Most Beloved Individual Units?
I'd like to hear which units you guys think are the most fun. Not necessarily the strongest, just the ones you enjoy!
I'll go first: I love the 2nd Tier Illuminated Ones! Because of their piddling magics? Nope. Their ability to lead ghoul guardians? Nope. I love them for their astounding stealth and extremely high ability to cause dissent. I don't know if this has been discussed before, but it seems different units with the Incite Revolt (or whatever) ability do it at different levels of proficiency. These fellows are great at what they do, and their big brother, the Third Tier hero is INCREDIBLE! The enemy will be so busy waiting for the Vampire Count hordes to pounce, he won't realize he's being devoured from within! Runner-Up of the moment either goes to: The not-so-humble High Inquisitor, who between preaching, immolating, and leading troops can do it all for a baragain price or the Disease-infested hero of Tien Chi, who even now is forcing the evacuation of my entire home defense! When I try to move HIM out he just dies and comes back, endangering us all! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif Irritating though that is, he's great for a laugh. I'd love to hear about your favorite units and why. Mark |
Re: Most Beloved Individual Units?
For me its Pangaea's Pans and Pandemoniacs when they are turned into assassins. They both have unique skills as assassins. The Pan for finding maenads every round which test the province to see if that Last kill was also the Last commander (everyone routs and the province is mine), and the Pandemoniacs for casting HellBind which instead of killing the enemy commander it converts him to our side (again a combat follows and if he was the Last commander, we win)

Re: Most Beloved Individual Units?
Maenads and Succubi, led by a Great Mother. Now if I could persuade these independent amazons to take their clothes off, too... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
Other than that the Eater of the Dead makes a really cool pet. |

The humble Longdead Archer. Not terribly expensive to summon, demands no salary, needs no food, never flees, and frequently dooms the targets to imminent death even if they flee off the map. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Re: Most Beloved Individual Units?
At the humble end, the Ulm Crossbowman. What other highly effective range unit wears sufficient armor to stand up to a cavalry charge and only costs 10 gold?
At the higher end, I like nothing better then dropping 2 or 3 soul contracts on commanders at a quiet castle and swooping up a whole army of devils a few turns later. |
Re: Most Beloved Individual Units?
Lava Warriors with Earh 9 blessing. They kill everything in front of them in no time, fatigue and set aflame those who accidentaly survive, get insane stats in high heat, and anything that hits them just makes them angry.
Fire 9 blessing also works great, but they really don't need the extra firepower, and I hate to lose them. Runner up: Knights of the Unholy Sepulchre. Fairly fragile, but to exploit that units actually have to still stand after their initial charge. And with all the blessings you get as Ermor, it's not very likely that they will. Yes, I hate all the wimpy "fay" types of units... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif |
Re: Most Beloved Individual Units?
I'm a fan of high defense units.
Sidhe, battle vestals, serpent dancers...and of course the wonderful shadow vestals. And also Knights of the Unholy Sepulchre with a blessing only ermor could afford like 9water/9fire/9astral or something absurd. It's great to watch them raised to an insane level of power. |
Re: Most Beloved Individual Units?
Lower end, the super-cheap warriors for Mictlan. Not only can they die, they can also throw useless rocks with their slings! Of course, you throw about a hundred of them with a leveled up sun priest with that one spell . . . and there you go, the reason why I like them. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
Higher end, Heliophageses. (Heliophagi?) They just look cool. |
Re: Most Beloved Individual Units?
I really enjoy a lot of units. My elite Cave Drake who leads an elite team around on his flying carpet is a favorite. So is Henrik the indie priest who won the deathmatch tournament, and is now a middleweight melee supercombattant in full black steel plate. Arco priestesses are great to have, especially if you aren't Arco! Succubi are great when they're on your side. Mictlipoctli, before I accidentally burned him to cinders with my demonic heat aura... ooops. Dragons. Blood summons (the one with four arms). Way too many different kinds of units to have a single favorite. Many are beloved though. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Re: Most Beloved Individual Units?
Abysia gets a flying demonbred assassin as a national hero. In one game (trying out the soul contract strategy so lots of construction research) I have him a tartarian chains, boots of quickness and an armor of virtue.
He would make an assassination attempt on enemy commanders, enslave them with the chains, or if that failed, instantly teleport home when he took damage or attacked something bigger than expected 8) I was hoping he would get something useful like protection, attack, defense or hp as a heroic ability but he ended up with battle bellow. Didn't seem like fear works in an assassination attempt so it was pretty useless, oh well. Still entertaining to see Fear (+19) as a character trait. |
