AARs

Hi. I just discovered this game yesterday and I downloaded the demo. Been playing for 24 hours now and my eyes are bleeding. I must say that this could very well be the best fantasy strategy game and perhaps even the best strategy game I have ever played. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif There are so much to do and so many different strategies to try out so I am totally blowned away.

Sadly due to financial lack I will not be able to buy the game until late january. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif The only thing I could think of that could cheer me up would be some AARs (After Action Reports). http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Especially from you guys playing MP games. Atleast some reports on how things are going would make me feel better.

If someone is up to the challenge then I suggest you post it as well on other strategy games OT forums with links to this forum, so that this beauty is discovered by more strategy loving people.

Re: AARs

BuayaDarat: Thanks. That was a beutiful AAR. Damnit now I have to test Dominion 1 as well. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

PDF: Oh you can? Still the 40 turns limit would require a small map with few peoples. I guess I'll wait until I can buy the whole game. Meanwhile I can perfect my strategies with different nations.

Great to hear another person has found this gem of a game.

Cheers

Re: AARs

There was also a series of small, multiplayer games (JTBlitz series)where the winners posted some AARs on usenet. This was the original Dominions as well, but some of the same principles might still apply. Here is a search from Google Groups that list some of the threads that the AARs can be found.

Have fun.

There is an AAR based on Version one of the game. Gameplay is similar. Check it out!

Saarud,
Even with the demo you can join & enjoy any MP game http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif - for 40 turns http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

YAY JENS!

Yes that was one of the ones I remembered. And an excellent example of how a new player can do a better job of docs and walkthrus than any game developers can.

PLEASE Jen, do the same for Dom2. Prefereably (just asking) one of the races and maps that are in the demo.

I would love to but there are a few things that prevent me from doing so in the near future.

 • I have only played 5 turns of the Dom2 demo so far. It looks good but I haven't felt inspired to play more ... yet.
 • I don't have the full game ... yet. I would like to buy it from one of the European Online shops I want to support, e.g. LinuxPusher (not stocked) or TuxGames (Temporarily Sold Out).
 • Other projects are taking way too much of my time. I'm currently running one soccer/football site which need some major changes (team page for a '96 team) and I am helping out with designing another.
 • An AAR takes a lot of time to do. Not only do the turns take a couple of hours each to analyse and write about, but checking for typos and doing general editing is also quite a chore. (I had a bit of proof-reading help from a couple of people: Mr. Parker & Mr. Gram-Hansen). In addition it is not something which one can put off a couple of days. Once you start procrastinating, you're finished.
 • I need to find an appropriate format. I have done the diplomacy aspect in the first AAR, so perhaps a "simple" (and much shorter) turn-by-turn report of a game against the AI would be worth doing. Besides, who would dare play against me knowing how harshly I judge my co-players? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif
As you can see you shouldn't expect me to start another report soonish. However, I appreciate the kind words and will consider my options.

Cheers,
Jens

Re: AARs

I actually started writing an AAR after reading some of Jens' site, even though by in large I don't really know what I'm doing. I started playing the demo about a month ago and ended up buying it.

At any rate I've finished a "log" of sorts all the way up to...turn 1. I have a bit written about my thought process for starting picks. But this is from a Newbie standpoint, so I don't have incredible insights into the best courses of action. Just what I was thinking in creating a pretender, choosing race, etc. Haven't started the game yet though.

If anyone is interested I could post what I have so far.

Re: AARs

If someone will write up an AAR, we will post it in the Featured section of the Shrapnel Website. I think this would be great for Dominions 2 and go along way to helping those new to the title to 'see' what is possible!

Merry Christmas to all!

Re: AARs

A new AAR
-------------

They found a hole in our defenses!
Just at the start of the rains they attacked.
The Matriarch Mother screamed once and then gathered her forces.
Everyone was given a job.
Some moving important resources to safer locations.
Others giving full attack to the invaders.
Luckily we had researched their weakness and had the right equip ready.
Before long they were destroyed.
The breach in our defenses was plugged.
But no one had seen their Queen so we knew they would be back.
Everyone was put on alert to watch for more ants...

ANTS? Oh wait. This is the wrong forum.
I'm sorry. I was writing about my wifes reactions to the rains forcing the ants to find a hole in the wall of our kitchen.
Never mind.
(where is Machaka when you need them?)
