What to do with astral gems?
So there was a thread a little while ago about effective summons and I offered Ether Warriors, but some diagreed.
The thing is what the heck do people do with their astral gems, especially in the early game ( before turn 30 or so ). I mean I just don't see much use other than ether warriors. There are a few items that are sort of nice: Pendant of Luck, Amulet of Antimagic, Spell Focus ( if you are into that kind of thing ), Banner of the Norther Star ( if you are into that kind of thing ), Starshine Cap, Lucky Coin, Herald Lance ( hmm never made one they look ok ... don't really know though ). I mean what the heck are you supposed to spend these things on? |
Re: What to do with astral gems?
Oh and I just thought about globals. There are many astral globals that are darn good, but they are all high on the tech chart.

Re: What to do with astral gems?
Well, the best real use of Astrals early-to-midgame I've found is Acashic Records. The alternative being to save them for late game: All astral rituals of note tend to be fairly expensive, generally to the point of gross inefficiency compared to other gems: This can be partially understandable if the underlying assumption is that astrals (and fires) are the most readily available gem type for certain reasons popularly considered controversial.

Re: What to do with astral gems?
Well, but 25 astral pearls gets you the search-power of about 20 specific gems (2 of each), all packed into one immediate result for one turn by one astral mage. Otherwise, you could waste 10-20 or more mage-turns having various mages cast or physically move to and search the province, and it would require a great variety of magic powers to do so, rather than just one path, and you still might not find all the sites, and maybe not get around to it for a long time. Not only is that a big savings in mage-time and skill requirements, but the earlier you find a site, the sooner you can use it, and put its uses into effect, which can beget other effects, etc.
Of course, especially with a lowish site frequency, you could also blow 25 pearls and find nothing you want. As for the "what do do with astrals" question... give them to me! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif Astrals are the gem type with the most uses - if you don't have anything in mind to do with them immediately, then either save them for later (like when you get a really good reason to cast a strong Dispel spell), and/or alchemize some of them into gems you don't have yet, and/or gold you need. Given that most nations do not HAVE assorted gems, they will probably have to alchemize, which drives up costs. Furthermore, no remote searches for holy and unholy sites exist. Yes, AR is hardly efficient, especially on already well-searched provinces, but it's definitely a nice clean-sweep spell. It may be wasteful, but it also bears mentioning that astral pearls are currently the most easily available gem type, via conVersion from the otherwise limited in utility water gems through clams. |

Re: What to do with astral gems?
It depends on when and where you cast your AR. On turn 17, on a reasonable size map, in a swamp or wasteland province, AR is always a good bet. Swamps and wastelands have lots of sites, and since you cast it on turn 17 you will likely have many turns of gem income from the newly found sites.
On turn 50, in a plain or farm land province, when you already have good gem income, then AR is probably a waste of gems. Some nice items for astral gems include Ethereal cloak, Crown of command (great for letting your warriors command magical beings), Pendant of Luck (every mage should have one), and some of the others you mentioned. |
Re: What to do with astral gems?
Don't forget saving them up to use for "Abusive" wishes. ( I wish for ... abuse! )
Armor of Virtue takes astral, I think; those lances everyone always wants for going against Ermor; some ... old banged up beer stein with a "Monty Python was Here" scratched on it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif And don't forget to save enough for Christmas, when every new born unit wants a nice Dispel to get get of the Curse of Time and other unpleasant global enchantments that make someone else think they're God or something. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif Honestly, I never thought I'd see someone asking for things to do with Astral Gems. After all - there's always alchemizing into earth to sell for gold, or turning into water gems to make clams to generate .... more astral gems! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif (Seriously though - don't alchemize into earth. It's better to alchemize into nature or some such, because Nature lets you sell Wine Skins to the local drunks.) |
Re: What to do with astral gems?
Just to clarify, if you want to alchemize astral for gold, you should alchemize to fire gems instead of earth gems. Fire gems worth more than Earth gems when converted to gold.

Silly CaineHill...
If you don't like the idea of selling wine (made many a person rich over the years) Of course you could offer to sell the Astral pearls for 10 gold each, which would be more than the 7.5 you would make from a fire gem conVersion. I know I would happily buy them! |
Re: What to do with astral gems?
In solo I would just wait until turn 25 or so and open up the ( much maligned ) ether gates a couple of times.
However that is a long time to wait in a multiplayer game. Death and Blood both get instant gratification in terms of a multitude of summons. Maybe the "problem" ( such that it is ) is not with astral, but rather with the power of death and blood summons compared to the power of the other paths? I don't know if I want to go down that path, honestly! |
Re: What to do with astral gems?
herald lances, luck pendants/shields, AMA, and ether cloaks never go out of style.
saving up for dispels is also good. Acashic records are simple and to the point -no futzing around w/ dozens of mages casting 8 different spells all over the damn place. |
Re: What to do with astral gems?
Well, having astrals for Dispelling is pretty useful http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif

Also luck swords can be quite usefull for some specilized designs. If you are having a lot of astral gems you may also be interested in forging a ring of sorcery and/or ring of wizardy. It's quite expensive even with dwarwen hammers/site bonuses, but sometimes it can be much better than empowering your mages to reach some specific summons/Global enchantements/forging that you really need.
