Time to enlighten a newcomer.

Hello everyone, I have posted a few times but not had anything really important to ask, until now that is............

First off I want to say that this game is truly amazing, the depth of races/spells/sites/pretenders/magic items/units really does boggle my mind. Ok now that I have that out of the way on to the meat of my post.

These are the questions I have come up with to help make me a little better player.

1. Does anyone else suffer from the wierd graphical glitch when they host a MP game? My empire banners on the main map turn to letters or wierd litte graphics that look like screenshots of the sky and clouds.

2. How do you determine the upkeep of a unit? Use the Pan Commander of Pangea as the example. I know making one a prophet reduces his upkeep, but just how much is that upkeep for one?

3. Do I get gold income from a province not touching one of my provinces with a Admin value? Or do they have to be touching a province with a fortress/wizard tower.....etc.

4.It seems to me that the panic spell is precision based because it hits in random areas, can that spell affect my own troops?

5. Is the enemy AI supposed to be able to send his god/pretender to the arena deathmatches?

6. How do I make my armies meet invaders in the field when in a castle province? Set them to Patrol province?

Cant think of any more yet but im SURE I will have more.

Thanks
BB

Re: Time to enlighten a newcomer.

1) For me that happens only when I Alt+Tab a lot.
2) Non-sacred: Upkeep=1/15*Price
Sacred: Upkeep=1/30*Price
Summons: Variable, sometimes nothing.
3) IIRC Admin has nothing to do with gold income. Admin takes a percentage of the ressources of the friendly neighbouring provinces (assuming they have no castles) and add it to the ressource rating of your castle province.
4) I think so but I´m not positively sure.
5) Not sure what you´re asking
6)Yes set them to patrol, otherwise they will just hole up in the castle.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Still relatively new, but I think I can help:

2. Upkeep is cost of unit / 15 (or 30 if sacred)
3. Yes, you get the income listed
5. Yes, it can. You can too.
6. Yes, exactly.

I may be wrong, but I hope not.
Best to you

Re: Time to enlighten a newcomer.

Ok, Guess ill expand on them by the numbers so i dont confuse everyone and myself.

1. This graphical glitch happens the first time I create a server then alt-tab out and start my client up and then go back to the server to set it to quick host and go back to the game. Im not alternating back and forth at all after I set up the game.

2. Thanks for the Info, guess I missed that somewhere.

3. Ahh ok I thought it had to do with gold for some reason to, glad it works that way.

4.Ok every time the panic spell cast and the white flashes appear over my guys I just had to cringe. Magic kinda unpredictable in this game but to be honest I think its all this randomness I like, however frustrating it may be sometimes.

5. Ok I guess my gods just been to busy trying to rule the world that I never checked that he could go to the deathmatch arena. Ive seen a prophet arena champion of a friend of mine get so nasty the AI was freaking out and he just impaled about 3 Gods/Pretenders on it to try and kill said prophet.

6. Ok sounds good, guess I cant have reasearchers researching and ready to meet invaders in the field at the same time.

Thanks for the answers,
BB

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Alt-tabbing can cause this to happen. My advice: launch the server, hit Alt-Enter to put it in a window, and then launch the second game normally. Also put that in a window. Now you can switch between the two in the taskbar and not have the graphical corruption.

Window helps the graphic thing.

OR not left-clicking the game to get it back. If you alt-tab out then you shoud right-click and choose "restore" to get back. It seems to do a much better job for some reason.

A province is a large area. In the US think of it as a "county". So defenders are in the castle and patrollers are out in the county.

Regarding Admin value and gold production, I was under the impression (having read it somewhere) that a Fort added (Admin/2)% to the gold income of a province. Is this not the case?

You can also make two shortcuts for your server client and your host client.

In properties set your target as...

"C:\whereveryouinstalled\dominions2\dom2.exe" -window

This will start the game in windowed. You can now resize your play window to make it psuedo fullscreen ;p

No more relics when you alt-tab to read irc or whatever ;p

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">I know this glitch. It's caused reliably anytime you ALT-TAB on some screens: In particular, the multiplayer server screen with the flags, the "pick races to be in your game" screen, sometimes the Dominion scales selection screen, and a few others. Other screens, such as the main game screen, are safe, but these screens frequently produce that sky, clouds, and letters effect.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Well, regardless, it's still a bug which occurs frequently in those specific places, even if there's a workaround. I wonder if any of the devs know what, exactly, causes that?

I see, thanks for the information on how to work around this bug. Ill use the restore command for now, and I totally forgot about windowed mode.

The developers are aware of the issue. I'm not 100% sure but if I am correctly remembering what Johan K said, that particular fault lies in an externally developed library and is thus rather hard for them to work with.

It is likely the developers of that library are aware of the problem and working to fix it themselves, but I don't have any info on that at all, not even half-remembered info. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
