Time to play
How long does it take people to play a game? I am curious because I have been putting some serious hours in my Last two games and I feel I am slow. (No need for comments from those who think I am mentally slow!) Seriously, my current game at turn 55 probably represents 15 or more hours. Some of the posters here seem to have played most of the races and most of the themes, but I would need years to do all that! I know some folks quit when they are sure they will win, but I do the same.
How much time do you put into the game? Are you balancing this with significant others, jobs or school? Or am I just slower than a sloth with a hangover? |
Re: Time to play
Well, I for one have never finished a game, technically. But then I love the World Map (339 provinces), like to play against 17 impossible AIs, and thus am usually doing something else while the AIs are playing : it takes several minutes per turn ! I figure I put in about 3 hours on week days (remember I can do something else at the same time http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif ) and a lot more on week ends...
In my current (Mictlan) AAR, I'd say I play 5 turns/hour, on average (with the time needed to take notes, occasional screenshot, and the occasional backup of the game folder so I can come back for more screens if I ever want to) |
Re: Time to play
It really depends on a lot of things. The map, how many players/AIs, the nations and strategies involved, luck, etc. The shortest game I've ever had Lasted around an hour. The longest one (not counting PbEM games) Lasted a couple of weeks. Not sure how many hours it actually went though.

Re: Time to play
One thing Im afraid of is that the devs will give in to the solo players abit and pass-up on things like AI improvements in order to gain faster host-processing. PLEASE dont do that.
For one thing, the game is a great PBEM multiplayer game and there are few enough of those. For that type of a game long hosting times are supposed to be not a consideration. But mainly, if hosting speeds up, Im gonna die! Yes these are long games. And yes this is a very addictive game. Im eager to see the next turn often trying to convince myself that Im "just going to glance at it to see if xxxxx worked the way I planned". If this game processes faster then I will starve, or die of dehydration, or exploded bladder. [ January 06, 2004, 18:01: Message edited by: Gandalf Parker ] |

Saxon,
Balancing Wife and Kids is the hardest part for me too, but I find I can usually slip a couple hours a day in if I give up some sleep. Normally I recover the sleep when the new of the game wears off. I'm having a hard time making that work with this one http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif Oh yeah, a lot of people are really familiar with various nations/themes because they played a lot of Dominions I and there's quite a bit that's similar from what I've gathered. ~Aldin ps Lord Hammer, I thought you ex-footballers were supposed to be dumb as bricks http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif |

Re: Time to play
Lord Hammer,
Jumping totally off topic, let me ask you a personal question. Our family has a theory that big people need more sleep. I am six four and sleep more than my shorter mom and dad. My cousin married a former NFL linebacker and he was your size. He also slept all the time, including falling asleep at family parties. We used to dare the little kids to go and draw on his face, but they were all too afraid! Any way, have you noticed the big people you know sleeping more than the small ones? |

Sigh, still trying to figure out who you are, though you may not want anyone to bother with that, heh, it'd be alot easier if you told me what team(s) you played for http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif All that aside I'd be curious to hear from a real live NFL alum what team they favor this season, me? I'm a big Pats fan, though I'd be happy to see the Eagles and McNabb finally make it to the SB (if not win it). More on topic... I find it hard to get in much playing while the family is home, about all I can muster is ~1hour to check in on PBEM stuff and maybe try a few turns or check out a quick start for a new design. |
Re: Time to play
Hey All,
First off out of respect for this forum, and any other i used to frequent, i do not elaborate any on Football or the like. After all, this is a game forum and i come here to escape my aches and pains and my family http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif .I am nobody famous, ever since i played in college they called me "The Hammer", it's even tattooed a few places among other grim abominations http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif . I have NO feelings on the sorry state of the NFL of late...panzies http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif . Anyhow to the sleep question: Yes, i can sleep for 12 hours easy if i've been really active and have no plans for the day. On the other hand, like my son, when i'm awake i'm like a tornado http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif ...go figure. Very intense i guess http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/confused.gif The bigger you are the slower your engine takes to warm up but once it's up there's no stopping it! I love this game, and that is where i play "now" http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif . |
Re: Time to play
Lord Hammer,
Thanks for answering the sleep question and no worries about keeping football where it belongs, on the field. It is interesting what you say about you and your son being tornados, that is just the way my cousin’s husband was. Either all on or all off! I think this may have been mentioned at the divorce… Back to the issue of playing time in Dominions, I sat down Last night and looked at my game. I realized that I was going to win, so I jumped quickly through a couple of turns just to see a few things. There was a Crystal Castle which I wanted to capture, just to see what was inside. I also wanted to see my Siege Golum in action. Then, I sat down and started thinking about what new race I wanted to try out, I was not going to get a lot more out of the old game. Maybe I just need to do this earlier than I used to. As for the new race, time to try the water lovers, it will be a big change. |
Re: Time to play
Saxon,
@your cousin's divorce http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif You slow down a "little" after 40, my ex-wife is also my new wife and the mother of our two kids http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif . I've been working on Ulm as of late, really kicked butt...but...i'm tired of using Earth and Death summons to rule the battlefield so i'm experimenting with the Moloch Fire 10. He's a great Combat pretender but i can't amass a big enough army against C'tis to expand more than a 1/3 of the map http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon8.gif . I win every battle with my Iron Faith Sacred Cavalry and "Lord Hammer" the Moloch but...this game is so addictive! Out of guilt, i suppose http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif , i've been playing more with the kids at night...tackle football in the back yard. Don't worry, i don't play TOO hard http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif .People always say "Wow, for a big guy you sure can move" http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif . |
Re: Time to play
We need a patch to solve the balance issue between Dominions 2 and my wife! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

But I dont think that will work this time. If I got her interested in Dominions I would LOSE! OFTEN! And way too quickly! |
Re: Time to play
I tried the “get the girlfriend interesting in computers” trick and it worked… I ended up playing a lot of multiplayer Diablo as a Paladin, while she was an archer Amazon. That meant I got to wade into the melee and get pounded while she stood back safely and fired arrows into the mix. Even in computer games I get the dirty jobs! Also popular was sneaking up behind me in Half Life with a crowbar… She never did go for single player games, but as I have a LAN at home, the multiplayer option worked out pretty well for us. Shame the relationship didn’t work out as well. The new one is a journalist and thinks computers are for working, so I have to start the enlightenment process all over again.

Computers for working? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif Who would of thought http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif .I hear there are a lot of good paying jobs as a "game" journalist http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif .

My girlfriend is almost as much into computer games as I am (just stretching things a bit), only mostly not the same games. She's owned a PC for almost as long as I have, way before we managed to move in together - now of course we have a LAN, even though we haven't managed to play something together. Pity she's not into wargames or strategy games, though. And I'm the one who works with computers. Just not too much at home. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif |
