Finding spells by name

This may seem like a silly question, but here goes: How do you find spells by name? Like say "Fireball". How do you find it? Do you have to know what school it is in? As far as I can tell, you have to actually understand the spell BEFORE you can find it. Am I missing something?

Darryl,

You aren't missing anything. The documents as they are currently structured do not easily allow you to look up a spell or item without knowing what school it is in and guessing on the approximate level (or in the case of items how powerful it is).

That's just the way the documentation is. An index would certainly be helpful, or a downloadable document with hypertext links. But this is sort of a niche game at the moment...and it's worth learning. Trust me. It's just necessary to suffer a bit more than usual through the learning curve.

One of the best ways to start going about the process of the 'learning curve' is to start thinking of spells by school. You have access to the spells menu on Pretender Creation and so you can know your early spell strategy by knowing and targeting key spells in key schools. Or trying to maximize the most from certain schools for both pretender and mage spells.

The only thing that makes this harder is knowing what type of mages you will have per race. Sunray's compilation is very nice for this and as soon as I am able; the thematic differences reference.

It would be great if you could list spells by their path requirements instead of by school, or look them up by name or 'effect'. Like show rituals only, etc.

Wow, great site Sunray!

Would you be interested in an Excel spreadsheet that lists all the items that boost magic level (including what they boost, which spheres are needed to make them and which slot they use on a hero)? Also, would you be interested in an Excel spreadsheet that lists the Nation, theme, gold and resource cost of all bless troops (no summons, no independants, no leaders)?

Thanks Sunray! That's just what I need! Just out of curiosity, can you use PHP and MySQL on your webhost? I ask because I'm probably going to import that spreadsheet into a MySQL database and write a simple web interface for it. I'll be running it on a web server I have here, but if you can use PHP you can put it on your web page.

By the way, why is "Bind Pazuzu" crossed out?

I crossed out Pazuzu because the spell was removed from dom1 (I first tried to compare dom2 and dom1).

I totally love Sunraybe's site. It's sites like his and this message board that go a long way toward making up what is not included in the documentation.

Sunray, you used to have a list of the magic sites...I don't see that on your present website...has it been moved? I know that compiling all these lists took a lot of work, and I just hope you know how appreciated it is by the community.

Also, it seems the veterans are very kind to us new players as I think they understand what we go through during our learning curve.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Sorryfor the lack of explanation. MySQL is a database. PHP is a web scripting language that allows dynamic web pages. So the idea would be to import the Excel spreadsheet of spells into a MySQL database and you could look up spells by anything like type, school, how many gems needed, etc.

If your web host supports it, you could post it on your site.
