Following email recieved from mailing list.
From: Mattia > >> > To: XXX@XXXXXX.net Sent: Friday, January 26, 2001 6:03 PM Subject: se4.exe Hi , friend! Please, please, please, post me the se4.exe file (1.02 Version)! I need it!!! Thanks, matthewsharp@libero.it Matthew Sharp don't send losers like this your file, let them BUY a Version of SEIV, if Aaron doesn't get paid he can't continue to work on SEIV. Don't be responsible for killing a game like this by pirating it. |
Re: Do not send someone se4.exe
I think we should report anyone trying to pirate SEIV.
|
Re: Do not send someone se4.exe
Agreed, pirating SE IV is a low low thing to do. >:

Re: Do not send someone se4.exe
I agree, anyone who pirates the game is a bad word that I cannot say.
|
Re: Do not send someone se4.exe
I Agree as I just lost what I thought was a good friend of mine. He got a cd writer as a gift and for months I have been bragging to him about SV4. He wanted to copy it and says that he is at a lost as to why I said no to him. He is a steady gamer who has been playing for years, yet he does not ,to me want to protect our great hobby.

Re: Do not send someone se4.exe
Hey You guys take this pretty good, the guys on The B-17 2 board really take Pirates and Warez guys to the store http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif. I mean if someone comes with an Excuse like my dog ate the manual then boy you better duck LOL http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif.
Then they have the nerve to tell us we are losers for buying it http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon9.gif |
Re: Do not send someone se4.exe
I just never could understand how those guys think they're right. IMO, how would MM ever justify developing SE4 if they only sold 2 copies of SE3 and everyone else just copied it.
Tell 'em to move to China where pirating is "overlooked". Then MAYBE they would have a little ground to stand on... |
Re: Do not send someone se4.exe
If you look at the game in general with all it's fantastic and changeable features, it's almost infinite possibilities to adjust it very easily to your own taste, the time and effort Aaron spends to make the game all the time better, what " commercial competitors" dare to bring on the market and charge for it, what a fantastic ratio between price and what you get for it:
NOBODY in the world should have a comfortable sleep using an illegal copy of any game or program, but if you would illegally copy this indeed BEST EVER strategic game, ZEUS himself should strike them with lightning. I have never had a better after sales feeling than with this game. ------------------ PERHAPS THIS IS A GOOD DAY TO DIE <Worf facing another critical fight> |
Re: Do not send someone se4.exe
If people were trustworthy, then non-US people could copy their CD for friends, who would then send MM the proper payment, minus the shipping cost. Result: everyone's happy, and global warming is reduced.
But, sadly, most people are not that trustworthy. What a shame. Let us all work to make the world a place where the only law needed is love. Meanwhile, obey the law! Copying software is STEALING! |
Re: Do not send someone se4.exe
I am surprised that MM did not build any type of license number scheme into the program. In Stars! if two people try to use the same license number in the same PBEM game, it trashes their empires. I was also surprised that I could run SEIV without having the CD loaded. They did nothing to try to protect themselves from pirating except make the amount of information needed too big to send via email.

IE 'adding value' in SUITese. It is not a license to steal. We are blessed to be able to watch while Aaron & a bunch of talented midwifes (beta testers and MODders) give birth to the greatest space strategy game the world has ever seen. I am very gratefull that MM has not decided to hurt ALL their paying customers in order to inconvience a few pirates. Miles [This message has been edited by Miles (edited 16 February 2001).] |
Re: Do not send someone se4.exe
If security was implemented we probably wouldn't have so much liberty customizing the game.

Re: Do not send someone se4.exe
...Remember the old PC games from the 80s... Anyone remember "codewheels" and password books? Heh heh... Those were fun: After the game intro you were always like "Hm... Now what's the darn code for a triangle, a square, and another triangle? Ah here we go. Page 36. Okay, and the secret word is "monster"".
A lot of good memories with my Apple and Amiga there. [This message has been edited by abkaiser (edited 16 February 2001).] |

Since I was pretty young, I probably would not have realized that it was even supposed to spell something if it was not for the original Falcon (what a great game) code wheel that had its windows labled as FOXTROT, ALPHA, LIMA, CHARLIE, OSCAR, NOVEMBER. How about the Wasteland 'Paragraph Book' "Enough of this dirty Wasteland duty, I am going to get a job in one of those respectable Bard's Tale games! Stop reading paragraphs you shouldn't be!" I still have the stuff from Ultima 3&4. However, I never liked the long load times or having to lookup something before I could play. Now, I carry my laptop everywhere. Life is good. With a single click I can be playing XCom, CivII, Moo, MOM, or SE4. No floppies, CD's or codewheels. Nothing between me and pure gameplay. Re: Do not send someone se4.exe
Em, I don't think its matters that MM didn't put much effort into security.
Think about it, find a game which isn't available for download off the internet, or hasn't been 'hacked' in some way, a cheat or a serial code generator. Only the very very new games have this privellage, and they soon end up hacked a few months later. So much for security. |
