Aran - The land of strife
Looking to start up a game, maybe get started this weekend. I have a p4 2.8 800mhz FSB, 1g RAM, cable modem, control my own firewall, etc. I have a girlfriend who understands my addictions, no kids, and a couple of cats who can sometimes cause problems by getting in some cables:) I mainly run winxp. I am a programmer/dba of 12 years and can troubleshoot alot of problems on the fly. Here are some conditions for anyone who wants to play.
1) You understand that internet gaming is notoriously unreliable and you are a patient person. You absolutly understand that the first try at this my be frought with peril and configuration issues. I understand that if I can't get things to work I can always just put my comp in the DMZ and not even worry about configuring ports. I will also make sure to save every turn, etc. 2) If you agree to play from whatever time to whatever time, you will be there. I am really looking for all the other vampires like myself who like all night gaming sessions. If you have a wife, parent, child, you have informed them of your addictive behaviors and are not going to get torn away by their neurotic whims:) Ok alot of this is just joking around, I understand their are emergencies and real-life things don't jive with computer game addictions. Basically your a mature person who honors your committments, can send an e-mail if theirs some problem so people won't be sitting around for hours waiting on you etc. On the other side your not some maniac whose going to stick your child in the closet with duct tape so they don't disturb your gaming session. 3) You agree to use whatever common messenger/chat client is chosen and have enough computer power to keep it running while the game is running. If you use windows or linux or a sun station, or have all available you will not argue some bias based posistion if the consensus chooses something leaning towards one of these platforms that you don't particularly like. Basically if everyone who wants to play is running windows were probably going to choose MSN or something, if we get all OS's it will most likely be mIRC or jabber or something. 4) If you do run the game in windowed mode and do other things while playing your not going to start downloading some 500mb file and potentially drop out of the game. And if there is some crash you will come clean on whats going on so we can figure out what is causing problems. 5) You have an e-mail address, know how to use e-mail, don't feel weird e-mailing people you don't know in real-life about gaming, and check your e-mail on some type of regular frequency. If you want to play please say so in this thread if I get enough responses I will send out some info and hopefully try to get something together this weekend. Re: Aran - The land of strife
ME me meme! Got ALOT of time on my hands atm and nothing much to spend it on.
Preferably playing Pangea but willing to play others too. |
Re: Aran - The land of strife
I'm a vampire but from your thread I don't think I can commit to that particular playstyle. Also I don't always have an exact # of hours to play per night. And of course between turns I'm usually working on some sort of project or another (Damn Ermor Units Spreadsheet).
Maybe a little less aggressive and more understanding? At least for some others around who arn't as flexible http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif |
Re: Aran - The land of strife
Well, I'm in with Abysia if you dont mind, however there is a limit on how many turns I can do a day. If you are living in america, there would be a time difference of around 9 hours between us which makes it hard to find hours where both players are 1. not sleeping 2. not working
|
Re: Aran - The land of strife
Well, I am interested in theory. Could you, however, give us an idea of what time zone you're in ? I am in France, and my evenings and late nights (when I am free and willing to play) may not match at all with other peoples'...

Re: Aran - The land of strife

Re: Aran - The land of strife
Ok i am going to go ahead and set a time for 9p.m MST GMT-7 tonight Friday, Jan 23rd. I will be updating this thread with people who want to play and nation assignment. I will be putting up IP and port information a little be later in the day probably around 6p.m. my time. BTW i play C'Tis.
I am thinking of starting off with # of Players: 8 Map: Aran Master Password; Enabled. Settings Independants: 7 Special Site Frequency: 45 World Richness: Normal Random Events: Common Score Graphs: Info on Other Nations Disabled Hall of Fame: 10 Research: Standard Victory by Provinces 25 I am open to suggestions on all of this. I will start a list of who is playing which nations once I receive an e-mail from you confirming you have a real e-mail. NOTE: I will probably be doing this quite a bit I think I have found a new addiction Since this is the first time be prepared for some issues, hopefully it will all be really easy but experience has always taught me otherwise. In the e-mail you send me please tell me which OS you use and what if any chat programs you use, I definetly want to have a chat room as well as the game running. |

Quote:
My key key key point in all that rambling is that if there is some problem or issue you can communicate it to the playing group. I have spent hours waiting on people only to have them come back and say they had some problem with family or something and if they could have taken 2 seconds to send an e-mail or chat msg we wouldn't have wasted a ton of quality playing time. Connections just plain die, computers crash, children need IMMEDIATE attention, I understand all of these things and am not some cold-hearted person expecting someone to pray at the altar of the game. Just expecting people to try their best to be considerate. And i definetly understand working on other stuff during turn downtime but that can always cause problems thats why if a problem does happen because your running multiple apps you at least come clean on whats going on so we can fix the problem. And you at least know to not obliterate your bandwith while playing a network game. |
Re: Aran - The land of strife

Re: Aran - The land of strife
Interested in Joining with the intent of conquering the world. I'll go ahead and Take Arco then, as I see it is still searching for a god worthy of it.
|
Re: Aran - The land of strife
I sent Jam3 an email a little while ago requesting Arco... But I will take something else if Arco is your preferred race.

Re: Aran - The land of strife
Is it still possible to join this game? If so I fit the profile perfectly. Single software developer, late-nite person, plenty of free time, Dom2 addict. East Coast U.S.
let me know, thanks Jim R |

Re: Aran - The land of strife
I am pretty much sitting on the dominions chat channel right now.. heres how to join if your not an IRC user. I am installing another machine and loading a new mouse (got the fan mouse today!). I didnt get an e-mail from the guy who wanted to play acro again its jmorton@pnm.com.
goto mirc.com and download 6.12 the install is a standard next next next when you first launch it will bring up the options screen choose IRCnet as the IRC Network and a server appropriate to your geographical location. NOTE: you can always get back here via Tools->Options and its the connect->servers screen hit connect to server and it will connect then bring up a channels list... type in dominions (i don't think its on the main list) and wala your in the dominions chat room |

Re: Aran - The land of strife
How is this going?
I would've joined but my mIRC expired awhile ago, and the two other IRC programs I tried wouldn't work....(Visual IRC kept crashing and Leaf IRC would not finish it's search for channels...) Anyone recommend a good, free IRC program? |
Re: Aran - The land of strife
Hrm. You should be able to download another Version of IRC. If not or if you use any other chat program (AIM, MSN, ICQ, Yahoo, etc)there is Trillian.
http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/ It lumps them all together, so if you have friends/family that use different chat programs you don't have to start up each one for them to talk to them. OR if your GIRLFRIEND must use these programs to talk to her family no matter how much you HATE them it can bundle them up pretty good. Don't blame me though if your wife/girlfriend puts all her little friends/family to talk for hours on your gaming machine or server machine. |
Re: Aran - The land of strife
We had a pretty good gaming session Last night got through about 20 turns. I think we have a pretty vast difference in experience between the players and tonight should continue to be pretty good.
Zen is absolutly right you can pretty much use any client, and trillian is excellent if you know people with alot of varying proprietary clients(MSN, yahoo, AIM, etc). [ January 24, 2004, 17:28: Message edited by: Jam3 ] |
Re: Aran - The land of strife
If the game has started then could you go back to the first post and edit the subject to something like the game name? Seeing "Looking to start up a MP game" is going to be a letdown for some folks. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
