Zen\'s Europe map

Zen's Europe map is once again available from my site. The archive contains a .map, a .tga with copyright notice, and a license-rights file.

The direct link is here.

Re: Zen\'s Europe map

Oh? What happened? Did Zen decide to put it up again after all, or was there a new wrinkle in the case of it being yanked from M:TW?

Arryn March 8th, 2004 05:26 AM

Re: Zen\'s Europe map

I thought it was obvious, from my having mentioned the words "copyright notice" and "license-rights file" that he has permission ...

Norfleet March 8th, 2004 07:03 AM

Re: Zen\'s Europe map

Yes, but I normally didn't put that into the realm of possibility, that the makers of M:TW would actually have agreed to such a thing. It is, after all, a thoroughly inconceivable notion in today's world. I figured that what you might have been suggested instead was that one of you had decided to flout the issue entirely, having found some source of immunity.

Norfy,

Sometimes, when you ask reasonable people reasonable questions in a polite manner you get a reasonable reply, and everyone is happy. Sometimes, you don't. While the world in which we live today for the most part leaves much to be desired, and is rapidly deteriorating, goodness has not been completely extinguished. At least not yet. However, I do expect it to disappear in my lifetime at the present trend. So enjoy it when and where you can find it.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">I agree that this still tends to hold true when dealing with people.

Corporations are not people, and no matter how reasonable something may sound, you usually don't get a reasonable outcome.

Good thing ! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
BTW there were some errors/quirks in the original .map file - mainly one Med province was typed as land, and some "small/large" flags weren't "historical".
Did Zen modify it since first "release" ?

By the way, I wanted to thank Zen for this map. It's beautiful (yes, I know you didn't make it, but you've got a good eye http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif ) and it plays very well.

Re: Zen\'s Europe map

The map was adjusted to fit balance concerns as well as make some of the aquatic racial advantage less. So there are some historical innacuracies (also to fit the map geography).

I'll change the .map file for the plains that I missed.

I am going to make a semi-historical scenario for it, but I'm having problems coming up with exactly what type of economy since I've never played M:TW.

Re: Zen\'s Europe map

The maps folder contains only .map and .tga files and the current games have .2h, .trn and a ftherlnd files. My newbie question is this: where do I put the .rar file?

Re: Zen\'s Europe map

Zen,
Eastern Med zone (where Cyprus is located) is "Plains" instead of Sea, that's rather an oversight than a design issue I suppose ...

Re: Zen\'s Europe map

starfighter-

*.rar is an archive file. it can be extracted with the software found here:

http://www.rarlabs.com

Inside is the *.map and *.tga

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Put the .map and .tga files in the Dominions 2 "Maps" folder. They are used to generate a new game, which is stored in ftherlnd file. Then players submit orders .2h files (not to confuse with pretender designs which are also .2h files but in the newlords folder...), and processed turns are .trn files.
Once a game is started the .map file isn't used anymore, only ftherlnd is, but .tga is still needed (to display the map !)

This map is just beautiful. I mean, it's gorgeous. It's quickly become my favorite SP map of the lot and I'm enjoying exploring it very much.

Zen, do you have any tips or pointers on map creation? Some part of me is interested in doing a South America vs. Western Europe map to recreate the real-life Mictlan/Marignon struggles among others.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Well Miguel. My only pointers are probably going to be with anything that you start and know nothing about (like me and Gimp or me and Photoshop) is to be prepared for it to be exceedinly harder than you imagined http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif . Depending on how you want to do it, what programs you have availiable (I have found CC2's Fractal Utility makes good overland maps) and how you want to do it, I'd do your research first then if you have talent and skill (which I have none of) drawing it with a few of the map aids that are out there (Kristoffers' Mapstuff) and mashing it together until it looks good. There are alot more people out there who could tell you better than me, I'm just a middle man http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

If you liked that map then you may enjoy a redone Version of it called "Way too many provinces and a Scenario" that I redid the province lines and am in the process of having them all named properly then will tag them and make the scenario with it. It will also contain a new British map for those who want more brittan.
