How old are Dom2 players?

Just curious about the demographics of Dominions 2 players...

Interesting that 1 in 6 are in my age group: too old.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">There is no "too old". You're only too old when you declare yourself to be.

Still, I find it interesting that only 6% of replies were "under 20". I'm not that surprised that this game seems to appeal to an older crowd than, say, Warcraft or Counterstrike (for the record: I did play some Warcraft, but never any CS; Dominions 2 is my first ever MP game on the PC), but to find myself in the majority age group (I'm 34) is refreshing.

And I'm still the lone outlier on the chart. I'm old! I'm old and I have a long beard! If you think you have it bad now, it'll only get worse for you.

Fortunately, the same willpower and indifference to physical hardship that allows me to play a 13 hour Marathon out to the point where everyone else folds from exhaustion also allows me to ignore all of the aches and pains of being old. After all, no pain, no gain.

The key here is, when something hurts, to imagine how it could hurt even more. Then it will cease to be bother you at all. If your knees are bothering you, imagine how much more they would bother you if they folded over the wrong way. Hold that image for a bit.

Do your knees still hurt? I didn't think so.

Norfleet's the old one? That Arm Commander picture made me think you were younger. Someone that old that plays real-time strategy and turn-based strategy? You must be (insert positive term in use by youth). I wish I end up like that when I'm old. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Meh. Just because it's real time and requires a slightly faster mouse finger, an old man can't play? Although I primarily prefer strategy games, I play all types. Not to mention in those twitchy games, there's something perversely funny about some young whipper-snapper being fragged by an old geezer like myself. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Youth and vitality is no substitute for age and treachery.

Growing old is what you make of it: You'll come to realize that you're only young once, but you're never too old to be immature. When you're my age, you're too old for people to tell you what you should and should not do!

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Good, good. Now you've made a start. Now that your head hurts instead, try and ponder something that will transfer that pain to someplace else, until you find whatever it is that still hurts to be tolerable.

Me, I ponder until I transfer the pain off to the point where my hair hurts. I'm bald, so this doesn't bother me much.

I was deleted (no harm, no foul Gandalf http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif ) but am determined! The average age of Dom2 players is...(drumroll please)... 31 (31.66 to be weirdly more precise yet not exact)! Now I suppose this is exactly the right place in time to declare my 31-ness. Yes, it's true, I am the average Dom2 player. As such, I shall regularly triumph against the AI... and regularly fail in MP. I shall come up with 'undefeatable strategies' and have them defeated. I will find the best nation and theme (over and over and over again as my tastes change or I become Enchanted with a new magic spell/item). I will put dozens of hours into perfecting a pretender/nation combo - then use something else less powerful just for the fun of it. But mostly, I will enjoy this wonderful forum filled with Dom2 players just like myself http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Good to know. 34 and counting. Married etc. Nice to know that real humans play this game and like it.

Suppose however that the large majority (> 90%) of players is male? Are there more than say 3 female persons who visit this forum?

Bump.

I hope bumping this poll doesn't offend anyone.

I would like to see how the facts have changed, or if they have changed, now that Dominions II has gotten all those new players.

The facts when posting this message were:

Less than 15: 1, 1 %

25-29: 31, 23%
30-34: 33, 25%
35-39: 18, 14%
40-44: 12, 9%
45-49: 4, 3%
50-54: 3, 2%
55-59: 0, 0%
60 or more: 1, 1%

total votes: 133</pre><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Should other "Who/what/where are you" polls be bumped? I quess not, and because of that am ont doing that.

I am surprised how old people play Dom II. I have played a lot of Warcraft, cs, etc. popular games, and in those games I am quite old, but here i really feel myself young.

But the age is only positive thing, no abusive Posts and maybe better MP games I think.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">It shouldn't be a huge surprise. Dominions II has a somewhat oldschool feel to it: It doesn't have those super 3D graphics that every new game MUST have in order to sell. It's not made as a mass market game, and we old people remember the days when games were works of art, and value that artistic integrity: Modern shovelware gaming does not impress us.

Since we're reflecting on past strategy gaming experiences, one can guesstimate my age by what I remember playing "back in the days":

- Fortress of the Witch King
- War of the Lance
- Sword of Aragorn
- Xyphus
- Sword of Fargoal

and of course: Master of Magic!

Endoperez March 17th, 2004 04:30 PM

Re: How old are Dom2 players?

If someone wants to try Master of Magic, it is available from www.the-underdogs.org as abandonware...

For those who don't know about it: Civilization-like interface, great deal of nice spells. Many bugs and many of them exploitable. It was never meant to be played in multiplayer, so the balance was thrown away and designers instead went for good gaming experience...

It has some things Dom-fans won't like, but it has great innovations too! And it is good for a few hours' game that does not need real thought to go into it.

MoM was great!

Oh, and Sword of Fargoal? *lol* Played that... even got down to the fifteenth level a few times...

Bum--bum-ba-bum--bum-bum-bum--ba-bum-ba-bum...

Now, a game I really liked was (is) Mail Order Monsters. Cute little interface and all, and MULE is still one of the best economics games, imho. (I'm only 27... and I like that I can say only) http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Barbarian, (or Death sword) was quite unique game... the feeling in it is great. Pity I have found nothing like it, I liked the controls and all the things you were able to do. I'm not sure about the decapitation, though, as it had so strong impact in the game.

My first foray into computer gaming was *writing* a lunar lander "sim" in Fortran (and later PL/1) on an IBM 360/40 mainframe. Input via punchcards (remember the model 029/129 keypunch machines?) or the ops console, output via greenbar paper on a line printer. Hmmm, framerate was 0.1-0.2 fps ...

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Personally, I'd suggest Djengis Khan or Bandit Kings of China, although they are (slightly) more recent.

Whatever happened to the "Beer and Pretzel" computer strategy games? Games such as "Ports of Call" or "Oil Imperium" where you could bench three or four friends in front of the computer and have fun for an evening? Hot-seat games weren't just hot-seat because of technical limitations - they were a special kind of fun.

Darned it - I'm too young to be nostalgic!

My first pc game experience was probably digger (and I still play it today).
My first real strategy game? Probably The Ancient Art of War by Borderbund (Awesome game, availabe at the Underdogs. The games I played most in the 80's (second half) were probably Digger, Pirates!, Wasteland, Ancient Art of War and Bards Tale 1.
Sigh. Those were the days .... (I could live on a candy bar and a can of coke for two days, needing no sleep and no light, and still geting good grades in school, somehow.)

Tough to recall the first computer game I played. Probably "pong".

I think the first strategy game for a computer I can remember playing was "Empire". I can't even find any references to it on Google, but it was a 4-color title. I don't even remember what I was playing it on - either an early IBM PC or an Apple ][, I would suppose.

Edit - Thanks for the pointer to the-underdogs.org, great site. Empires (the Version I first played) was released in 1978. I probably played it in the early 80s sometime. I have some memories of playing the 16-color Version during college around '88, but everything from that time is more-or-less buried in a beer-soaked haze.
