Getting beloved heroes stomped by giants.

Setting fire to my own mummified general by starting them out in my own devil's heat aura, losing a major battle, an irreplacable commander, and a large amount of undead. (It was classic though - well worth the agony!)

Defending my home castle from Marignon using my pretender, and having my pretender flee with nowhere to retreat to. Game over shortly thereafter.

Trying to make a Natajara supercombattant with multiple swords of quickness, and getting a chest wound that made it so he couldn't fight very long without getting exhausted. Then getting flattened by Tien Chi rolling through with celestial giants and whatnot. Game over shortly thereafter.

Sending my giant trampling Shedu pretender fly over and attack a group of a dozen crossbowmen, and having them bring it down in melee combat with their sidearms.

Having my best men shot in the back by friendly fire from moronic ranged attack AI.

Actually from Dominions I:

Getting other beloved heroes stomped by giants.

Having large amounts of elite Ulmish heavy infantry die trying and failing to kill an enemy naga who had cast Soul Vortex.

Having large amounts of elite Ulmish heavy infantry die to poison gas attacks.

Having large amounts of elite Ulmish heavy infantry and heroic commanders etc get cursed all in one casting of Doom.

Having my best men shot in the back by friendly fire from moronic ranged attack AI.

Having prophet and another expensive priest killed by a moronic AI mage casting Breath of Winter and then all three of them charging the fleeing enemy, bringing them close enough that the BoW killed off the priests.

Getting two nasty afflictions on my Dagon pretender with regen and high defense/protection from a measly spear hit from a Machaka milita.

Dagon pretender dying in the webs of 3 Machaka spiders, but not before racking up another 3 afflictions.

(And the redeeming moment, destroying Machaka's nation without the help of a pretender).

Forgetting to change commander orders and watching them charge into the fray and die, thus routing their troops.

Forgetting to have someone carry my extra gems and watching my mages waste them all casting stupid spells against already defeated enemies.

The list goes on...

Having your immortal pretender Wind Rided out of his/her dominion (and die, of course).

Forgetting tu 'unsneak' part of your army and thus lose a major battle you should have won.

In Dominions 1 (this one is actually kinda funny):

I had recruited an excellent nature-4 Jade Amazon sorceress and loaded her with items, but just at the end of her first battle, she was killed by my own Prince of Death - the battle was already won, and for some reason he decided to cast Drain Life but no enemy was in range, and the poor sorceress bit it. Very in-character for a PoD, though.

Getting hit by a flood the first turn, an earthquake the second and hurricane on the third. Then vinemen invaded, wrecked my fort and killed of both prophet and pretender. Always run Luck 3 after that one.

Wreaking havoc with the best minimanaged band of assassins I ever made only to have them all flattened by T'ien Ch'i madman in a chariot.

Nearly beating R'lyeh when my Ancient Kraken routs after slipping on an invisible turtle, breaking the whole army morale and having the lot of them drowning on shore in their own fortress.

Investing thousands of goldpieces in PD only to have it all smashed by a rampaging scout. Bloody Jotuns!

Beating Ermor by the skin of my teeth only to find out that it was Marignon who cast all those global death spells that's been killing everyone.

Having a single raptor attack my Dagon pretender, clad completely in artifacts, which caused my flanking mages to turn around and let loose a devastating storm of their most powerful spells. A pair of smoking Dagon sized boots left in the crater.

My worst experience would have to be the first time I was using the Amon Hotep helm. As you all know the details and facts about artifacts/items in this game is shallow. Example: Many items you only find are cursed after equipping them because the description doesn't list the facts.

Anyways I decided to test out the artifact on a telestic animation statue in case it gave a surprise horror mark the way boots of the planes did. Which the boots of the planes said NOTHING about. I slide the helm onto one of the statues... no afflications or bad side effects. Then I discovered it can't be removed... again the description says nothing about that. Then I realized the mummification spell doesn't work underwater where this statue is at ! And guess what no description at all on the mummification spell either.

Items have a nice history but lack listing the facts. Being that this is a TBS game hopefully Dominions_3 will provide the facts first and the history/story second.

NT Jedi,
I can certainly sympathize, and I totally agree as to your take on the documents not having some really crucial information.

My worse moment: Taking a rainbow master druid with the C'tis Miasma theme only to find that this druid is diseased the following round and will be every time he is called back into the disease dominion since he's not cold-blooded.

I've shared the experience of having wind ride cast on my immortal pretender bringing him into enemy dominion.

(My answer to the low precision of most fire spells is to take a phoenix with high air and fire.)

Losing about 80 ulm black plate infantry (no crossbows at the time...my mistake) to an attack on Pythium's home province by a hydra trainer and *one* hydra. The morons just followed the hydra all the way to the edge of the combat screen, constantly exposing themselves to the poison cloud.

Figuring out that missile units will fire into a melee that I will almost certainly win, thereby killing more of my own units than of the enemy and that there are no orders I can give which will be guaranteed to keep them from doing this.

I have to admit that I like the fact that you do not know if an item is cursed prior to using. Though there should be a way to scry it. An earth one ritual or something like that, or a show/remove curse spell for items.

Graeme Dice,

I agree with you that the documents do say that it can hurt things that aren't cold-blooded.

However...you pick your pretender before you pick special themes...right? So why would that even be available to a warm-blooded pretender if it's going to hurt him?

My reasoning...which I now know to be faulty...was that surely a pretender's own dominion can't kill or harm him. Of course I was dead wrong, but for a new player that isn't totally stupid reasoning.

I just restarted taking another pretender. No harm. And a valuable lesson learned.

--Rago won't stop summoning lesser horrors... even after a rout!--

Here's the problem I had. Maybe you guys can offer up some suggestions, or at least commiserate. (Also, I'm at work, so please forgive the parts where I forget the names of items.)

I was playing Abyssia (obviously). I took Rago, and equipped him with the "twin spears", one of which allows him to summon lesser horrors. I also equipped him with the "sandals that allow you to teleport around the battlefield", and the "Bracers that reduce/eliminate fatigue". Rago was leading an army, and there were a few other commanders present.

I had this retinue invade an independent territory with a fairly large force. The independent forces routed fairly quickly due in large part to the fact that Rago would teleport all around summoning these horrors. I lost very few units up to this point. Unfortunately, Rago would not stop. I guess the fact that the horrors would turn on my army, caused Rago to get stuck in a loop of summoning. He would summon a horror to counter the previous horror. I lost about 50 units in this manner, and it was only by dumb luck, I suppose, that the battle ever ended.

I am thinking maybe if I remove the bracers next time, he will wear himself out?

You can also use a horde (30+) of eagle warriors with a fire-9 blessing. I think his Saurolich died within a single turn after the hold order wore off.

Plus, if I was sending a vampire queen undead hunting I would pick different equipment than normal. Take one with default Ulm for example. Fire 2, water 2, air 2, death 3. Since it's C'Tis there will be lots of skeletons on the battlefield likely, so don't bother with Soul Vortex for reinvigoration. For items, take a firebrand, lead shield, black steel helmet, elemental armour, messenger boots, reinvigoration belt, and either an antimagic amulet or another whatever else you feel like. Have her cast quickness, mistform, fire shield, phoenix pyre if available, attack rear. There won't be too much chance of the saurolich surviving that by himself.

Of course, this vampire queen is also vulnerable to wind ride, so you might want to swap the lead shield, fire magic, and air magic, for earth 4 and a chacoal shield. Change the script to quickness, earthpower, iron will, invulnerability, attack rear.

</font><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Must I explain every detail? *shakes head in disappointment*.

Arrite, there's a good chance the lightning bolts will miss since I would put him in the back of the field. And if WR makes him go to the middle then there's still a good chance of survival. Ok, that solves the dieing first round problem

Next problem is wither bones. One time it was about 15 mages VS a single vampire queen. Each one was scripted to cast eagle eyes and wither bones. For some damn reason, every single mage missed the vampire. Now remember, the vampire can fly, so the vampire was POINT BLANK to my mages. The vampire attacked the skeletons my mages had summoned and my 15 mages casted wither bones again, each one missing when the damn queen was point blank... So I'm assuming that this will happen again with my pretender and note the undead horde will be very distracting.

Ok, now you say I didn't script any raise skeletons. First of all the spell "Undead Horde" takes 1 gem and summons 12+ effects. With a lvl 8 death mage that should be 16 undead a casting. Now about the scripting. Telling my pretender to "Cast Spells" does the job for me. When you got a lvl 8 pretender with 30 death gems, you seriously don't need to script anything. The AI is damn good about choosing spells when you got lvl 8 alteration and lvl 6 enchantment. (all of the best spells for an undead commander)

Oh yeah, and most air-oriented nations cannot cast wither bones, if any. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

Well if you have all those researched. I'm sure having Astral Fires is no problem. So he'll just cast that, and your poor undead all die.

Boo-hoo. ;P

Or maybe he has a JMC on a guy with an Eye of Precision. They are fairly accurate even across the entire map.

Or maybe, all they do is cast Paralyze with someone with 4+ in Astral, and paralyze you even with 24 MR.

Re: Worst Moments!

Which air nations are those, Caelum with Harab Elders? Pythium who don't even need Lightning? Or Vanheim with Svarts?

And most get at least 1 in Death, all they need to do is cast Dust to Dust and your Saurolich is going to be dying.

Undead are some of the easiest things to kill. All they need is a swarm of spring hawks on you with attack rear as their first orders, and your saurolich goes poof.

But I guess if they can cast Wind Ride they wouldn't even try casting Spring Hawks.

There are plenty of ways to stop getting your pretender wind ride'd but unless the person is a complete moron they will more than likely kill you.

Have you ever seen lots of spring hawks and swarms attacking a lvl 8 death pretender with 30 death gems?

One casting of bone grinding and 70% of all of them die. The spring hawks route while pretty much every single swarm-bug dies, and don't forget I have pulled off 5 bone grindings in a single battle EVEN when my pretender was in melee combat. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon6.gif Oh yeah and sauroliches have a great 17 protection. really helps.

But anyway, if you prepare ahead of time for my pretender, there's a chance you could kill it if you have smart mages... Oh shoot I just remembered -7 dominion makes saurolich have like 10 hitpoints or something.
