So i made a new world map
Now how do i get it to illwinter? Compressed it's 20MB so email isn't really an option.
Here's a preview new world map |
Re: So i made a new world map
Posting an URL will often do it. Sending it to info@ over at the illwinter.com site will also take care of it if they like it.
Doing both, sending an email with an URL address of where they can pick up the file is actually the internet-friendliest method of all. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif |

I can host it, but I don't have a publically-accessible ftp server for you to upload it to me. And it might take me a bit of time to figure out how to grant you specific access rights to the domain I'm borrowing. I'll look into it. Quote:

Btw how does the random map generator figure out the neighbouring provinces? Maybe i could utilize that algorithm. |

Ok this attempt failed. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif
Did a google search for free hosting, found one with 60MB unlimited bandwith, signed up, created virtual server, started upload manager....the maximum size per file is 200kB http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif |

Just curious. If it's for the account, that's cheap. |

Re: So i made a new world map
You may want to look at ReadyHosting.com if you want a cheaper hosting alternative with much more available space (~500mb). (They host the BL23c.com domain I'm borrowing.) If you decide you want to sign up with them, please let me know in advance so that my BF can get the referral benefit that I think they offer to existing clients.

Re: So i made a new world map
Download winrar trial. http://www.rarlab.com/
Install program. Right click the file. Select "add to archive..". Select "Split to volumes, bytes." Type in the max size your e-mail service allows for transfer. Send archive in pieces to Illwinter (might not have winrar though), Gandalf or Arryn. |

Re: So i made a new world map
Have winrar, didn't want to do it that way.
Ah well, Arryn here it comes. |
Re: So i made a new world map
I didnt catch that it was an email size problem. I have had people send me zips and such in pieces for that reason. Then I make it a whole file and give a download link for them to use.
Or if its a need for an ftp account I can do that also [ February 29, 2004, 16:29: Message edited by: Gandalf Parker ] |
Re: So i made a new world map
A ftp account would be cool. I already put it on my student account so the upload should be a matter of a minute.
And i promise tomorrow i find out how to setup a webpage on that account http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif [ February 29, 2004, 16:33: Message edited by: Torvak ] |
Re: So i made a new world map
I bet it would compress well with lossless PNG. Try doing that, then zipping it.
|
Re: So i made a new world map
It's 49.7MB uncompressed.

Okay, tease me. Grrr. heh http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif Just as well. It's probably best if you wait and see if you can u/l to Gandalf so I can grab it from him, or post a temp URL that I can grab it from. It'll be easier than you having to break the file up and then spend however long it takes to email all the pieces ... |
Re: So i made a new world map
BTW, Torvak, that URL in your sig, "http://www.bl23c.com/files.htm" is no longer valid. I restructured the site's directories yesterday while you weren't looking. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
The correct URL is "http://www.bl23c.com/arryn/files.htm". [ February 29, 2004, 18:12: Message edited by: Arryn ] |
Re: So i made a new world map
Ok here we go. Thanks to Gandalf.
Though now that it's out i'm already unhappy with it. Guess i'll make a new Version tomorrow. |

However, there appears to be a problem. Internally, the archive says the compressed size is 21.35mb, but the d/l size from Gandalf was only 12.5mb. Please check to make sure the file wasn't truncated. |
Re: So i made a new world map
Hrmpf. But before you say it. I used binary mode http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

I'll upload it again. Not sure what happened.

I don't think the wrong mode would have truncated the file like that. Well, possibly if it hit the right character combo. But it's likelier to be something else. 12.498mb strikes me as a suspiciously roundish number. |
Re: So i made a new world map
Hmm filesize in my ftp account there is 21 MB but the file Gandalf copied is 12 MB. Maybe he copied it before i was done uploading. Hmm is that even possible?

Ok try this.

Re: So i made a new world map
well I showed that he wasnt connected when I got it but it did show a "brocken connection" for his login. I just figured he had closed the program window rather than log off as many people do.

I've repackaged it as a .zip and am uploading to my site as I type this. It'll be ~30-35 minutes before it's ready (128Kb up is slow). It's too bad it needs to be in .zip format, because the .zip is a full 5Mb larger (26Mb) than the .rar (21Mb) ... [ February 29, 2004, 19:49: Message edited by: Arryn ] |
