F9-F12

Unless I am mistaken, the F9, F10, F11 and F12 keys are not mapped.

What about:

F9: Scrolls through and highlights all commanders with forge bonuses (also forget which blokes have got the hammers?)
F10: Scrolls through and highlights your hiding/sneaking commanders
F11: Scrolls through and highlights each commander set to "preach" (you don't get Messages when their preaching activity is no longer useful, and you don't see them via "n")
F12: Switches between your pretender (if not dead) and Prophet (if you have one/alive)

Would this be worth the effort?

Not sure that I need F9, but the other suggestions of yours sounds very helpful to my ears...!

Agreed. F9 Im not sure of.
And I think I would just use n rather than the one that scrolls thru scouts. I think it would be more useful since it also gets me to mages I had do a search, commanders who need a move order, the new commander I just made. The only thing that irritates me about using "n" is that it stops on every seiging unit.

I like the others though. Maybe F9 would be useful to me if it would show each mage which forged something and remind me of what I had them forge. That would make it easier if I wanted them to make another so I can go to that one.

Re: F9-F12

Ok thank you.

Then I am alone in having problems remembering where my Dwarven Hammers are. Fine.

What about then: Scrolling through your fortresses? (A feature I actually liked from (dont hit me) Warcraft III was the backspace key, which cycled through forts.)

EDIT: actually wanted to know: if other people also feel that these things are useful, and if the devs also feel that this is a good idea -- would it be worth the effort? I know nothing about programming: would this take 10 minutes, 10 hours, or 10 days to do?

I like your idea thinktank, but I like this even more.

This is NOT a dev response so please dont use it as ammunition... but I know something about programming and can take a stab at the difficulty question. If you are looking for a display such as F1 gives then that takes abit of time to design and test.

If you are looking for a cycler such as the "n" key which goes thru each and kicks in the display which is already standard for it.... then that can be much quicker. In fact it would probably involve copying and pasting the n routine, then making changes to the new copy for cycling thru something else.

Besides Im already a cut-n-paste/edit-the-obvious programmer on a MUD game. More than enough to convince me to dodge that bullet.

I usually find them eventually, without a whole lot of trouble, though. Just look for the mages who are defending instead of researching. Although sometimes I give magic boosting items to researchers just for the bonus point of research. Then it gets harder.

Haven't ever had a forge bonus, so I'm also not sure about F9. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif The others seem useful though, and personally I'd definately like to see a way to scroll through fortresses. I mean, sure, all provinces can nominally be used to generate units, but the fortresses are usually the ones you've most interest in recruiting from.

Another thing I'd like to see, is a way to get troops set to 'Defend' out of the commanders being cycled through, as I'll often have specific commanders I want to defend (and not Patrol) a particular province, and it gets irritating cycling through them over and over.

(My reason for preferring Defend vice Patrol - I usually have a fortification there, and I want them inside the fortress if enemies come along, to prevent them from being smashed like bugs by a potent enemy force. IOW, they're supposed to be the welcome party in the fortress, so 'guests' can't just come strolling in.)

I LIKE this idea. It not only answers the original thing about finding dwarven hammers, but many other items. I would also find it helpful to glance at it and say "oh yeah, I did notice something about him picking that up awhile back. Now he is standing with someone who can use it much more." Or "of all my commanders he doesnt have a dragon helm"

I'm thinking of something like the F1 display, but for commanders instead of provinces. Under each commander would be brief details of the units under his/her command, and the items and gems carried. Maybe also the icons (for checking battle afflictions etc. without needing to open up the commander screen), and current hp etc.

Actually, the things you have been mentioning here are exactly the things I wanted to address, however: I felt it would be asking too much. I have the feeling that Illwinter would not have the resources or desire to implement these things. So I was sort of hoping for an easy quick fix which might cover a tiny bit of the "summary" functionality but being easy to do. I just felt that people would throw stones at me if I suggested that such as summary be done because it seems to my (totally computer-untrained) eye as if that would require asympotically high amounts of time.
