seems to make Dom II run in my laptop and, even if ugly, I can actually watch the replays...so game can go on as far as I am concerned during my trip away.

I will most likely leave on Monday 22 & return on Monday 29, so you should expect some irregular hosting those 2 days. I will do my best to not delay the game anyway.

Once again, if anyone is travelling & going to be unable to play for a number of days just say so.

Cheers,
Pepe

Got it just now.

Ywl had some trouble with spam protection bouncing back some of his files, but what you just reported is something that never happened me before.

Only ways I think that can happen is if the 'user' is wrongly spelt with a correct domain, or if the Messages have been downloaded in another computer & deleted from the server (but this second is ruled out as it's not a shared address).

Hosting in a second.

Being the current dates what they are I have no problem with being flexible regarding hosting, but as a remainder to all: If anyone is going to be away for a while it's a good idea to inform the group (or me so that I can relay the information), so that we do not have 5 other people waiting clueless.

Ouch, that's a lot of time.

Could you afford a turn every 2-3 days? If so I would hold hosting waiting for it NP.

Otherwise I would rather have you look for substitute, as I do not want our players to lose interest in the game and that's what happens when they start to forget what they were doing & what were the plans.
