D&D Forgotten Realms map?
Ok.. well i have to start tinkering around with a map sometime, so i'm going to try and find a good Forgotten Realms map and work on that. While i doubt i'll ever get a finished product out of it, if i do so much the better, and if i pique somebody elses interest and they do it thats even more fantastic.
I was thinking about dominions and forgotten realms and i realized what a perfect conVersion some of the races are for Forgotten Realms factions... Soul Gate Ermor - The Shades of Netheril The Illithids - ... The Illithids Maztica - Mictlan/ C'tis The Dales - Man Sword Coast/ Waterdeep - Arceseophyle Red mages/ Calimshan - Abysia/ Marignon Forzen North/Icewind Dale - Jotunheim Silver Marches - Vanheim Tuigan Horde - Barbarian King Tien Chi Cormyr - i'd say ulm but they make good dwarves.. what else? |
Re: D&D Forgotten Realms map?
wow... WoTC really keeps a tight lid on their products... i cant find a copy of the new map Online.

Re: D&D Forgotten Realms map?
Hmmm... While I can not find a copy of the new map there's bound to be something usable in the 2nd edition books. However the one I found was of such poor quality that it could not be turned into a working Dominions 2 map. Hopefully you will have better luck than me. Finding an image that's large enough can be a bother though.
You haven't by any chance contacted WotC and asked them nicely? While they are understandably hard on scans, and other material from their products, appearing for free they seem to have a policy of supplying images from their products at a regular basis. Since Faeruns map is already well known they might even have a highresolution image around that you can use. At the very least you'll know what their opinion is on the subject. |
Re: D&D Forgotten Realms map?
Hang on. Might have spoken too soon. Found something you might find useful.
http://apocalypse.thegames.it/faerunMap.htm With a little cutting and pasting this could be stitched and painted into a good Dominions 2 map. |
Re: D&D Forgotten Realms map?
If you like the Dragonlance setting I also found this.

Re: D&D Forgotten Realms map?
I cant seem to access that webpage... (the first one) i had found a 2nd edition map that was detailed and broken into about 12 parts, but i was holding out for the absolutly beutiful 3rd edition map http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Re: D&D Forgotten Realms map?
That's odd. Link works without problem for me.
Try moving up the "tree" to http://apocalypse.thegames.it then select "Mappa dei FR" on the righthand side. Looks like the 3rd edition map, broken into pieces, but then again I'm not really that updated on PnP RPGs these days. I like the dragonlance map better though. All borders already drawn. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif |
Re: D&D Forgotten Realms map?
It might have something to do with me being on a military network right now (me being in the military and at work). Being the impulse buyer that i am and always willing to have an extra digital doodad on my computer i ended up purchasing the fractal mapper from nbos ( http://www.nbos.com/products/mapper/mapper.htm )because it seems like an awesome map creation utility, im lazy, and an rpg'er can never have enough maps. *cough* giving myself a little more credit than i deserve for following through im going to attempt to recreate a forgotten realms map at the proper scale, thus avoiding the over detail present in most of the maps i've seen and avoiding any unneccessary copywright issues. plus the mapper just looks really cool.

Re: D&D Forgotten Realms map?
I might actually try and make an FR map using those 3rd Edition scans, as I love Forgotten Realms, always have, especialy the pre-Godswar one. There's the makings of a more than one scenario out of it if one is so inclined, and being unemployed right now, I've got spare time. If somebody else wants to do a Version as well, go for it. This might take a long time.

Re: D&D Forgotten Realms map?
Of course, if they actually had the complete map of the continent with Kara-Tur also in there, it'd be much better. Anybody have an idea where I could get a Kara-Tur map consistent with the 3rd Edition FR map?
I was never all that keen on Maztica, but it could go as well, but that would be a huge project. Edi |
Re: D&D Forgotten Realms map?
I couldn't find any highresolution maps of Kara-Tur, possibly because it's still very popular and a recent "Trail maps of Kara-Tur" seems to have been produced.
The Maztica setting is however available free for download. It will take a bit of photoshopping to make those maps work for Dominions 2 however. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/downloads |
Re: D&D Forgotten Realms map?
I've got the Faerun map almost ready to start province editing, just need to smooth out the wrinkles from piecing together all those separate map segments and erasing a couple of annoying lines that were produced by the fold marks when it was scanned. I should get that done tomorrow.

Re: D&D Forgotten Realms map?
Never mind the Kara-Tur and Maztica maps, if this one was any bigger, it would be unmanageable. As it is, I'm having trouble getting the map editor to display all the provinces because it seems to hit a limit at around 498 provinces.
I've got some province placement modifications to do, as well as some optimizing, axing unnecessary ones and cleaning up the map in this sense, but it's coming along nicely and it shouldn't take more than a few days. The file is huge, though, at around 20 MB for the uncompressed targa file, so I'm going to need the help of a couple of people to get it Online, as I've only got a dial-up connection. Pipe up if you have hosting space for that much so we can make arrangements. My email is esko.halttunen @luukku.com (white space included to fool search bots). Edi |
Re: D&D Forgotten Realms map?
The maximum map size in Dom2 is 500 provinces.
However, at least as of 2.08, when a single player owned a large number of these provinces, the nation overview display would get cut off. A more practical limit on map size is therefore around 300 provinces. |
Re: D&D Forgotten Realms map?
If it helps I have abit of a talk about map sizes at http://www.dom2minions.com/maps.shtml
Comments appreciated. |
Re: D&D Forgotten Realms map?
Thanks, guys.
I didn't know about the Nation Overview cut-off, so I'll prune the map quite a bit. There are lots of provinces I can combine, some that can be removed and otherwise optimized, so I suppose it'll be around 350 when I'm done. That'll also distribute them a bit more evenly around the map. Gandalf, I took a quick look at your page, and it was quite nice. Well thought out and easy to read without any extra fluff. Me likey. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Edi |
Re: D&D Forgotten Realms map?
All right, update on this map: I've finally got the targa file finished and all the provinces placed. And boy do you gous not want to know just how much of a ***** and a half that job was, getting all of them in place, hunting out all the extra white pixels (Whee, the glaciers were fun - NOT!) and checking that they actually looked good in the map editor too. Turns out there are a grand total of around 427 provinces, maybe a couple less, so expect the map file to be ready in another two weeks or thereabouts.
