Cool - another slow game? I'm generating a pretender for Caelum. Time to give "Death from Above" a try.

What's going on Cainehill? You have time to create a whole new race of Caelians while your Jotuns in hard_slog have been the only unordered nation for hours and hours today?

edit: you promptly put your turn in, I retract any criticism.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Yep, just got home after a long hard day - since the game creator implied that first claims on Mosehansen held, I wanted to get in there. Then proceeded all my outstanding game turns.

Edit : And since the first thing I did on getting home was check mosehansen, but saw 780 minutes remaining on the first due ( hard slog ) I felt justified in creating the pretender - didn't think I'd be holding anything up.

This would be my first mp game, but I've played a lot of singleplayer.

Since it looks like it'll be another day or two (at least) before there's enough players, I'm going to want to replace my pretender (Caelum). Found a serious flaw with it, so....

I'm going to set Caelum to Anonymous, if you could kick anonymous again please.

Thanks.

Re: MP Game: Ye Olde Dom2 Game

You don't need to be kicked to upload your pretender. The new Md5sum system replaced the old "protection" system....and at Last report, the kicking thing was a bit unreliable anyway.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Kicking is sometimes unreliable, but you could only overwrite the pretender when the game's name used characters that made Dom2 and Esben's server not work with each other. (And I think the kicking not working was also because Dom2 used a different file name from what Esben was using for one nation.)

As is - the md5 is mostly useful as a way of double checking that your new pretender upload didn't take, because the md5 doesn't change.

As I just verified after trying to re-upload. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

It does need anonymous kicked still, and I've a new Caelum pretender ready to go when I see it's been kicked.

Thanks Schmork - I've got my updated, new and more expensive yet more shoddily made, improved pretender in. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

How many players are you aiming for?

Schmork August 4th, 2004 12:48 AM

Re: MP Game: Ye Olde Dom2 Game

we have 10 right now, and this is a good number for karan, so unless more people join i probably start game tomorrow sometime.

The Panther August 4th, 2004 02:09 AM

Re: MP Game: Ye Olde Dom2 Game

In my (newbish) opinion, Karan is a good choice with 9 land and 1 water players, which is where it stands right now. Though there seems to still be one player who has yet to upload his pretender.

I note that I am not the only newbie player in the game, a fact for which I am eternally grateful. This way, I hope to Last long enough to enjoy the experience!

Re: MP Game: Ye Olde Dom2 Game

Oh, dearie me. Erm, hate to screw this game up for everyone involved, but I think it might be best if we restarted, seeing as we are on turn 1, short a few players, and so on.
It seems my pretender upload didn't quite take, and I'm stick with the "filler" pretender I used to claim the slot, so it wouldn't be taken in the 10-15 minutes I spent creating a more suitable pretender. I could always stick with it but, seeing as it's a Naga chassis without scales or additional magic or dominion, I suppose it'd throw game balance outta whack.
Really unspeakably sorry about this.

Update: Just preempting the irony here, next time I'll be sure to check md5sums before changing pretenders, not just after.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Bah! I take it you haven't caught the Posts (in this thread even) about how you _can't_ overwrite the bloody pretenders? Esben implemented that to keep people from stealing slots.

You _HAVE_ to go anonymous and ask the game creator to kick anonymous players, just like I did.

Vicious Love August 5th, 2004 05:40 PM

Ergh. I read every bit of that post except the very Last line,

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Which really seems to contradict all of the remainder of that post and the one that preceded it, doesn't it?
Only at first glance, of course. That'll teach me to skim.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">I believe you have to kill (stop) the game entirely, and immediately create a new game while the slot is open.

Then everyone has to upload their pretenders again. Then, in about a week, we'll find out that someone didn't set a password. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Re: MP Game: Ye Olde Dom2 Game

Restarting games take a very long time. One game in particular that I am in has taken over 2 weeks just to get going after a restart. And it is very hard to get everybody to get their pretenders uploaded again. Plus people will want to drop and new people will want in, thus starting the process anew. And, as Canehill just mentioned, someone will have forgotten a password and want yet another restart.

I do understand that Vicious Love uploaded the wrong pretender. But hey, what is the worst thing that can happen to him? Why, he loses and then simply enters another new game. Big deal!

I will probably be gone before him anyway because I do not know how to play this game very well.

Once a game finally gets going, it seems best to just keep it going. My vote is to fight on!

So, on to turn two for me!

Cainehill August 6th, 2004 12:24 AM

Re: MP Game: Ye Olde Dom2 Game

I have to agree with Panther - I'd prefer to keep the game going.

In the future, Vicious Love might consider throwing together -some- fully loaded pretender into a slot to reserve it. Takes what - 5 minutes or less to tap the scales, add some magic paths, and have something in place.

And also, to check the md5 value to verify that he hadn't gotten updated; I mean, that's one reason the thing is there, not so people can just say, "Wow, what a long hex value!". Worst case, a person can make a minor change to their pretender and attempt uploading again, to see if the md5 value changes.

When it _doesn't_ they should be able to figure out that their first update didn't go through either.

Re: MP Game: Ye Olde Dom2 Game

It could be worse. At least it's not a no-magic crone with bad scales. At least now everyone knows your pretender is a dud, so you ought to die quickly. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Works fer me.

Update: Even turns out I have Water 9 on that thing. Still no scales, castle, or dominion, but it's better than nothing.

Hey, Regen! Yeah, you with the gutter mouth. It's pretty uncouth to respond to in-character, role-played Messages in the game with profanity. Personally, I'm more amused by your lack of creativity in using four letter words than I am the words themselves, but it's still rather rude and uncouth, and other players might be more offended than someone like me.
