A Beginner Marignon AAR: Worth it?

Greetins everybody ! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
This is my first post, even if i'm reading the forums quite a lot after i got my dominions 2 copy a month ago.
I'm still a beginner player and i really appreciated the aar i read so far.
It was my intention to create a marignon aar, since i'm not an expert player it will be adressed to noobs (like me:-P) and it will contain straightful tactics and probably some errors.
I'm pretty sure i'll be able to learn quite a lot from your advices and comments.. so shall i start it?

Please do. I think AAR's are more informative for this game than they are for most.

AAR are always nice, esspecially if they are written good http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif honestly, just do it. THere are like a douzen (14?) races in the game, and most people seem to play the same, so i guess there will never be AARs for each race. I guess Marignon is one of the more often played races, its just the standart race with no real disadvantage. Very good priests, good offense rituals and nice troops, both heavy knights and long range crossbowman, can the average player ask for more ? You even have to choose between 4 themes, so the CotS theme is quite dissapointing and usually not worth choosing because Marignon losses its main power while getting another -minor- advantage imho.

Yes, please write up your AAR. They're great to read and provide loads of insight - both in the comments that the veterans give, and also in the way I get to see how someone *else* would tackle a particular problem.

Personally, I learn a lot from AAR's.

Well, actually, that's not quite right. I learn a lot from reading the discussion and advice that ensues *from* an AAR.

Especially the ones with arguments because then I learn a little more of the 'why' and the thinking people are using.

To Acantoni: please do the AAR. No one's done that nation yet and it's one of the more interesting ones IMO.

Bring it on. Have not personally played with or read much about Marignon.

Thanks for the feedback, in this case i'll start a beginner Marignon aar but first a few Disclaimers :

  • -I'm not native english, there might be some grammar error and since my language ability isn't exceptional i will skip the 'poetic' part of the aar

-As i said i'm not an expert, this work is a description of a game i'm playing.
There are certainly better tactics for Marignon and better approaches.

-In this game i'll use mods i'm not familiar with, so i'm not exactly sure what to expect (fun isn't it? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif )

-In this game i'll also experiment a kind of gameplay i'm not used to.
In fact i'll use a pretender i've never used before.

Any feedback, comment or suggestion (or even constructive critics on my moves!) are welcome! :-)

Re: A Beginner Marignon AAR: Worth it?

MY SETTINGS

I used those mods

Mind Duel Mod
Improved Light Cavalry
Mighty Militia
Alexander's Scale
Unwise's Flags

I'm not familiar with some of them (mind duel and alexander's scale), i read the descriptions and that influenced my later choices

So i created a new god of the Marignons

MARIGNON

In this game i'll experiment a kind of gameplay i'm not so familiar with.
Marignon proves to be a nice choice allowing me to have nice heavy infantry, vry powerful heavy cavalry and crossbowmans.
Marignon Priests are really powerful and they can also produce powerful mage/astral mage
It's a well round nation with lots of good units and no evident weaknesses.

MY PRETENDER

I usually play a rainbow mage for site searching, this time i'll play a Cyclops for forging and combat aswell

Cyclops
Cost 125
Hits 91
Protection 23
Morale 30
Magic Resistance 18
Strenght 28
Attack 11
Defence 11
Move 3/14
Encumbrance 2
Leadership 75

3 earth
5 research
fear
fire resistant (100)

As you can see it's a pretty powerful being in combat.

Re: A Beginner Marignon AAR: Worth it?

Glad to see you are taking up this project. I like reading these AARs to learn the game and get an idea on what things different races can do.

As a follow up to my post yesterday, my game I was planning on doing an AAR for went badly in a hurry http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif . I found myself spending so much time making sure I wrote everything down that I would completely forget to do critical things each turn. A couple turns I didn't recruit any troops even though I had lots of gold, and then I got my only Norna killed by leaving her next to my pretender Son of Niefel on the battlefield (I assume his cold shield killed her that he cast on himself). I had her ferry some troops to the front line and was planning on testing her out in a battle.

Since I am only on my 2nd full game I will play a while and enjoy the game before I try to write an AAR sometime later... most likely a different and new race.

Good luck and I am looking forward to reading.
