At least approximately?

there was an answer around here somewhere.. i can't find the topic because i forgot which topic the answer was in.

I remember that defence doesn't help against arrows.. i'd like to see it re-stated anyway.

I'm not sure anyone knows the formula, but if a square is hit there is a roll to see if someone is hit. Only shield defence is used (and perhaps something for fewer sizepoints than 6 in the square, but that might have been in an early dom1 Version).

If size does not count there might be a N/6 chance that the arrow misses, but I'm not certain. Size do matter in some way, but I'm not sure how.

Earlier the Air Shield spell added +6 def, but now Air Shield has been removed from the formula. It is now a percentage instead. Less opaque we hope.

IMHO it's better to leave some things unknown. The Last thing we want is to turn this game into an accountants wet dream. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif

Anyway it could be nice to have (I hope it will be in the original manual/CD I'm waiting for) some detailed explanation to how the combat really works ... I'm an old wargames player and I like to know what happens!

</font><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Much of the code for dom 2 is reused dom 1 code, so it might be up to 6 years ago since the code was programmed. This means that there are not only forumlas that are forgotten but occasionally also features. Furthermore Kristoffer is not a programmer, Johan Karlsson does nearly all of the coding, Johan Karlsson has a highly selective memory and occasionally forgets his own birthdays. So there are plenty of formulas in dom 2 that no one presently knows. Quite frankly you would have to be autistic to know all dom 2 formulas.

As for the effectiveness of shields, the number of units in the square is not really that important to estimate the shield effectiveness as long as you know that there is a basic 10+(2d6) vs 10+(2d6)+(shield def) roll if the missile hits the square.

They are nearly as useful as the game rules themselves, and without them the "strategy" becomes "blind guessing about how it works", plain boring... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">When adding an open ended 2d6 to many of the numbers it introduces enough randomness that you're guessing at the results anyway.

PS - Apologies to Joonie73 for hijacking this thread. I'll bow out now.
