What do you expect to be in the next patch?

This post is addressed to all players, that can tell about what they expect there to be in the next, or the future patches ...

Devs can read there and I believe this SUMMARY could be useful.
I don't want to do a poll cause there're many options ... perhaps some stated by only 1 person, and that perhaps aren't mentioned in the poll, and others very common.

I'll wrote what I'll expect later since I've first to wrote down on paper a big list http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

What do you expect to be in the next patch?

This is different than the "Wish List" threads? you are asking what people expect to be in the next patch? Man I sure hope that patch is done and packaged. I can picture alot of results from a thread like this, and not too many of them are good. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

I expect a:

"Make the game play exactly as I want it to" button.

That would be really cool and should make a lot of people happy.

I know when I got the "Do what I want" button on my computer at work it made life a lot easier.

Well, I expect that least some infrequently chosen pretender chassis options will go MIA again, like the Skratti and the Great Warlock did, and they may or may not return. I expect at least one horrible game-corruption bug, and probably the addition of something new and more sinister. And there may or may not be some random nerfings based on the whines-du-jour.

Re: What do you expect to be in the next patch?

It seems to be fairly common for another Pretender chassis type to sneak up on us.
It would also not surprise me if there were more information about Oceania to be found in the binary, even if it's not activated yet. 8p
More modding support seems likely.

I expect the next patch to provide holographic projections from the monitor for battles between nations and independents. The holographics images should provide a range of at least 640 colors. A blood and gore disable/enable option also available for the battles.

Finally... this may have to wait for the next patch... but when winning the game the player actually acquires all powers of a god as listed in the manual.

I'm sure there will be other features added too... but this is what I expect.

In fact I missed the meaning of what Zen told.

Re: What do you expect to be in the next patch?

For the non-English speaking, I'll try to clarify.

What happens when any game releases a patch? Not everything is the way everyone wants, no matter how much work or effort or balance is taken into consideration. So in effect there will always be someone who is not satisfied. And those who are not satisfied take the most opportune time to express that unsatisfaction (usually 2-72 Hours after the patch) to have anywhere from a snide remark to a full fledged diatribe about how they were either ignored, the developers don't know the game, didn't have time, etc.

This is true of all games, so it will inevitably happen again and again. Though to be fair I also expect some amount of praise and thanks given to IW for whatever issue/aspect/favorite sombrero they felt was addressed in some way and agree with it in some fashion.

Next patch ? It will be terrible! I still have had not enough time to play and understand the game like it is now ... next patch ? New things to learn ... new balance ... aaargghhh!!!

Half of the suggestions/problems that rise up in that forum are far away from me ... I got the game in decembre and still there are many races and themes I never played ... soem I never met in battle! ...

So the only things I'll really expect in the next patch is some improvement in the modding part to help expert players create great new mods and maps.

It will be great also a (stupid things, not time to waste developer time) name list options ... just the opportunity to have a file (ctis.nm) with a name list from which the computer select the names of leaders for that nation ...

good lucj and good play to all

Re: What do you expect to be in the next patch?

I expect every forumite to be included, from the Norfleet Heavy Infantry (+50 when defending castles :-) to the Stealthy Gandalf unit, which has 1 hp, 1 att, 1 def, a sling and the "Never healing wound" affliction, but which is still useful if you figure it out properly.

Here's my flavour text:

"Tristan is a Pretender. He can't ever become a god, but is very good at pretending he knows what he is talking about. Magic is difficult for him to learn, as he spends too much time playing computer strategy games. His people don't realise he is their pretender, and tend to mill about in confusion waiting for something decent to turn up. He is worried about global warming, his recycling efforts mean your nation can not take Heat 3."

Really cheap shot: I expect master passwords to work from clients.

I also hope that it will be possible to use mods with a text server. In fact, I just generally hope that the text server improves :-)

If not, I will take revenge by coding a Dominions2 clone in eLISP, so we can all play from xEmacs. Come on. I know you are all scared.

Re: What do you expect to be in the next patch?

Having just gotten my copy of the new patch, I want to be the first to congratulate the developers on the excellent work!

I love the way the VQ is a non-issue now. Getting rid of all the other pretenders was a stroke of genius - hardly anybody was using them, and now that everyone has to take the VQ, they can't complain about someone else using them also.

Same goes for the solution to the "Mad Castling" issue. Now that you can't build temples, there isn't as much reason to build castles to protect non-existent temples. Of course, losing your temple on turn 2 with a Luck-3 setting is a little more of a problem now, but it gives an excellent opportunity to excel. "I won a 17 player game with no temples! Ooorah!"

And the updated text mode. Making all the units show up onscreen as upper/lowercase letters, a la Angband? Awesome. Lets imagination take over. And getting rid of the graphics modes means more concentration on gameplay. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Not so sure I like the way Wish was moved to being lvl-3 research though, but at least Arco starts with it as a national spell now, which is cool.

Great work!

Re: What do you expect to be in the next patch?

That is a good idea Esben.

What if the map was altered into more of a board game. Each player could start with a total of 16 pieces. The front 8 could only move forward one space, or diagnal if they can attack.

You would have one main piece that you would lose the game if you lost it. This could be your pretender god.

You would have one SC piece that could move horizontal or diagnal as many squares as you want.

We would have to come up with what the other pieces do. Imagine how fair and balanced this would be, everyone would have an equal chance at victory.

AND... people could still whine about who gets to go first!

Cainehill May 28th, 2004 03:16 PM

Re: What do you expect to be in the next patch?

How about making it so that all units, including the pretender, are immobile? Once you drop, er, place them on the map, they stay there until defeated in battle.

And by battle, I mean to say that when units are surrounded by units of the opposing color, er, nations, they are defeated.

This eliminates complaints about SCs being unbalanced also. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Hey, there were lots of good ideas in there.

Restricting the game to 2 players was cool - that kills kingmaking dead, and that's a good thing.

Getting rid of all maps, except that 64-province one, is also a good way to avoid stupid .map bugs.

Leaving just 6 different units, and removing summons and magics, makes for more realistic gameplay, and balance seems much improved.

I'm not sure why this "Militia" unit (the one you start with 8 of) is only allowed to move to certain provinces, or why you can only move one unit each turn, but the removal of the "simultanous turn" was a logical step, since, with only two players in the game, getting each player to submit his turn quickly won't be as hard anymore.

Overall, I think this gives a much more polished look to the game, and it now has the potential to become a true classic.

Hey, check out the new Pretender for all nations that's in the patch!

"Old Geezer"

"This old geezer has complained for ages about all the things that are wrong with the world, and how much better things would be if only he was God. Finally his fellow villagers have forced him to be a Pretender and try for Godhood. He isn't immortal, he isn't hard to kill, but it seems like he's everywhere - you can't get away from his complaining.

The Old Geezer has no innate magic, but is very versatile (all paths cost 200). If he actually had any magic, people would expect him to do something. However, his complaints are very strong, causing all near him to sicken and want to die."

Apparently NOW has gotten its toes into northern Europe, demanding equality for women and men, and insisting on a male equivalent of the Crone.

I would absolutely love to see a command that allows you to create heroes. I would love to create a nation with completely uninspiring national units and mages but a bunch of good heroes (~10) and see how it fares. In fact i already have a nasty idea in mind when/if they allow you to add heroes.... yes... its been percolating in my brain for some time now, and it revolves completely around heroes... heroes and a wonderful book written by a fellow named Zelazny about another fellow who never claimed to be a god. Then again he never claimed not to be a god. Circumstances being what they were, Neither admission could be of any benefit. Silence, though, could.

Some (even most basic) support for alliancs in MP games, which could be used for temporarely alliances in regular MP games as well as team vs team MP games.

But I guess it is unlikely to happen, since it would probably required significant changes to the code.

Cheezeninja: I guess this is a little off topic..

I would be very interested in seeing Sam and friends appear in a Mod. Although, to me they seem better candidates for Pretenders than for heroes.

I san see Sam as a strong Air and maybe Fire mage, although the “Binder of Demons” role indicates blood magic, that seems out of character.

If you don’t mind my asking, What did you have in mind?

Re: What do you expect to be in the next patch?

To me the demons of that book are most definetly not the demons of dominions. His power revolves around 'electrodirection' which sounds like patent air magic to me http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

He would of course be immortal, as would be Taraka and Yama.

I was actually considering not making them mages at all (since they are all very specialized in their abilities). Instead i would give him a bonus shockwave attack and a built in weapon that lets him thunderstrike. It could be done either way though.

One of the national units would be the Master of Karma (body merchant) who would have the ability to heal afflictions ala arco priestess.

I'd like to see the following unit bugs fixed:

113 Lord Guardian: Unit should have Castle Defense Bonus, right now it doesn't even though the regular guardians do

293 Captain: Unit should be mounted, not infantry. It's infantry despite having the cavalry weapons of Morningstar, Lance and Hoof, and has the foot slot for items.

323 Dwarven Smith: No forge bonus yet, but why? It should have that, methinks

The rest of these are just typos, but:

758 Thing of many Eyes: Name should be “Thing of Many Eyes”

751 Thing that Should not Be: Name should be “Thing That Should Not Be”

Re: What do you expect to be in the next patch?

Perhaps, but the description of the Dwarven Smith is misleading, it gives the impression that there should be a forge bonus, even though my friend told me that it has never had it, which I didn't know. Doesn't mean that if the DS is given a forge bonus it must be as big as Ulm gets. I was thinking more along the lines of 10% or so, which would shave off a gem or two from most items but not enough to make a significant difference. Of course, I forgot to take into account the fact that the DS has native E3, which, as you say, makes it easy enough for Vanheim.

But another improvement that would be really welcome would be the possibility to lock down research bars for the diferent schools, because trying to optimize research for three or four schools at the same time is a real pain in the arse...

A number insertion would be better, since when you've high research you end up with odd numbers to reach the next level ... so if I can put XXX in Alteration and YYY in Blood by digit, it would be far better.
