Victory Points?

Sorry if this is old, cant find a mention of it here, I was reading the "manual" and it mentions that "victory points" can also spread dominion and that these are good things to have. How does one get victory points? And what kind of metaphore is that -- are they "physical" points on the map (where?) or are they "score" points you get when you achieve something great?
thanks

Re: Victory Points?

They are a 'score' based on different variables though usually the quickest way to get Victory Points is to take Provinces. Also there are specific things or provinces if you take you get a set number of victory points.

Thanks for the reply. I am afraid I am still confused.

1. How do I find out about the current score? How do I know how to get victory points?

2. The manual says victory points spread dominion. From where and how?

3. Which specific things give me what kind of victory points?

Alright. Go create a game. Pick your race and your opponents, then pick a map (Aran for example), you are then presented with map settings options. Second from the bottom there is an option that says "Standard Victory" click on it and you should get a whole pile of options on how you want to set your victory points and by what type (research, provinces, dominion).

What Victory points by Dominion means is: The number of provinces x strength of dominion.

So if the Victory by Dominion is set to 100.

You could have 10 Provinces with 10 Dominion, or 20 Provinces with 5 Dominion, or any way to get to 100.

Is that clear enough?

Yes thanks.

But I am still confused by what the manual says: That owning particular Victory Points spreads dominion like a Temple or a Prophet.

Re: Victory Points?

Actually victory points in this context means, one of the victory conditions which you can select at start. You are allowed to specify the number of victory points on the map and the number of victory points required to win, and wether or not home provinces counts towards victory points. If you play on orania there are a few preset victory point locations. Posessing a province with a victory point in will cause that province to spread dominion like a temple.Victory points are represented by one ore more crowns on the map. Several crowns in a province means that possession of that province will give you the coreesponding number of victory points.

hmmm, while we are on the subject... what is a "standard victory" ? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

I believe the standard victory is eliminating all other pretenders, or Last God standing http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif .

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Does the AI try to acquire/defend VPs?

I ask because if yes, this would be a great way to avoid having to eliminate remnant opposition when you are winning. If no, VP victory conditions should probably be avoided in SP.

Re: Victory Points?

AI doesn't grasp the importance of victory points. You can set victory to a fraction of the total number of provinces, which is probably a better idea to limit the length of SP games.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Excellent. I guess if I set it to something like 75%, there is no real risk of the game ending prematurely, and I still avoid having to mop up. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

All just theory so far, since I wonīt get the game before Saturday. All I can do right now is pre-plan my first game. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Question to Veterans: Does 3 opponents on a 30 province map sound like a reasonable proposition? What maps come with the game, btw?

January 16th, 2004 03:43 AM

Re: Victory Points?

It really depends.

Maps that come with the game:

Aran 107 Provinces, 11 Under water
The Power of the Eye ** Special Victory Map
Time of Blood, Urgaia episode 1 ** Special Victory Map
Brittan 68 Provinces
The Desert Eye 125 Provinces, 17 under water
Flames in the East, Episode 3 ** Special Victory Map
Inland 154 Provinces, 5 Under water
Invaders, Urgaia episode 2 ** Special Victory Map
Oriana 279 Provinces, 20 Under Water
Wars of Orania ** Special Victory Map
The Sundering 61 Provinces, 10 Under water
Reemergence of Urgaia 59 Provinces

Special Victory maps are maps with victory conditions that are only playable with a certain number of people/AI with special sites and victory conditions for a varitety of ways to win.

A good download is the Seven Nation Rumble, World War, and World Map, availiable at IW's site I believe.

No shortage on medium, large and huge maps. Only thing I miss is a really small map to learn the game, and for 2-player deathmatches.

Are the maps easy to make? If yes, could a skilled person make a simple 20-30 province map before Sunday? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Re: Victory Points?

No, this is something I'd like but my GIMPing skills are not up to snuff, I could direct ideas and suggestions of types of provinces by which, but I can't make decent looking (for my own vanity) maps ( I don't really like blurry edges and non-distinct features). I'd like a 35~40 Province map with chokepoints for 2-4 players. If possible make noflying zones too.

The Sundering and Reemergence of Urgaia are pretty small. Even if you start on opposite ends of the map you will usually reach each other by turn 10 or so depending on how you expand.

Try them with 2 opponents and you should get a pretty good newbie game out of them.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Hmmmm; with ~60 provinces, 3 players sounds a bit under -crowded http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif ; I think Iīm gonna try one of those with 6 Ais or so.
