AAR: Time of the Ice Giants
I've been inspired by Arryn's AAR to write one of my own. Since I have a habit of turning AAR's into novellas, I'm going to use his style of writing to keep my narrative down and keep the game stats involved in the AAR. Otherwise, it will get swallowed in a morass of meidocre writing!
Comments are welcome, but I feel it's important to point out that I'm still a rather inexperienced player. I'm sure many people know more than I do, and may find my choices baffling. The point of this AAR is to entertain, so hopefully you will enjoy it even if my strategic decisions have you scratching your head! So, without further ado...The Time of the Ice Giants!! |
Re: AAR: Time of the Ice Giants
So, we'll start with the Pretender creation. I love this part. So many options to choose from!
Since I love Jotunheim so much, that's who I'll start with. The Jotunheim are a race of ice giants. They are expensive to build, but hell in melee, which I like. I've played a few games. Once with a Bog Mummy, which was pretty neat, and the Son of the Neifel, who was a melee master. I've decided to try a new tactic, and selected a great Blue Dragon. He shall be known as Rhyvinter! First, we'll select our Dominion scale selection. Jotun giants prefer cold, so I'll tip the scale 3 notches into Cold. Then to make up for the slow production I'll tip the scale one notch in our favor. That gives us 530 points to use...not bad. Well stay with the default Iron Woods theme and see how that goes. I usually play Niefelheim, but I want something a little different. I'll bump Dominion Strength to 5, and hope that our people spread the word of Rhyvinters greatness with zeal. Time will tell. We'll leave the castle as a Watchtower, allowing us to build more of them quickly. I plan on attacking the whole game, so I'm not too worried about defense. For magic, I'm going to try to go one color. The Blue Dragon starts out with 2 Water, so I'll go for the 9 and take the Quickness blessing for my blessed troops. That should make a difference on the battlefield! Now, I've got 236 points left, but it's going to cost me 80 to buy a new path, so I have to make it count. I'll go 4 Earth, because I think it's a cool path. I'll take my remaining 80 points and bump my dominion up to 7! Take that, baddies! Thus is born Rhyvinter, Prince of the Oceans, Prince of All Water Sources, Lord of Niefel, the Narrow Face!! Let the enemies of Jotunheim tremble at his approach!! Speaking of enemies, I've got to set up the game. We'll add Ermor to the mix, Machaka, R'lyeth, Pangea, Man, Pythium, Caelum, and Mictlan. Yikes! I'll play on good old Aran! And we're ready to begin! |
Re: AAR: Time of the Ice Giants

Turn 1
Spring, Year 1
In the early days, the Jotun were led by a powerful Blue Dragon. Years of struggle between the tribes of the giants had ended when Rhyvinter the ancient Blue slew his rivals during a huge battle at The Dagger of Rinheim. With no one to contest his rule, Rhyvinter joined all of the Jotun tribes into a powerful nation. Once his reign was secure, he turned his attention to the lands beyond… Treasury: 400 Income: 150 Provinces: 1 Initial Forces: Farbaute the Jotun Herse, commanding 8 Jotun Axemen Fjollvinter the Jotun Scout Rhyvinter the Pretender God I see that the mercenary company The Black Fists are available for 150 gold. At this stage, mercenaries are invaluable to my forces, so I shell out the gold for them. Since we know nothing about the forces in the lands surrounding Jotunheim, I decide not to attack anything this turn. There are seven provinces adjacent to the capitol, so next turn we should have our pick. Rhyvinter will research Evocation, so that we can get some good combat spells. I recruit 1 Jotun Gode, a very powerful priest, with plans to make him Rhyvinter’s prophet. We also recruit 1 Jotun Spearman and 1 Jotun Militia. I send Fjollvinter to one of the adjacent provinces. Re: AAR: Time of the Ice Giants

Turn 2
Late Spring, Year 1
As was fortold, the armies of the other nations rose up as well. Word quickly spread through the land that Askator, Pretender God of Ermor, Warrior Against the Sky, Sky of all the People, Prince of Famine had named Boneater, a Wraith Centurion, as his Prophet. Rhyvinter was unconcerned. The enemies of Jotun could prepare however they wished. In the end, they would all fall… Treasury: 271 Income: 150 (+0) Provinces: 1 Blackfist joined with Pythium, taking our gold with him. Having him would have helped at this stage of the game, but it can’t be helped. Visbur the Jotun Gode has joined our forces. He should be able to maximize the benefit of our blessed troops. We’ll make him the Prophet before we send him out with the armies. So instead, I believe that Rhyvinter will go out alone to one province, while Farbaute goes after another. Farbaute will be facing about 10 militias and heavy infanty, and Rhyvinter will take on 10 militas, along with the Scout Fjollvinter. Recruitment: 1 Vaetti Hag, to research spells and create magic items. 1 Jotun Spearman 1 Jotun Hirdman 1 Jotun Woodsman [ June 19, 2004, 16:12: Message edited by: sachmo ] |
Re: AAR: Time of the Ice Giants

Turn 3
Early Summer, Year 1
In the Forest of Gun, the enemy formed their lines, around two hundred men in all. Across the field from them stood two men. One appeared as an old man dressed in robes of frost, and the other was a worn looking Jotun scout. The commanders of the local forces laughed when they saw what was arrayed against them, and ordered their forces to march out and slaughter the hapless foes. Just as they cleared the trees, the old man in the robes of frost cast a spell. Hundreds of rock and stones flew up from the earth, came together in a large cloud before the wizard, and hurled themselves with tremendous force against the advancing soldiers. Some fell, and the lines paused, but quickly regained confidence. The commanders began yelling at their men to close the distance more quickly, embarrassed at the light losses they had already suffered at the hands of the two from Jotun. Another could of stones flew at the soldiers, killing a few more. The soldiers increased their pace, and were now getting very close to the old man and the scout. Suddenly, the old man bent over as if to touch the ground with his face. To the amazement of the soldiers, he began to change before their eyes. His entire body seemed to expand in all directions at one, and in an instant, where and old man had once stood there now stood a great Blue Dragon. The soldiers stopped their advance as stared in horror as the thing spread it’s great wings and bellowed in rage. One of the commanders stepped out from the ranks of soldiers and tried to rally the troops. The dragon rose into the air and bore down on him. The commander screamed a war cry, and this helped to stiffen the resolve of his men. They charged the dragon even as it swooped down to claw great numbers of them. Most of the weapons used against Rhyvinter bounced harmlessly off of his great hide, but as chance would have it, the commander who was the first to be hit by his great claw had thrown his spear, which flew with uncanny precision through the air and slammed into one of the dragon’s great eyes. He thrashed about in pain and anger until the missile dislodged itself, but the damage had been done. His eye was ruined. Maddened by pain, Rhyvinter threw himself against the soldiers, his icy breath freezing mobs of soldiers in an instant, his mouth and claws ripping flesh from bone. In moments, it was over. The few remaining soldiers fled the field, melting into the countryside. Rhyvinter and Fjollvinter made a bandage for his ruined eye, and then set out for the village. It was time for the heathens of this land to gaze upon their new master… Treasury: 240 Income: 150 (+0) Provinces: 2 Rhyvinter and Fjollvinter won their battle against the independent land of Forest of Gun. The battle was costly, as Rhyvinter lost an eye, which lowers his Attack by 2, his Defense by 2, and his Precision by 3! Now it will be harder for him to hit with ranged spells. Bah. Lesson learned, I suppose. Not much to be done about it now. Farbaute attacked the province of Worskin. Our forces took no losses, but they retreated before the battle was won. I’ll have to remember to bring a Gode along with my Herse, to bolster morals. What a waste. He did gain a heroic endurance, however. Farbaute and Visbur are going back to Worskin to try to finish the province. Jord the Vietti Hag was recruited. She will research for now. Rhyvinter will head back to Jotunheim. No sense getting him hurt further. Recruitment: 1 Jotun Jarl 1 Jotun Hirdman Taxes in the Forest of Gun are reduced to zero to bring unrest down. [ June 19, 2004, 16:10: Message edited by: sachmo ] |
Re: AAR: Time of the Ice Giants

Turn 4
Summer, Year 1
Visbur invoked the power of Rhyvinter, and the holy troops felt as if they could move with the speed of a mighty river. Farbaute ran out in front of the Jotun lines, taunting the defenders of Worskin. Their undisciplined troops could not hold, and they ran down the hill to meet the giants, ignoring the screams of the priest commanding them to hold their positions. It was their undoing. As Farbaute turned to face them, they could feel the power radiating from him, and watched in awe as he moved with uncanny speed, cutting them down by the dozens. Inspired by the heroics of their commander, the Jotun soldiers charged to meet the independents, and quickly surrounded them. Spears and axes stabbed into the soldier’s lines, cutting men down. The slaughter was complete. Not a single Worskin defender remained. The few villagers who had watched the fight from the woods beyond the field were awed by the power of the Jotun, and the power of Rhyvinter… Treasury: 225 Income: 196 (+46) Provinces: 3 All unrest in the Forest of Gun was quelled. Taxes were raised back to 100%, raising the total income of Jotun lands to 240. The unrest in Worshin was relatively low at 13, so the tax will be reduced to 70. Also, in Worshin is an arena, which contributes 15 gold per turn to our cause. Our Jotun Jarl has been recruited, and we’ll name him Godzilla Blitz! YAY! GB will take on a small force and move against some of the weaker provinces surrounding the capitol. His first target will be Temigila, a province held by a small force of archers. Rhyvinter will research this turn. Farbaute and Visbur will move against the Farseer Mountains. A small force of light infantry hold this province. Recruitment: 1 Jotun Scout 1 Jotun Hirdman |
Re: AAR: Time of the Ice Giants
Thanks for writing this, I enjoy reading AARs. Since I'm a very poor player, it helps me to learn strategy. One of the hardest parts of the game for me is learning what spells to research and how to use them effectively. Could you let us know what path(s) you're researching and you're reason for doing so? Also, what AI levels are you using? Thanks!

Another note...if anyone would like to see their name in the story, speak up and I'll see if I have a commander who can wear your name with honor. Or garrison with honor. Or research. I think you see my point. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Re: AAR: Time of the Ice Giants
It'll be interesting to see how a bless strategy with Jotun Woodsmen go. Personally, I think they're incredibly poor sacred units, up (or would it be down?) there with serpent dancers.

Re: AAR: Time of the Ice Giants
Woodsmen can be good units with the right choice of blessing, but the primary obstacle to playing them as a bless strategy is that they are capitol-only. As such, your ability to deploy them in appreciable quantity can be somewhat hampered. Fortunately, at least their resource cost is relatively low.

Re: AAR: Time of the Ice Giants

Turn 5
Late Summer, Year 1
Word had spread throughout the villages of the Forest of Gun of the power and magnificence of Rhyvinter. More and more villagers began to appear in at the daily devotions to his glory. When the late summer tax was collected, every man brought a little extra for the cause, and resulted in one hundred extra gold being collected. The gold would go a long way to helping the armies of Jotunheim spread their might throughout the land… Treasury: 443 Income: 260 (+64) Provinces: 5 Rhyvinter completed research in the field of Evocation. This would allow him to cast Slime and Cold Bolt in combat. Research continued in Enchantment and was started in Conjuration. At Temigila, Godzilla Blitz and his small force crushed a mixed force of heavy infantry and militia backed by a handful of archers. They suffered no casualties. The Farseer Mountains also saw a battle, also. Visbur and Farbaute attacked a small force of about one hundred light infantry and archers on a field before the main pass into the mountains. The blessings of Rhyvinter granted extraordinary speed to the sacred units, and they quickly flanked the light infantry, slaughtering the archers wholesale. When the main force of giants charged the infantries line, the humans found themselves surrounded. They fought bravely, but the outcome was never in doubt. The Farseer Mountains were now under the dominion of the Jotun. Both new provinces reduced taxes to 20% to quell the unrest there. The new Jotun scout Horvan was sent north to scout the unknown lands in that direction. Godzilla Blitz the Jarl was ordered to attack the province of Arn, north of Jotunheim. Visbur and Farbaute were also to attack north, into the Forest of Gila. It was said to be a land of death, but it was also said that fate would smile on those who survived there. 50 gold was spent to entice Dagan, the mercenary sage, to join the Jotun cause. A Gygja was recruited in Jotunheim, as was a Woodsman and two Spearmen. A human scout was recruited in Temigila. In Temigila, Forest of Gun, and Worshin, the air began to turn colder. The dominion of the Jotun pretender god was spreading. |
Re: AAR: Time of the Ice Giants

Turn 6
Early Fall, Year 1
In Ard, a legend was born. The Jode Godzilla Blitz led his small force of giant giants against two hundred local militia and heavy infantry. On the open field the two forces squared off. The giants were not expecting such a large force, and they were outnumbered by more than ten to one. Some of the giants began to panic, but Godzilla Blitz would not be swayed. He pulled off his tunic from beneath his great chain hauberk. The tunic bore the symbol of Rhyvinter. He said a prayer over it, and tied it to the end of a tall spear. He then held the spear with the tunic tied to it high over his head. “Behold the banner of Jotun! Look upon this banner and let the power of Rhyvinter fill you with courage! Do not fear these men!” he shouted as he waved the banner back and forth. His men were sparked to action. They charged the line of militia, bellowing war cries as they came. The militia broke and ran, leaving the commanders and few heavy infantry to fight for their lives. It was over when the giants reached them. After this battle, the name of Godzilla Blitz spread throughout the Jotun lands. His banner would be a symbol for the might and bravery of the Jotunheim. Treasury: 223 Income: 292 (+32) Provinces: 7 The Forest of Gila and the province of Ard fell to Jotun. The taxes were lowered to help restore order in the newly captured lands. In Ard, the villagers reported having seen the armies of Man in the neighboring province of Ermithia. Godzilla Blitz quickly sent word to Rhyvinter of this development. Fomiraghist the scout was ordered into the province to gather information. Godzilla Blitz was ordered to return to Jotunheim to gather more forces to face Man. Dagan, the Mercenary Sage, joined the Jotun cause for a period of three months. He joined Rhyvinter and Jord in researching spells in Jotunheim. Kingfc22, the Gygja was recruited in Jotunheim. Rhyvinter immediately ordered him and Jord to summon undead troops that Kingfc22 would lead into battle. The research in Enchantment was completed. Research continued in Conjuration and began in Thaumaturgy. Farbaute and Visbur moved toward Pholothras, a hot, dry province neighboring the forest of Gila. Ard and Temigila spent a good amount of gold increasing their defenses. These two provinces bordered the lands of Man, and so would be the first line of defense against them. Another scout was recruited in Temigila. Two Jotun Spearmen were recruited in Jotunheim. |

Re: AAR: Time of the Ice Giants

Turn 7
Fall, Year 1
It was the fall of the first year when the picture became clear for Jotunheim. Word spread that the forestfolk of Pangaea were expanding their kingdom in the northeast, and Dershid was the latest province to fall to them. This province was only two removed from Jotun lands. Horvan the scout had witnessed the province of Lettia fall to the forces of Men, forming a buffer between the Jotun and Pangaea, but this would probably not Last for too long. Eventually, Jotun and Pangaea would fight. When Visbur and Farbaute conquered the province of Inarime, they discovered that it was adjacent to the capitol of Mictlan. Nothing else was known about their lands, but they were definitely a threat to the power of Rhyvinter. Finally, in the southeast, rumors could be heard everywhere of the advance of the undead hordes of Ermor. This news more than anything else made Rhyvinter uneasy. Ermor was a blight on the land and would have to be destroyed before they grew to powerful, but they were also far away from Jotun lands. Rhyvinter took all of the information given to him by his followers and retreated into his inner sanctum, where he would decide what course of action they would take to confront these new threats. Treasury: 249 Income: 322 (+32) Provinces: 8 Research in Conjuration was completed. Research began in Construction and Alteration. Jord and Kingfc22 both cast Reanimation. Kingfc22 was now in command of 13 Longdead giants and 7 Longdead. He was now a force to be reckoned with. Ryleth named a Traitor Prince as Prophet. Now we want to kill him!! Horvan witnessed Man battling the independents in the province of Lettia. Mostly spearmen and some tower guards were seen. If Man didn’t have stronger forces, it would be a pretty easy conquest for the giants. All of the unrest was quelled in the Farseer Mountains, Ard, and the Forest of Gila. All of their tax rates were returned to 100%. Visbur and Farbaute recruited about 50 local villagers to guard the newly captured province of Inarime against any possible move by Mictlan. They attacked to province south of Inarime which seemed to be defended by local militia only. Godzilla Blitz, now reinforced with 4 spearmen, 1 hirdman, and 1 woodsman, attacked into the province of The Second Forest. Kingfc22 attacked the Forest of Idun. Rhyvinter moved into the Farseer Mountains. For his magic to be at it’s most effective, a source of Earth gems would have to be uncovered somewhere in Jotun territory, and he was the only mage capable of finding this source. 155 gold was offered to Rexor to convince him and his mercenary Barbarians to fight for Jotun. |

Re: AAR: Time of the Ice Giants

Turn 8
Late Fall, Year 1
The birdman of Caelum entered the hall without a hint of reverance. Rhyvinter remained in human form, not wishing to scare the puny creature. “Hail, birdman of Caelum. I am Rhyvinter, Lord of the Jotun.” The birdman gave the pretender god a shallow bow. “I was sent here by Keresaokhshan, Lord of the Shadows, Prince of Corruption, and heir to the throne of the One God!” Rhyvinter hid a smile. How easily impressed the Caelum must be to worship a fool such as this! “My mission is simple. I am to deliver this message and await your reply.” The birdman reached into his belt pouch and withdrew a wooden scroll case. He handed it to one of the acolytes. The acolyte quickly scanned it for magical traps and hidden devices. Finding none, he passed it on to Rhyvinter. Rhyvinter casually opened the case and withdrew the paper inside. As he read over it, his eyes narrowed. “It simply says that Caelum and Jotunheim are now at war,” Rhyvinter said loudly for all in the hall to hear. A few of the templars drew their longswords and axes, prepared to rend their newfound enemy limb from limb. Rhyvinter held up his hand, and instantly they stopped. He looked down at the birdman. “I do not understand what game your ‘god’ is playing, but he would be wise to realize that it is a dangerous one. We have no border in common with your people, and we have had no contact until you appeared at our frontier. Nevertheless, Keresaokhshan wishes war with us. We will oblige him. Since you are here on our oath, you will be allowed to leave here with your head.” The birdman visibly relaxed. He had no idea of the plans his god had for these giants, and upon hearing of the declaration of war, had seriously doubted his chances of escaping with his life. “You may leave, messanger, but I beg you to take a message back to your ruler. Tell him…,” Rhyvinter grinned maliciously, “tell him that we will see him soon.” Treasury: 344 Income: 392 (+70) Provinces: 11 Research in Thaumaturgy was completed. Research continued in Construction. While marching on the province of Pholothras, a group of assassins was able to penetrate the guard around the camp of Visbur the Prophet. One of them launched an arrow at the prophet, striking him in the heart. The guards slaughtered the men, but the damage had been done. It was a near thing, but the prophet survived the attack. The wound was grevious, however, and would never heal completely. Rexor’s barbarians joined the Jotun cause. They would be put to immediate use in conquering independent provinces. Farbaute and Visbur conquered Pholothras. 140 light infantry and cavalry were killed for the loss of one Jotun Woodsman. This province had training facilities for light and heavy cavalry, as well as a Library where Sages studied. Godzilla Blitz and his troop captured the Second Forest without loss. 200 independants lost their lives before the province surrendered. Kingfc22 and his undead horde were able to conquer The Forest of Idun. Losses were relatively light, with four longdead being destroyed. The entire enemy force was wiped out. The taxes in the three new provinces were lowered dramatically to discourage unrest. Inarmie’s tax rate was raised to 90%. There was still a small amount of unrest in the province. Godzilla Blitz moved back to Temiglia. Once there, he and his troops would construct a temple for Rhyvinter. Visbur began to build a temple in Pholothras. Farbaute took up a patrol, watching for any sign of movement from the Mictlan. The Mictlan had conquered another province; this time the province directly to the south of their capitol. This move left their fortress dangerously low on defenders, but Jotun was not in a position to take advantage of this situation…yet. Rexor and his rabble were ordered to conquer Halemyre for Jotun. It was defended by a medium sized force of infantry, but they should prove no match for the barbarians. In Jotunheim, the following forces were recruited: 1 Vaetti Hag 1 Jotun Spearman In the Second Forest: 1 Scout The defense of Inarime was raised to 4. Re: AAR: Time of the Ice Giants

Turn 9
Early Winter, Year 1
Rhyvinter flew over the Farseer Mountains, letting the magic guide him. For a score of days he flew, into canyons and around tall spires, searching for the power that was guiding him. Finally, he came to a hollow cave in a mountain that seemed to be turned on its side. Only the most powerful magic could turn the land in this way, and Rhyvinter could feel it. The cave radiated power, and inside, he could her the howl of winter wolves… Treasury: 350 Income: 419 (+27) Provinces: 12 Rhyvinter discovered Mount Frost in the Farseer Mountains. It produces 2 water gems per turn, and a water mage can recruit winter wolves here. Dargan the Sage left the service of the Jotun, but not before he was able to assist in the research of Construction. The first level of this path was attained, allowing more powerful magic items to be produced. Danfozar witnessed Man attack the independent province of Ireme. Their armies of Axemen and Spearmen were more than a match for the undisciplined rabble of the province defense, but the armies of Jotun would make short work of them when the battle came. Mictlan was able to take another province, this time The Great Feral. Their army of 700 warriors swept of the local defenses like a tide. Again, these forces would not be much of a match for the giants. Rexor and his mercenary army of barbarians terrorized and conquered the province of Halemyre for Jotunheim. He was ordered to immediately attack into the Old Man Mountains, which were defended by a formidable force of heavy infantry and militia. Visbur finished construction of a temple in Pholothras. With the temple spreading the word of Rhyvinter in the lands so close to the capitol of Mictlan, the prophet would be able to counteract the power of the followers of Nobb, their leader. Visbur began to preach the word of Rhyvinter to help supplement the power generated by the temple. Rhyvinter set out for Pholothras to prepare for the attack on Mictlan. In Jotunheim, the following units were recruited: 1 Jotun Herse 2 Jotun Spearmen The remaining gold in the treasury was spent on improving the defenses of Inarime and Pholothras. Gunnhild began preparing to cast Reanimation in Jotunheim. These undead would join Kingfc22 in Pholothras once he arrived there, and from there they would eventually assault Mictlan. |

Re: AAR: Time of the Ice Giants

Turn 10
Winter, Year 1
Rhyvinter saw that the enemy fortress was guarded by a very small army. His commanders begged him to attack, to wipe the Mictlan capitol from the face of the world. They Mictlans had moved the bulk of their forces northwest and had attacked the independents in Ligrea, conquering that province. Rhyvinter was quite temped to press the attack, but decided to wait. “We shall continue to build up our forces here. We will build a magic lab here, and a fortress while building up our armies. We will do our best to hide this from them, and not make the suspicious. Then, when we are ready, we will strike and crush them while the bulk of their forces are far from their fortress. The commanders considered this, and saw the wisdom of Rhyvinter’s words. Thus they began preparations for hiding their true strength from the Mictlans. Treasury: 391 Income: 432 (+13) Provinces: 13 Gunnhild the hag cast Reanimation in Jotunheim. These undead forces would be dispatched to the Mictlan front as soon as possible. Event: The winter in Pholothras was mild, allowing trades ease of travel and more livestock than usual to survive. This increased the tax collection by 50 gold and decreased unrest in the province. The locals were convinced that the mild winter was a gift from Rhyvinter, and his presence was viewed with favor. This made Visbur’s preaching more effective, increasing the dominion in the province to 4. Scouts in the province of Dust Hills witnessed the forces of Pangaea conquer the province. The forces were led by Peisandros, the Centaur Cataphract prophet. The scout was impressed by his power, and left in awe of him. The satyrs and War Minotaurs used their speed to outflank the infantry, cutting them down by the dozens. A force of an unobserved nation attacked the province in the Old Man Mountains. They were human, armed with iron weapons. Some of the forces appeared to be slave-warriors. They conqured the province with a minimum of losses. However, Rexor and his barbarian troops could not tell the conquerors from the conquered, and quickly dispatched the majority of these troops and claimed this province for Jotun. Only by examining the dead was it surmised that these soldiers were from the nation of Pythium. How Pythium would respond to this attack was unknown. Scouts in Illidar watched as Boneater, the prophet of Ermor, lead a huge force of Spectral Forces against the province. The scout recounted the attack, decribing a scene out of a nightmare, where the troops fought ghosts with weapons that were barely effective. The province was conquered. A new Herse was recruited in Jotunheim, known as Coffee Warlord. This young Herse was famous for his quick temper as well as his technical prowess. He would head to the front and command an army for the assault on Mictlan. A scout was also recruited in Jotunheim. He immediately set out the northwest provinces. Kingfc22 began constructing a magic lab in Pholothras. When completed, they would be able to recruit Sages, who would help greatly with research and also as combat mages for the assault on Mictlan. Rhyvinter began to search Pholothras for magic sites. Visbur continued to preach, spreading dominion throughout the provinces, and hoping to steal some believers from the Mictlan faithful. This would make Rhyvinter much more powerful, and Nobb less so. The rituals continued night and day in the temples of Pholothras. Farbaute set out for Inarime, where he would recruit forces for the assault on Mictlan. Spies in the land of man spotted their ruler and pretender god, Bethred the Vampire Queen. He also found that their fortress was lightly guarded and noted the defense strength. He then moved further east. Horvan the Jotun Scout found the capitol of Pangaea. He set out to infiltrate the province and gather information on the forces there. Fjollvitner the scout also discovered the capitol of Ermor, and also made to infiltrate this province. Rexor and his barbarians marched to the province of Lithia, to hopefully conquer it before the forces of Pythium could. Godzilla Blitz and his forces were ordered to attack the independent province of Bithyne, defended by a modest force of Hoburgs. In Inarime, a force of 8 archers was recruited. In Temiglia, a priest was recruited. In Jotunheim, a Herse was recruited. [ July 27, 2004, 15:42: Message edited by: sachmo ] |

Re: AAR: Time of the Ice Giants
I probably should have made a note earlier about my scale...
For independant troops, each figure represents 10 soldiers. So, when I recruited 80, it was really only 8 figures. I'm still trying to figure out the scale. Each giant figure represents 2 figures, but I haven't been consistant with that in my turn recount. I'll probably just use actual units recruited in the writeups, but change the scale for battles. Sorry for the confusion!! |

There was another Jotun AAR I was reading where the author said he commissioned a temple, recruited a Gygja, recruited 3 or so spearmen, and raised PD, all with a treasury of only about 400 gp, so I'm just trying to figure out what I have been missing. Your "scale" makes much more sense, thanks. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif |
Re: AAR: Time of the Ice Giants

Turn 11
Late Winter, Year 1
Godzilla Blitz and his host met the little folk of Hoburg outside of a village on the outskirts of Bithyne. Some of the giants laughed when the saw the wee folk dressed in armor and wielding tiny weapons, but Godzilla Blitz was wiser than that. “See the commanders, you fools? They have weapons of power! Do not take these foes lightly!” Most of the giants with him were humbled. They could see the magical glint from the pike held by one of the Hoburg Champions leading the enemy forces. That pike would cut through a giant quickly. The time for mirth was over, and the giants formed a battle line, growling and shouting war chants as they prepared to take on the Hoburg forces. But the Hoburg’s proved to be just as fierce. The Burgmeister Guard charged, shouting high-pitched warcries in their own language, but the intent was clear. They would fight these giants to the death, and were not to be counted on to flee from battle. They swarmed one of the Hirdmen, raining blows upon him with their small maces. The Hirdman chopped the Hoburg soldiers to pieces, but they were many. Finally his shield was smashed, and as he went to throw it away, the Hoburg Champion appeared with his magic pike and slashed at the Hirdman, taking his arm at the shoulder. The wounded Hirdman fell, but before he could be overwhelmed, the rest of the giants broke through the ring of tiny men and rescued their fallen comrade. The battle quickly turned against the Hoburgs, as they soon found themselves surrounded by giants, and were slaughtered. Finally, all that stood were the Hoburg Champions and a few crossbowmen. Godzilla Blitz stepped into the ring and offered to accept the surrender of the little men. “You have fought bravely, but you will surely die if you continue to resist. Surrender now, or die.” The Hoburg Champion with the magic pike spit at Godzilla Blitz and swung his weapon at his head. The Jarl avoided this blow and swung his own sword at the Champion. He used his pike to parry the blow, but the force of the Godzilla Blitz’s blow sheared the magic weapon in half and carried on into the chest of the Hoburg. He fell instantly, his lifeless eyes staring into the sky. Godzilla Blitz lowered his sword and pointed it at the remaining Hoburgs. “No more chances! Drop your weapons or die!” A few of the crossbowmen dropped their weapons, but the remaining commander and his men would have none of it. They charged Godzilla Blitz, screaming their war cries and unleashing a Last, desperate missile attack against him. The giants moved to protect their commander, and took down the remaining Hoburgs, leaving the Champion to face the Jarl. The Hoburg commander fought with fury, but the giant was much too powerful for him. In moments, Godzilla Blitz ran him through. As he looked down at the lifeless body, he noticed that the commander was wearing a ring that seemed to radiate power. This ring Godzilla Blitz took for himself, and the magic writing on it told him that it was a Ring of Tamed Lightning, which would give him almost total protection against shock attacks. As he put it on his finger, he smiled. The spoils of war were indeed sweet this season. Treasury: 431 Income: 519 (+87) Provinces: 15 (+2) Rhyvinter found no magic sites in Pholothras. Brigands have taken up residence in the Farseer Mountains. This increased the unrest in the province to 33. Coffee Warlord was dispatched from Pholothras to deal with the scum. The tax rate in this province was also reduced to zero, to help combat the unrest. Rexor and his barbarians took the province of Lithia. They were faced with a force of mixed infantry, at least two hundred strong. The barbarians won the day, losing twenty (two) of their own number. The province was claimed for Jotunheim. Once the battle was over, Rexor was released from his contract, free to seek employment elsewhere. Horvan the scout was caught in Pangaea, and killed as a spy by their forces. Rhyvinter went north into the province of Inarime to search for magic sites. Kaspar the spy headed west from Inarime to scout the lay of Mictlan lands. Gunnhild the hag began forging a Skull Talisman for use by one of the commanders in the upcoming battles. Kingfc22 was ordered to assist in researching. A Sage was recruited in Pholothras. Visbur began construction a Fort in Pholothras. Fjollvitner the scout discovered that the pretender of Ermor was a powerful lich. Havok the Jotun Herse joined the cause in Jotunheim. He was ordered to join Coffee Warlord in the bandit hunt in the Farseer Mountains. A spearman was recruited in Jotunheim. [ July 30, 2004, 05:10: Message edited by: sachmo ] |

Turn 12
Early Spring, Year 2
Havok and Coffee Warlord destroyed all of the brigands in the Farseer Mountains. These bandits were the remains of the forces defeated in the neighboring independent provinces. They had hoped to wage a guerilla war against Jotunheim, but were unprepared for the strength of the belief of the population in Rhyvinter’s cause. In the end, their agitation of the citizens was but a flea bite to the cause of the giants… Treasury: 358 Income: 463 (-56) Provinces: 15 This was a pretty uneventful month. Rhyvinter arrived in Inarime. He began to search for magic sites. He was again very tempted to assault the Mictlan capitol, but not until the frontier was strengthened and the fortress was finished in Pholothras. In Phholothras, a sage was recruited. His specialty was Air Magic. He immediately began researching in the Lab, allowing Kingfc22 to search for magic sites in the province which Rhyvinter had been unable to uncover. Coffee Warlord and Havok marched on the independent province of Kratas, which was defended by a medium sized force of Barbarians. Vitiges the Priest marched from Ard with a force of 3 light infantry to lend his holy spells to their fight. The defense in Old Man Mountains and Halemyer was raised to 11. The defense in Lithia and the Forest of Gun was raised to 10. Two light infantry and two archers were raised in Inarime. If Kratas were taken, it would be the Last independent province ripe for conquest. Soon, war with one of the major nations would begin. |

Turn 13
Spring, Year 2 With the new season came hot blood. With the winter frost fully shaken off, the forces of Man decided that they needed to expand their borders, and so declared war on the nation of Jotun... Treasury: 484 Income: 590 Provinces: 15 Gems: 1 Fire, 11 Water, 13 Astral, 6 Death, 26 Nature Man declared war on Jotun. Kingfc22’s search for magic sites was fruitless in Pholothras. In Inarime, Rhyvinter found 2 magic sites: Well of White Water- 1 Water gem per turn Gem Deposits- 40 gold per turn In Halemyre, the citizens have volunteered for the local defense, increasing the province defense to 10. In the province of Kratas, the forces led by Coffee Warlord and Havok met a huge band of barbarians. The young commanders showed inexperience, however, and Havok was cut down by the numerous enemies. The rest of the giant forces fled the field, and the province remained in enemy hands. In Bithyne, Godzilla Blitz prepared to go on the offensive against the forces of man. He quickly organized the citizens of the province into a fairly effective defense force, and took his army into Ireme, a province held by man. The province was thought to be lightly defended by militia, and so would hopefully be an easy target for his forces. Rhyvinter immediately abandoned plans to attack Mictlan, and took his army back to Jotunheim for reinforcements. Kingfc22 and Visbur also moved back to the capitol, and would join the offensive against Man. A Sage was recruited in Pholothras. A Herse was recruited in Jotunheim. Two Jotun Spearmen and a Jotun Hurler were recruited in Jotunheim. A priest and three light infantry were recruited in Temiglia. |

Re: AAR: Time of the Ice Giants
Turn 14
Late Spring, Year 2 Not to be outdone for trechery, the heathens of Mictlan declared war on Jotunheim in the next season. However, Rhyvinter was fully devoted to crushing Man first, and so strengthened his defenses in the west, while marching his armies into the east. Mictlan declared war on Jotunheim. In the Forest of Gun, blizzards devastated the land, killing 5% of the population. Commoners whisper that it was called down upon them by Rhyvinter himself, to punish them for their lack of production. In the province of Inarime, Godzilla Blitz led his troops against the forces of Man. Their forces consisted of less than one hundred mixed slingers and militia and four huge Horned Serpents. They were commanded by two Castellans, heavily armed and armored noblemen. Upon spying the giants approaching their lines, the human commanders unleashed their forces. The militia met with the giant spearmen first, quickly followed by the Horned Serpents, even as rocks pelted the giants from the slingers positions. The giants met the attack, reaching further than the humans could with their large spears and axes. The charge was quickly turned, and the humans died to a man, as did the serpents. As was their custom, the giants then bellowed warcries and charged the remaining forces, cutting down anyone in their path. All of the slingers were slain, as was Berthwald the Castellan, while some twenty militia and the remaining human commander were able to flee. The province belonged to the Jotun, but more importantly, they were but a single province from the enemy capitol. A few days later, the humans launched a counter-attack in Temiglia. The human force consisted of seventy axemen, twenty spearmen, and forty longbowmen. This force was led by two monks. Opposing them were twenty militia, and a priest. Thankfully, the local militia was able to join this force before the battle, adding twenty giant militia to the Jotun forces along with a Herse to lead them. The humans moved toward the town in a battle line, covered by the swift arrows from their longbowmen. The giants and milita hid behind their shields, but a few of the arrows got through, killing about five men and wounding a few of the giants. The giant militia watched in disgust as their human counterparts broke and ran as the Axemen and spearmen came closer, but it helped to strengthen their resolve. The din of war rose over the field as the two forces clashed. The giant line bent as the humans crashed into them, attacking with great ferocity. These men were experienced soldiers, and their skill was apparent. The priest for Jotun, Albert, took an arrow in the chest, and the wound was great. He continued to fight with the Jotun militia, trying to heal who he could even as the battle swirled around him. Where a giant fell, he moved to try to offer them comfort. Finally, the Men broke and began to run. Sensing victory, the giants gave chase, cutting stragglers down as they found them. Albert moved along with them, but eventually his wound proved too much for him to overcome, and he fell dead on the field. Seeing their brave companion fall enraged the giant militia, and they completed the slaughter. Of the forces of Man who entered Temiglia, not a single on mad the trip back to their lines. Danpner, a Jotun Herse, left for the Mictlan frontier. There he was tasked to hold the line until the war could be won in the east against Man. Kingfc22, Rhyvinter, and Visbur moved into Temiglia to prepare an assault on Man. In Ireme, Godzilla Blitz prepared the defense of the province. He was expecting some sort of counter-attack from Man, and would need all of the help he could get. In Pholothras, a Gode was recruited to lead the defense force, or a counter-attack force to take advantage of any weakness shown by Mictlan. A human commander was recruited in Halemyre. Two (20) light infantry were recruited in Worshin. Five light infantry and a militia were recruited in Inarime. Coffee Warlord and the priest Vitiges were ordered to invade the Man province of Lettia, which scouts reported as unmanned. To back up this claim, the scout Fomiraghist also pledged to join the attack, lending his quite limited battle strength to the cause. |
Re: AAR: Time of the Ice Giants
Turn 15
Early Summer, Year 2 Pholothras was under siege. Warriors from Mictlan appeared suddenly from the mountains. Quickly the local militia was roused, and they took defensive positions along the road into the city proper. Arrayed against the giants was a force of almost 200 warriors and slaves, and they were led by a powerful priest. The giants were confident that they would be able to defeat these warriors, though, especially with the advantage of defensive works. Their confidence began to fade when they heard the screams of three huge demons that were traveling with the Mictlan forces… In Pholothras, Emug the sage cast Awaken Vine Men. The forces of Mictlan laid seige to the fortress there after routing the local defense troops. Unable to recruit troops, the commanders trapped inside began to devise a strategy for survival. In Pholothras, plans were made to break the siege. Meligol the sage began work forging an enchanted sword for use in combat, and Emug began to summon more Vine Men. The Scout Than was injured when a sniper put an arrow in his chest, causing him to bear a horrible wound for the rest of his days. Jord the Vaetti Hag summoned a Mound King to serve the armies of Jotunheim. In Lettia, Coffee Warlord and his troop ran into tougher then expected resistance from the local militia. The province was taken, but the priest and scout accompanying him were slain. Danfozar the scout was found spying on the capitol of man and was slain. Rhyvinter, Kingfc22, and Visbur moved to attack the Man province of Ermithia. Godzilla Blitz continued to hold position in Ireme, preaching the word and pacifying the population. Coffee Warlord recruited fourty (4) tribal warriors to join the cause. He also planned on raising the province defense, but only if there was money enough. It was discovered that in the south, the forces of Ermor has pushed into a province bordering Jotun lands. The defense was immediately raised in these provinces, to attempt to discourage the undead hordes from attacking immediately. In Jotunheim, a Herse, two Spearmen, and a Hurler unit were raised. These troops would join the Mound King in trying to break the siege at Pholothras. Rhyvinter sent an offer to the mercenary company The Farstrikers to join the Jotun cause in Worshin. The 160 gold was a steep price to pay, but the additional forces would be a great help in turning the war against Mictlan. |
Re: AAR: Time of the Ice Giants
Turn 16
Summer, Year 2 Theon walked out of his tent and stared to the northeast. The fortress at Pholothras would not stand much longer. The siege had to be lifted soon, or the entire province would fall. Rhyvinter was counting on him. Damn, he thought, kicking a small pebble across the dusty ground. He turned around and sized up his forces. Fifty men, light infantry, were all that he had been able to recruit before word came that he was to move into Pholothras and life the siege. Fifty men, plus whatever the commanders inside the fortress had been able to scrape together. He took a deep breath and ran his hands through his hair. I can’t do this, he thought. We’re just not strong enough. “A rider approaches!” cried the watchman. “From the east!” Theon turned and looked down the road. At the crest of a hill, he could make out the shape of a man on horseback. Quickly he turned to his steward. “My sword! Quickly!” he shouted, squinting to try and make out who the rider was. Coming from the east, he should be friendly, but one could never be too careful. His steward was at his side in moments with his sword. He buckled it on as he ran to the edge of came, dodging a group of men who were milling about, trying to see what the commotion was. “He bares the holy banner!” the watchman shouted. Theon slowed down to a fast walk, and stopped suddenly. Behind the hill, he could see a huge cloud of dust being kicked up. That could only mean a large force, and it was headed this way. The fact that he had not been told of any reinforcements dispatched to his command made him fear the worst. “Camp! To arms!” he shouted. “Set hasty defense to the east!” The camp became a swirl of activity. Men grabbed their spears and armor, running to the edge of camp to form a wall of steel with which to meet whatever it was coming over the hill. The rider was still coming straight for the camp at a gallop. Theon stood with his hand on his sword, watching his men deploy with one eye, and the rider with the other. In no time, his men were set. Two ranks of spears were set, ready to repel any attacker. The rider was close enough to make out, now. He was in full armor and shield, with a lance and a silver-tipped spear. He looked quite formidable. At the moment, the first of the unseen force crested the hill. It was a man, armed only with a bow almost as tall as himself and a full quiver of arrows. With him were ten more archers, all armed with the same huge bow. Suddenly, more archers came over the hill, marching in two identical columns. The rider was just coming to the edge of the came when he reined in his huge charger. “Who is Theon?” he shouted to the men before him. He lifted his lance higher into the air, so that none could mistake the flag that flew from it. He was a friend, or at least not an enemy. Theon stepped forward. “I am Theon, commander of this troop. Who are you, sir?” The knight nodded and stepped down from his horse. As Theon watched, he removed his mail gauntlet. Behind him, archers continued to stream over the hilltop. There were hundreds of them. The knight came toward him with his hand outstretched. Theon moved to meet him. They shook hands. “I am Arnaud, captain and leader of the Farstrikers!” the knight exclaimed. “Your ruler has seen fit to hire us on to help relieve the fortress at Pholothras.” For the first time in quite a while, Theon smiled. Treasury: 549 Income: 712 Provinces: 19 Gems: 1 Fire, 20 Water (+3), 11 Astral (+1) , 4 Death (+2), 30 Nature (+2) Farbaute was wounded in a minor skirmish with Mictlan raiders. A stray arrow found it’s way deep into his chest, and though he would live, it was a wound that would bother him for the rest of his days. Emug summoned more Vine Men in Pholothras, bolstering the defense of the province. The Mictlan siege forces continued to pound away at the walls of the fortress, threatening to breach them. In Jotunheim, Jord summoned a host of longdead. They would join Nar the Mound King as he rode to help out in Pholothras. Man sent a raiding force of Black Hawks into the Forest of Gila, but the local defense and a few militia withstood the attack. Twenty men were lost, but the attackers were driven off. New mineral deposits were discovered in Jotunheim, increasing resources by 10. Rhyvinter and his army rolled over the defenders in Ermithia, losing only a few undead troops in the process. There was now only one province between Rhyvinter and the capitol of Man. Fjollvinter, the Jotun scout, single-handedly took on the defense forces in Man’s province of Sleepy Mountains. His fierce rage and utter disregard for his own safety routed the defenders, who fled the battlefield after he slew twenty of their number. His name would be sung in the halls of Jotunheim for years for his exploits. Arnaud and Theon marched for Pholothras, while Messages were sent ahead to the fortress defenders to attempt to break the siege when they arrived. Rhyvinter and his force moved on Fenica, reportedly defended by a small force of spearmen. Nar the Mound King and Algot the Jotun Herse moved into Worshin to act as a reserve for the assault on Pholothras. BUILDS: The defense in Sleepy Mountains was raised to 11. Two Heavy Infantry were recruited. Godzilla Blitz began constructing a temple in Ireme. Coffee Warlord recruited more Tribal Warriors in Lettia. Farbaute recruited more light infantry in Inarime. In Jotunheim, a Vaetti Hag and 5 Jotun Spearmen were recruited. |
