Lol, whats with "no Norfleet" rule?

Zapmeister July 6th, 2004 01:56 AM

Re: MP Game - Faerun Folly

Some time ago I had a major falling-out with Norfleet around the issue of ethical behaviour. As a result, I asked him not to join any games I organize. The comment is simply to advise players that they can expect Norfleet not to be in the game.

Re: MP Game - Faerun Folly

well, I've had my fill of games w/ Norfleet myself, for the time being at least, so I can't say I'm opposed to the house rule. If someone refuses to play a game w/out Norfleet, they don't have to join http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Since Faerun isn't carried on the Illwinter site, what's the location people should download the map from?

( I have it myself - but want to ensure I've got the current Version; I'm guessing it's on Arryn's site or some such, but it might help other people to know. )

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Sure. Simply upload your pretender.

Don't forget to identify yourself in the game's page on the mosehansen server, though, as I'll be kicking players that are still anonymous when we start.

I got Marignon ^^

I greet my future neighbours, Pythium, Vanheim, Abysya, and Atlantis ^^
IIRC the map has fixed started locations, and we're very near (from 2 to 4 provinces away iirc).

Re: MP Game - Faerun Folly

I'd just like to point out that this is not a game that anyone should join casually. Faerun has 424! provinces, so this will be a very long game, with a very large call on a player's time.

I've been looking for a new game myself, but I don't have a high enough tolerance for pain to play on Faerun http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Re: MP Game - Faerun Folly

It is the Trupinator 8600. His tolerance for pain is unmatched by pathetic humans!

Mardagg July 6th, 2004 06:00 PM

Re: MP Game - Faerun Folly

Never played Faerun myself and after looking at it and the number of provinces,I have to say:
I am out.
Like Truper said,it takes too much time and especially with Quickhost on ,I wont be able to participate until the end.

Ulm is therefore open again.

Re: MP Game - Faerun Folly

what are the victory conditions on this monster? if it has a reasonable end-point, i'd be interested as the map itself seems very nice. OTOH, I seriously worry for the health of Mose's server - 424 provinces w/ 17 nations will start giving his poor celly a brain haemorrhage by the end.

provisionally, I uploaded Caelum, which I have never played before but all the other new nations that interest me have been taken. now, however, I'm feeling somewhat trepidatious.

The size of the map and number of players seem to have little or no bearing on the resources consumed. Strange but true http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Re: MP Game - Faerun Folly

Is Ulm still vacated (since Mardag left?) or is the Anonymous player holding the spot someone who already replaced him?

What's the hosting interval going to be?

No special victory conditions? Seems like a good map to fill with victory locations to focus the action a bit.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Yeh, I was thinking about getting in myself - but 424 provinces on a 24 hour routine is a bit much, given that by mid-game turns might be taking two hours, every. (At least for the successful nations http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif )

Two hours every two or three days, sure - the game might start off slow, but before long many people would be happy for the slow pace.

Re: MP Game - Faerun Folly

This game will stress the tolerance for pain that anyone but me has beyond all reasonable limits.

Please note that even my favorite map, the World, has a mere 339 provinces. Faerun is a good deal larger. Plus that since Zapmeister doesn't want me in the game, not that I'd want to play listening to his endless whining anyway, somebody ELSE is going to be feeling this pain. Look over the player list: For every player you recognize, and think you can take, the pain you're going to suffer is going to grow.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">I'll probably take a vote on extending the timelimit once we get into the middlegame.

We currently have the required 15 registrations, but 2 are anonymous. We need 2 more identified players (or have the anonymous ones identify themselves) before we can start.

Note that it's OK to gazump an anonymous position, but not an identified one. Compare the MD5 value to the one you had when you joined to see if you've been gazumped.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">I thought that Esben had changed things so that you couldn't overwrite someone else's pretender, because his server restores the original one. You have to kick anonymous players in order for someone to overwrite / update a nation's pretender, or to allow someone to take those positions that the people have decided not to play.

Edit: Just verified this by uploading a new Ulm, since that player bowed out. The md5 doesn't change, because the server is keeping the original pretender.

Whats the status of this game? With Acro and Caelum out, and Vanheim on the rocks so to speak, do we continue or shall we do over?

Zapmeister July 11th, 2004 11:39 PM

Re: MP Game - Faerun Folly

Arco and Caelum are out? Then they should be moved to AI. If the players don't have the courtesy to do it themselves, then I may be able to (but I'm not sure that remotely using the master password works yet).

Can someone confirm that Arco and Caelum are not coming back? What's the status of Vanheim?

Soapyfrog July 12th, 2004 01:29 AM

Re: MP Game - Faerun Folly

See this thread for vanheim's situation (I don't know why he didnt simply post here):

http://www.shrapnelgames.com/cgi-bin...;f=74;t=003238

Huzaurdaddi might be able to give some more info about Caelum as well.

Zapmeister July 12th, 2004 01:55 AM

Re: MP Game - Faerun Folly

OK, I see. I absolutely don't want to restart, as I've been in this position before and I've found that restarting is the first step towards losing the game altogether.

So now I'm off to see if I can set Arco and Caelum to AI with the master password.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">I totally understand. Well I'll give it a shot for a while. My pretender did cost me 496 points though. So he's kind of important.

I don't know how far I'll get without him. He was kind of central. I'm sure that if I had taken the allfather it would be cool to start on an island like this ( although you can't get your master smiths off the island either which is quite a pain -- and they are capital only. ).

If I play another game on this map, I won't take vanehiem, even though the setup is not without it's perks.

Zapmeister July 12th, 2004 08:55 AM

Re: MP Game - Faerun Folly

I just knew it couldn't be that easy http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

I used the master password to set Arco to AI.
The turn ran, and I downloaded my own (R'lyeh) position, and guess what.

CD Key Violation. Your CD key is in use by another installation. The game thinks that Arco and R'lyeh are being played from the same CD.

If this doesn't correct itself next turn (when Arco is established as an AI) then I'm out of the game.

Sigh.

That bug should be reported to Illwinter ASAP. Maybe it can be included for the next patch.

Re: MP Game - Faerun Folly

I think if it happens that two 2h files are uploaded from different IPs using the same CDkey, it will barf. Do you have a dynamic IP which changed, or move to a different computer between uploading a botted R'lyeh and pulling your Arco .trn?

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">No, it was all done from the same computer in the same session.

Kristoffer O July 12th, 2004 12:01 PM

Re: MP Game - Faerun Folly

That shouldn't happen. Violation should only happen if the same key is used on two different machines (or different installs on the same machine, linux and windows for example). The AI itself don't use the keys.

Do you still have the files?

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Which files? The server is mosehansen's (game is Faerun Folly). I still have my .trn file in which the CD key violation is declared, but the .2h file contains my orders for the next turn.

EDIT: Note that Arco wasn't AI for this turn. This was the turn in which I clicked the "Become AI" button.

EDIT: I've just had a thought. I am in the habit of disconnecting if I'm not going to use the net for a while. I can't be sure I didn't disconnect between "playing" Arco and playing my own turn, possibly getting a different IP.

Re: MP Game - Faerun Folly

I think I've encountered something similar to this. In MP one of the players lost his internet connection and gave me his password to set him AI. I played my nation's turn and set him computer. At the hosting time, our host told it had någoted until he had deleted the AIed nation's file. And I'm sure this was done with same IP.

So any chance there'd be a problem when setting a nation to computer play?

It looks as though some folks may be struggling to meet the 24-hour deadline, so if at least 3 people post that they want it, I'll move it to 48-hour quickhost.

I'd prefer 24H QH, however it doesn't matter much.
My Marignon will be soon crushed by the combined forces of Ermor and Pangea CW ...
They stripped from my hand the Pythium capitol earning so on a very good gem income.

I've just restarted the game, because it had started to hang on the "Waiting for game info" box. Restarting seems to have cleared the problem, but Ermor (Catquiet) and Pangaea (djtool) will have to upload their orders again (restarting clears any orders received for the current turn).

Zapmeister August 20th, 2004 08:15 PM

Re: MP Game - Faerun Folly

The game has been restarted with a new turnaround of 48 hours with quickhost. All orders for the current turn uploaded before the restart will have been lost, so please check your turn.
